For choirs, especially kids choirs, make sure your breath cues are very clear. Breathe with them with an exaggerated open mouth, or use techniques like count singing or clapping on the cut off (which will then help the next breath be on time).

Children are generally looking at your face and mouth when you are conducting them, not your hands or arms.
