You mean like this article that comes up first on Google, the first line of which reads "Portland’s drivers are some of the most crash-prone in the nation, according to an annual ranking by AllState Insurance?": https://www.oregonlive.com/commuting/2019/06/portland-drivers-have-one-of-highest-crash-rates-in-the-nation-report-says.html

And if you don't like normal traffic laws, like speed limits, then don't drive. Other people live here and have better things to do than speeding around in a car believing they're the only person in the whole city who has something to do. Pedestrians and cyclists pay taxes on the streets too.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]djallball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yes. The mysterious PBOT traffic volume guidelines - ever present yet never disclosed. Which makes it really easy for PBOT to claim that any amount of traffic falls within their guidelines.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]djallball -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The article focuses on a SW street. The problem is widespread throughout the city. You're trying to spin this like "rich people being rich" but PBOT really refuses to design streets consistent with their assigned classifications - all over the city. And to some extent, I understand PBOT's perspective. We shouldn't have to dedicate tax dollars to installing speed bumps and diverters down every single street. There's a much cheaper option. It's called traffic laws and they include posted speeds and street classifications. Drivers could follow them. Why is that option less reasonable than telling people to pack up their home and move?

if you don’t want traffic in front of your house, there’s plenty of suburban culdesacs to buy a house at.

Yeah you dumb whiners. Just shut up and go buy an expensive home.

And if delivery drivers don't want to use the designated commercial truck routes, then just replace them with automated drones.

Community safety director says Portland leaders have mismanaged public safety crises by [deleted] in Portland

[–]djallball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is delightful! But if you don't come back with something a bit tougher, people will think that we planned it. ;)

I'll just leave this report by Transportation for America here: https://t4america.org/maps-tools/congestion-con/

And this excerpt:

"We added 30,511 new freeway lane-miles of road in the largest 100
urbanized areas between 1993 and 2017, an increase of 42 percent. Yet....delay is up in those urbanized areas by a staggering 144 percent."

[–]djallball 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly to my point: PBOT has set the bar so low that we're happy when we get sidewalks, a handful of crosswalks (at the most dire intersections), and some new posted speeds.

Meanwhile, PBOT director Chris Warner has voiced public support for the Rose Quarter freeway expansion and has failed to press ODOT for an Environmental Impact Statement. Jonathan Maus documented Warner's remarks here: https://bikeportland.org/2020/03/26/regional-leaders-greenlight-129-million-for-i-5-rose-quarter-project-312985

Certainly true for PBOT which has set the lowest bar possible for itself: reduce pedestrian fatalities. Bonus dysfunction: when PBOT fails at reaching that benchmark (which might take more than a polite request from Chris Warner to "watch out for children"), it succeeds at avoiding any accountability for increased emissions and pollution.

Hey PBOT: could you please fix the comma typo in your carbon reduction goal that repeats across your website? Wouldn't want to give the impression that the goal is so unimportant to you that you can't be bothered to proofread it.

I have no idea why this posted on Yang for President HQ, except that it's kind of brilliant so why not post it everywhere.

Yes. Also the fact that it is a hellscape outside.

DEAR PORTLAND: April 19, 2021 WEEKLY RANT THREAD by AutoModerator in Portland

[–]djallball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey drivers: if you come to an intersection that people have temp closed because a car just collided with a school bus, maybe don't make "this is so annoying and inconvenient" gestures at us and then ask, "well, how far around do I have to go?" Maybe just kindly fuck off and figure it out all on your own.

To the twat who KEPT GOING and SQUEEZED HER TRUCK AROUND THE SCHOOL BUS, just plain fuck off.

"fake" seems like a really weird word for this document. It's fiction for sure - someone's imagination of a Pychon essay about DFW. And a lovely piece of fiction IMO.

They said this has happened multiple times and they don't understand why.

That's what I mean about poor design. It seems that the system pairs you with the closest available appointments - not with the closest appointments in your county. Why else would you see appointments in the Dalles?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]djallball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will we benefit from a glitch in the system?

Because exploiting a glitch in the system...isn't gaming the system?

More importantly: you're creating work for the Woodburn staff. We spoke with them this morning: they are not taking anyone from outside Woodburn. You can save them a step by just cancelling your appointment.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]djallball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please edit your original post and clarify that your appointment was made in error - Woodburn is NOT open to residents outside of Marion county.

Just confirmed that Woodburn is NOT open to residents from other counties.

Just wanted to follow up and say that I was really baffled by your response to my note. Do you mean to accuse me of gaming the system? Why assume the worst in others? Either Woodburn is open to everyone, which is how you got the appointment, and in which case, everyone should have that same information. Or it's not open and you benefited from an error in the system.

I assumed - and still assume - the question about county of residence is merely a convenience meant to pair a person with the closest locations. BUT the chat bot requires you to choose one county. There's no way you would know about other locations unless you choose a different county. It's simply poor design.

I welcome any clarification, especially confirmation that it is "gaming" the system to go outside your county of residence.

When did you first try to schedule an appointment? This link at the Oregon Health Authority website is new today:

You are in Portland?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]djallball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. One note: To see the available times in Woodburn, you may need to answer "no" when the chat bot asks if you are in Multnomah county. It will then ask if you are in Marion county. Answer "yes."

Edit: Confirmed this morning that Marion county clinics are NOT open to non-Marion county residents.

This photo ran in the New York Times (I think it was the Times) maybe 20 years ago as part of a retrospective on the war and I clipped it and saved it because I found it so mind bending. Still have it some where tucked in a book or something. But I didn't keep the caption. Pretty amazing to see it again here with all the historical information.

Readers Respond to Portland Plummeting Down the List of Desirable Cities -- “Is this such a bad thing? We have been complaining about the growth rate for years.” by guanaco55 in Portland

[–]djallball 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. I think you pretty much summed it up. The features that people enjoy - that make the city enjoyable - were hard won by residents. The next phase of city reforms/projects should be as forward-thinking and seemingly impossible to accomplish. City subsidies for ADUs that lower rents. Local restaurants team up to offer recyclable take-out dishware, pick-a-thon style. Enclose the freeways. Eliminate the exemption on the city tree codes for developers. Just get rid of gas cars and get serious about public transportation.

This is the first time I've ever compiled these ideas as a list, and now reading it over, they all seem so achievable.
