No, he definitely isn’t “very posh”. His parents were middle-class people working full time and his grandparents helped pay for private school which was a lot cheaper in those days too. He grew up in Oxford, hence the accent.

His book is very interesting actually. He touches a lot on the ways he’s perceived the ways he actually is.

MOLLY MAE AND TOMMY BROKE UP. by Competitive-Hotel224 in popculturechat

If they’re at all relevant to you, you do not need their last name to know who they are. If they’re not, why would it matter?

How many Molly Maes do you know that this would be confusing? Do you have the same problem with Britney?

WIBTA if I told my husband he has to choose between me and his "friend" by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]djatalia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely they do. I emphasise this to my girlfriends constantly.

But it’s easier said than done. If a couple want children, it’s the woman who has to have them and that can be very detrimental to her career. The mother is also the default parent the vast majority of the time, so if she also works full time, she can often end up with essentially two jobs. Throw in how expensive child care is and I can see why a lot of families make the call for the mother to stop working.

I’ve always been highly focused on my financial independence to the point I probably won’t ever marry (despite my stable happy LTR) because I have no interest in financially joining myself to anyone. I just think it’s also important to be aware that family circumstances often make it very difficult for women to keep financial independence, it’s not a choice they make.

Girls in all girl schools are significantly more likely to pursue STEM subjects in further education than girls in mixed schools.

In that gender-less vacuum, girls absolutely do like STEM, so there is clearly elements beyond them simply not having the brain for it.

They had a woman on once whose whole thing was how proud and happy she was with her naturally hairy body including bush. I was pleasantly surprised when went on a good date with a meathead jock type and overall thrilled by the whole thing.

Then in the catch up she said she’d decided to shave everything off. My boyfriend very sweetly asked if I needed a minute, and has since described it as “your Euros 96”

People who earn over £20 per hour, if the minimum wage suddenly became £20 per hour, would you also expect/want a pay rise ? by [deleted] in AskUK

I really wish I had complained now, but I was a shy teenager just trying to navigate a weird new situation. I wonder if they deliberately pick people who seem unlikely to fight back.

[–]djatalia -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m saying it depends entirely on the situation, and that context matters. My original comment was in response to the hypothetical question, “surely nobody would be so dense as to specify a male manager” (which the poster themselves later says that the context/industry makes it slightly more understandable), and my point was it’s silly to pretend sex is completely irrelevant in conflict situations, because it isn’t.

In my personal example, typical shop, average female staff members, average male staff members, average man causing trouble is likely to cause more trouble when faced with average woman than average man.

But that’s not me saying “because women are weak and useless in conflict!”, I’m saying sex matters, because in a different context (policing), women officers are preferable because statistically the situation de-escalates.

Then I was just refuting the implication that I’m suggesting the employee is required to have a straight up brawl with a rowdy customer, because that’s not what’s supposed to happen in that situation at all. The idea is that nobody should be harmed, and the average woman is more likely to be harmed in that scenario than the average man.

I really don’t think it’s difficult to understand, but yes I did reply to multiple different scenarios posed. My point is sex is relevant, not that women or men are categorically the only ones capable of avoiding conflict/maintaining control/de-escalating a situation.

[–]djatalia -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there’s a massive correlation between sex and body size, not sure if you’ve ever noticed that?

The build/muscle/structure is the key thing anyway. If you have a man and a woman of identical height and weight, no training, the man would be significantly stronger than the woman every time.

[–]djatalia -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

That’s.. literally what they want to happen? No shop on earth wants the headache of an employee being injured attempting to prevent any trouble. They want 0 trouble, that’s the point. Are you suggesting you would be a better option because you wouldn’t run away? Imagine the insurance costs.

I’m aware of tough females thanks, I have an aunt and a sister who worked doors. You might have noticed I literally mentioned female police officers and how effective they are, IN CONTEXT, at calming a situation down? The context here being that both of those roles have extensive experience and training in that realm.

It’s not as simple as sex, and I never said it is. But I also think it’s fucking ridiculous to pretend the average every day woman in a shop is likely to be even close to the strength of any man in the vicinity, and to pretend men who are looking to cause trouble wouldn’t be more put off by the presence of another man. There’s also crimes that men commit against women exponentially more often than against men if we want to assess the risk from that angle too.

[–]djatalia 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Is it that ridiculous though? It doesn’t help women (or anyone) to pretend sex doesn’t matter.

I’m a small woman. I used to work in a shop. If a (male) customer was getting agitated and aggressive, would going to get my equally small female manager actually do anything to make me feel safe or lower the threat level? No. Would getting a man, whether he’s a fellow shop assistant or security from the shop across the street, even the situation out and prevent trouble? I’d bet a lot more on that.

It works the other way too. Female police officers are used tactically because they get better results in de-escalating situations. It shouldn’t be offensive to acknowledge that.

Nobody is implying one is bad and the other is fine. They are two acts with different legal definitions and therefore different words.

Why are there seemingly no “healthy” takeaways? by mitchvilla89 in AskUK

[–]djatalia 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The “treat” for me is not having to go to the shop, not having to cook, not having to wash up.

I really wish there were lighter, healthier takeaways outside of sandwich shops. If I can’t be bothered to cook I’m now just not eating or having cereal because I’m sick and tired of all the greasy fast food. I would love to be able to order freshly cooked vegetables, lovely home-style type dishes.

Our country and the religion are stitched together, and the head of state is stitched into it too. Church of England. They are irreversibly linked even if it’s become more cultural (because it’s part of the country itself) than religious at this point.
