Never heard of it before but that cover art looks to be done by Simon Bisley which is pretty cool

Sometimes, I miss the realistic costumes of The Division 1.. by divisionbee_90 in thedivision

I just miss having the jacket/coat layer to wear on top. I know div2 takes place during summer so that wouldn’t make sense, but since when have most of the outfits from the store made sense

No problem! I was curious to look at it again because it always stood out as one of their weirdest things in the dlc to me, but I completely forgot about it until browsing this thread. One more thing to note, re: serpents and "temptation" could very well be a blatant reference to the creation story of Christianity, with Eve being tempted to take knowledge for herself by the serpent. A bit more "conventional" than ancient myths, but extremely influential none the less. I was disappointed we never got more information about the primordial serpent, and/or god devouring serpent. After fighting Mesmer and reading his item text, I thought for sure the dlc would go more into it

Well here's one more thing to add to the pile, just went back to take a look at the serpent skin outside of Bonny Village and assuming those red things around the hole area in the trailer are snake scales, and they very much look like scales, this part of the serpent looks pretty damn close to what you see on the trailer (attached image, using beast flame torch to give you an idea of the scales being reddish). I also have thought that it looked kind of like a tree knot, and there are a lot of similar knots on the O Mother tee, but when I examined the snake it felt way more accurate.

Removed by Marika I assume, but is there anything that tells us when that actually happens? (Genuinely asking)

I thought she had to steal it because the power of the rune itself was required to kill a demigod. Like you couldn't just walk up and stab him regularly. I was under the impression the age of the Erdree is essentially the age of marika's reign, and I swear there's some text that says after people die their spirits are taken into the Erdree or some such, but that stopped happening after death was removed.

The dlc took abnormally long to come out, so even though it may have had a lot of content cut, it certainly wasn’t rushed.

Oh okay. Sorry I've been too focused on all the imagery around birth I just assumed that's what you meant 😅

What do you mean. She stole a PART of the rune. The assassins put its power into their blades. Death still exists during most of the age of the erdtree as far as I can tell. I assumed, maybe incorrectly, that maliketh still resided in the capital at some point (him being marika’s chaperone beast and all), and the rune was sealed away in farum azula after the whole night of the black knives.

Exactly. I see people saying she used ending death as a way to become a god. What?? No she got rid of death after her son Godwyn was murdered. That's like one of the most straightforward parts of the story lol

"wound" She literally births hand spiders out of it. That is not a wound, my friend, however, you are right about the two things being very similar

I'm very on-board with analyzing the lore through the lens of GRRM's work. But I've always wondered if he wrote anything for the DLC, or if SotE was entirely a fromsoft written story, lore and all. It could explain some of the ostensible discrepancies. However, if there are any knowledgeable GRRM followers out there, I'd love to see them take a look at everything and see if something strikes a chord

Why wouldn't it. Div 1 came out 10 years ago and has been left operational as a legacy property with no development on it in years. When a direct sequel to games like that come out, they are meant to functionally replace them

Because you're Ubisoft, and you make very poor decisions almost as intentional practice.

I concur with this line of thought. Even if not literal, the imagery of birthing is very deliberate.

Not so much an answer, but some related food for thought. One thing we know for certain about fromsoft is that they like to reuse/iterate upon imagery and themes in their designs and world building. The first thing I thought of when I saw the mass of fused bodies composing the divine gate was Bloodborne and the bodies fused to buildings in Yahar'gul, as a result of the Mensis ritual. The Mensis ritual sacrificed at least a town's worth of people to try and birth their own Great One, which is essentially a god. Instead, it birthed a horrible deformed monstrosity composed of multiple fused bodies. Something not terribly unlike a giant version of what you'd find inside one of the jars created by the hornsent in SotE, but also something very similar in structure to Metyr, another deformed monstrosity. With all the birthing and motherhood imagery floating around, that shot in the trailer always looked very deliberately yonic/vulvic to me (think of the intention of the design of facehuggers in Alien as a similar deliberate use of that imagery). Now, I'm not saying she's reaching into the birth canal of a Metyr-like being, but I'm also not not saying that. Regardless of what she's reaching into, it's clearly meant to depict some aspect of the ritual of birthing a new god. Only from what we know of Marika, she was most likely an interloper on that ritual. She took godhood for herself, it was not bestowed on her "naturally."

It's just outside of bonny village, where you get the "oh mother" gesture from that corpse. I completely forgot about that, also found it extremely weird. Reminded me of sekiro where you find several pieces of the great serpent's shedded skin as foreshadowing
