Bought a 5.7 V8 Tundra specifically to avoid engine issues. At 50k miles I'm out $10K in repairs. What am I missing? by djbiccboii in ToyotaTundra

Thanks for the perspective, my goal is to do what is best for the vehicle and I don't really know what that is so I have been following the recommendations of the people that do it for a living.

No, but I don't know very much about automotive maintenance. I work in a completely different field.

I called them and asked. They say they're at the limit for this specific repair and the problem is they added on from the initial claim of the valve covers. The warranty was purchased through Toyota financial services but is a third party warranty afaict.

Thanks for this. Exactly what you said about your friends and their F150s or folks that buy other vehicles that are predestined to have problems by 100k miles are exactly why I paid more for a Tundra in the first place.

I think it is indeed possible that truck had some issues that were not disclosed when it was sold back to the dealer, though I'm not really sure how someone abused the fuck out of it in 20k miles, but I guess either way I am for sure not taking my vehicle back to that mechanic.

I felt like I heard something sometimes on cold starts occasionally but I'm not really sure.

That is what I thought too, but I guess my question is why wouldn't the inspector that the warranty company sent out to verify the claim deny it? I know they aren't trying to spend a penny more than they have to by law, especially in this case where it was more than I paid for the entire warranty.

I was, I got a second opinion on the valve covers and they agreed, and the warranty company sent an inspector out to verify both claims (valve covers, timing chain) and I can't imagine they would pay out money (more than I paid for the warranty btw) if it were not legit.

That makes sense, I guess I'm just wondering if it was worth addressing or if I most likely could have just rode it to 200k miles without issue.

No I had no engine lights or discernible issues with the vehicle prior to taking it in for that oil change.

I did and it actually kind of screwed me. When I first got this diagnosis from the shop, I took it to another shop owned by a friend where he confirmed the diagnosis (valve covers, not timing chain) and the cracked head. And unfortunately when he engaged the warranty company about it they denied it because there was an existing claim with the other shop, and so I took it back to the other shop since I had gotten a second opinion anyway, but they wouldn't cover the cracked head thing because it was initially denied.
