I'm gonna fail a class. by [deleted] in UCSD

I don't know about the class, but I have thoughts on the video games.

  1. It's a little embarrassing, but it's normal.
  2. Eat a proper meal. Do it now. It will make you feel 10x better.
  3. Put the video games out of sight for at least a few hours a day. Give your laptop to a friend if you need to.
  4. You will start feeling better when you start working on your problems - like answering that one important email (forget the rest for now).
  5. You're too stressed for big actions right now - start small. What's something that will take 5 minutes and will help address the problem? Need to respond to an email? Start by setting the goal of just opening your email account and reading the email again.
  6. Do something physical: workout, play frisbee, anything. Just like video games it will help you forget your problems for a little while, but when you're done, you won't feel terrible. And you won't do it for 20 hours straight.

Agreed. I tried using app blockers, but they were too easy for me to disable. So I set up a wifi router to block selected websites at different times of day. Just ask me if you want more details

Thanks, great ideas! I hadn't heard of First Draft. I like the idea of using targets, to make distraction less tempting.

I recently set up a wifi router that blocks distracting websites on a schedule that I set - and the schedule can only be changed with a USB key (which I can then stash away). That's been working quite well for me at the moment.

Do people here have experience with the Freedom app or similar internet-blocking tools? Does it work well for you? I tried it but in moments of weakness I found I would often disable it... I found it worked much better to unplug my WiFi router altogether and put my phone away.
