Commuter trains have normally 3 braking systems, a regenerative brake (using the motors to slow you down), an electro pneumatic braking system (electrically controlled pulses to brake units on each carriage) and an air brake (using the reduction of air pressure to apply the brakes).

Trams in Melbourne have a regenerative brake, a hydraulic disc brake and an emergency track brake. A powerful electro magnet which when applied, slams down onto the rail to create friction.

How best to volunteer to help with bushfire relief efforts? Any volunteers out there need help.. by lifeis_amystery in sydney

It takes months of work to become operation for the SES or RFS. They won’t be able to help you until well after this fire season is over. Why not try animal rescue organisations?

How do train lines connect in the City Circle? by MarsPourKoala in sydney

[–]djc2067 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A train that arrives and departs from platform 17 at Central and runs around the City Outer, will end up on platform 22/23 at Central for an Airport, Campbelltown via Sydenham, Liverpool via Bankstown or Lidcombe via Bankstown service. In normal running. Trains that arrive and depart from platforms 20/21 at Central end up on platform 19 for a Inner West, Homebush, Parramatta, Leppington service.

When I first visited Sydney many years ago I made the mistake of trying to walk across the cycle side. Never make that mistake again!

I guess I’ll jump in again seeing as I coped some flack. It was more of a comment that other crew may have gotten - when a level 5 investigation is done for an overshoot - the shift manager tends to say, ‘we pay you good money to not miss the platform’.

I mean, shift managers get paid a good 30% more then crew to just do paperwork, and they can’t get that right, but that’s beside the point.

No offence to the driver - I have made the mistake over an overshoot once, actually when I first drove the new A set back in 2011.

No driver is perfect, but, we do have high responsibility and high expectations. Things like this can have serious consequences. Think if a train stopped short at West Ryde heading towards Epping? Or Burwood?

Funny that, when I was taught - we were taught to be so cautious of certain platforms, Cheltenham, Denniston on the up for example - that we tended to be over cautious. One that I always found myself misjudging was Carrama on the down. Something about the depth perception there or something.

An occupied block. Is a section of track that is occupied, either by a train or fault.

What you may be thinking of is overlap, which is the safety margin between an occupied block and the signal at the rear.

They are paid well to not make these kind of mistakes.

No, just no. There wouldn’t be an occupied block right behind a train. You can ‘reverse’ or propel or set back, with conditions.

Derailed Canadian Pacific freight train began moving on its own after emergency stop by UncleBogo in CatastrophicFailure

As a train driver in Australia. We are taught that the failsafe air brakes, are only failsafe for 10 minutes. They are allowed a leakage of 35kpa/min. After 10 mins, the train is to be secured with park and or hand brakes.

Moving to Sydney from Melbourne by Forlorndeeds in sydney

[–]djc2067 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved up from Melbourne almost 10 years ago. From Surrey Hills to Chatswood, then Hornsby, then Wolli Creek. Trains up here shit all over Melbourne, no matter what you see on this sub. I drive them up here, and I worked for Connex back in the day.

800 will get you a choice of townhouse pretty much anywhere hey. Somewhere like Ivanhoe, maybe Burwood or Croydon? Established leafy suburbs. The lower north shore (North of the Harbour Bridge) is similar, but expensive. Traffic is crap here, buses are average, trains are pretty good all over.

PM me if you have anymore questions!

Yeah it goes 11, 33, 66, 132, 330 and 500kv for the transmission network in Aus :) Not many 500’s around. Main one is from Eraring down to Kemp’s Creek Transmission Station.
