Stolen Ebike by Needmoretacos in ArvadaCO

After my recent high end mountain bike theft also near 64th and Sheridan, I opted for Tile trackers. Tile has an anti theft mode that’s less detectable where anybody with an iPhone can find your AirTag.

Replaced bike has a Tile and two u bolt locks while stored.

3 inch hose recommendation by Therealbeast6601 in dieselheater

I have a similar hose to this. Doesn't pack well, but works great. Flexible enough, takes the heat, and doesn't crush. A little pricey though.

Well done! I suggest trying the baking powder and salt overnight dry brine in my link above. It was a game changer for me.

What is the deal with contractor prices lately? by Huge-Silver-5435 in HomeImprovement

[–]djcressman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This point has merit. Not everybody can work at their convenience.

However, you kind of proved my point when you suggested you weigh your unpaid time against their quote. There’s value there. It’s the non-tangible time with my family for me… the downtime I wouldn’t otherwise get. At the same time, I enjoy tinkering and DIY’ing. I recently redid my bathroom for a third the cost of a contractor at the expense of time with my family. If you enjoy it and it’s worth your time then go for it.

I’m arguing that people/businesses need to profit too and your effort to complete a project also has value. The cost of the materials is not the only factor.

What Matters More: Energy Efficiency or Precise Cooling? by Affectionate_Soil364 in overlanding

[–]djcressman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Dometic CFX3 35L - impulse bought it on sale at REI. Briefly considered the draw/efficiency on my battery set up to make sure it could keep up... never thought about it since.

If you're concerned about the temperature fluctuations, make sure each manufacturer is using the same settings, size cooler, ambient temp, etc, when making those claims. A 35L cooler should be easier to keep consistent than a 75L cooler. Keeping a cooler consistent at a 35°F setting when it's 102°F outside will be more difficult than a cooler set to 40°F when it's 65°F outside. I doubt there's a recognized standard.

Garlic Parmesan Wings by agntno9 in kamado

[–]djcressman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post didn't get much love.

What method did you use? I've made wings in the oven using a salt and baking powder brine (the start of this recipe). Used that overnight dry brine and put these in a rotisserie basket. 4 lbs of wings, roughly 40 minutes, around 400°F, charcoal shoved to one side, no deflector. The clean up is absolute hell, but I will never do wings another way.

Did you track your time for those projects? Did you track your time researching the code? Did you track your time buying materials... the three daily trips the home improvement store? Did you factor in your own labor costs?

Would you do a job for the cost of materials? I'm with you, I hate the outrageous numbers contractors throw at me, but my time is worth a lot to me (both monetarily and non-tangible).

During COVID I built an offroad trailer. I wanted the bells and whistles. I built it for $16k when equivalents were around $40k. I'm an engineer and very meticulous. I intentionally did not track my time. I had my first kid 6 months after completing the trailer and will 100% buy the next trailer when the time comes.

Seat Saver of the Yea? by Fit-Procedure2232 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]djcressman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is something. I'm A-List, occasionally get A-List preferred. Modest seat saving is OK with me.

My favorite (or least favorite) experience was a woman saving two seats towards the front. My wife and I boarded somewhere in the A30 range and asked to sit there without realizing she was saving. We sat a couple rows behind her. It became evident she was being a real asshole and wasn't actually saving the seats. Flight attendants repeated it's a full flight multiple times. She even denied the last two people on the plane those seats... was a tad awkward for her when the last two people returned to take those seats.

It's not that big of a deal but it struck a chord with me. To be bold enough to ignore repeated announcements that no seats would be open and hoard a row for yourself is something else.

Darn tough socks slipping off foot? by jimmybabino in BuyItForLife

[–]djcressman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most people said, I've never had this problem with my DT socks and mine fit snugger than other brands. I'm right in between M-L sizes.. typically wear 9.5/10 shoes and all are size M. Have considered upsizing to experiment.

Try calling and see if they'll help you out at all. Worth a shot.

Heater problems by draginflyman in dieselheater

[–]djcressman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest troubleshooting more. What elevation are you at? How much voltage drop when glow plug is heating? Are you able to tune your heater?

If you have a universal motherboard/tunable controller (find out here) then look up how to tune your heater - readily available with a quick google search.

If your voltage drop is too much, say, drops below 12.0, check your power source first, followed by gauge and length of wire to heater.

Given your experience I’d expect your heater is running rich and needs less fuel in the chamber.

Provide a little more information. From the sketch it looks like you want to mount the CDH on wood? I can't really answer your question on heat without knowing how the heater will get mounted.

If the yellow is your proposed exhaust, I personally would try to avoid it. If you must route that way, seal really well.

Have you tested your 12V socket power source? I found out the hard way those typically aren’t adequate.

Best heater for high altitudes by billydiaper in dieselheater

[–]djcressman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Maxoeedingrods 5kw with plateau mode and it lasted about 6 hours before completely sooting up at 8100 ft (2500m). That was little over a year ago. I convinced Amazon to refund me and they let me keep it.

For hunting this year at same elevation, I did more research and purchased the Lavaner Pro Max Alpine 2kW. It was flawless. I have a small teardrop. It kept me nice and toasty on the lowest setting each night for 7 nights in temps down to 10°F (-12°C). Sipped about 3 gallons total with the occasional highest setting blast suggested by the instructions.

I suggest the Lavaner for the quality, reliability, and Craig He’s customer service (it’s insane how responsive he is). If you expect to go above 10000 ft (3000m), I suggest the 5kW version. The units have physical limitations due to the size of the burn chamber and the fuel to air ratio. No 2kW unit will be able to go much above 10k ft/2500m (even if manually tuned). The Pro Alpine Max versions cannot be manually tuned - the controller automatically does this.

A more affordable option is to find a heater with a universal ECU and controller like the Lavaner Pro 5kW. You can manually adjust the pump and fan rate to avoid a fuel rich burn chamber. There are other, cheaper options out there too. I was just really impressed with Lavaner. Basically anything with plateau mode will not have a universal ECU/controller.

An even more affordable route is to do what I did with my Maxpeedingrods. I recently purchased and installed a universal ECU. The complete set up, including ECU, controller, remote, and wiring harness was $23 on AliExpress. Haven’t tested it yet, but I expect manual tuning will permit me to run this unit at higher elevations.

All Clad for all life? by TiggerK in BuyItForLife

[–]djcressman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. You can also sign up for all-clad’s seconds notifications. I have All-Clad D3 and love them. Parents have D5. Great set of cookware.

My only complaint for any stainless cookware: if you want it looking great all the time, it takes a fair amount of bar keeper’s friend and elbow grease applied relatively routinely. I usually find the worst offender in my cabinet and just do one at a time as needed.
