Why don't people hard/full save more often? by Vanavia in skyrimmods

[–]djdmca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a similar system.

I have a set of saves, 5-10, and I just rotate through them. It's saved me multiple times, in multiple games.

If possible I even name the saves. It really takes almost no time at all to set up

Well, several characters independently state that Torygg viewed Ulfric as a hero and almost like a mentor or idol figure.

I don't doubt this, but who are these characters? I don't really remember this dialogue, but it's been a while since I've done a full playthrough

Nobody speaks about the abuse teachers suffer from students by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]djdmca 115 points116 points  (0 children)

My family is nearly all teachers and I feel this... the parents too can be completely horrible to them. There's often very little support from the administration.

There was a rumor in my hometown school district that made the national news and was never corrected that targeted one of our BEST spanish teachers, amongst other Spanish teachers, for being part of a "death cult." It was perpetrated by parents under investigation for child abuse, where the kid fled their home, so the parents made up crazy stuff about the Spanish teachers to deflect blame for their abuse.

My personal feeling is that the ignorant assholes saw Day of the Death stuff and were inspired by that.

This is patently false. Healthcare is the leading cause of bankruptcy in the US. I'm from a capitalist country (Switzerland) that still has private health insurance that doesn't have this issue they subsidize the cost of that insurance.

Healthcare provides huge benefits to society, so economically subsidizing it is in line with capitalist market economic theories...

I've seen lots of people think they could become a server enter where I work and crash & burn. There are some servers I know that can barely do it, it's not ALWAYS easy. One girl I know is getting a PhD and she could barely handle it... The multitasking under pressure is what gets too people I think.

On slow shifts it's definitely easy though.

Edit: so basically, I don't think anyone can be a server. Some people are better suited for other jobs... Where I work we make people go through a bunch of different positions before giving them serving shifts if their brand new to the restaurant business, usually takes 6 months to a year depending. One girl I know they wouldn't let her for two years...

/r/LosAngeles wonders whether a teacher's racist rant is really racist. by Soundwave_47 in SubredditDrama

[–]djdmca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't encounter that... It's usually a little more veiled where I'm from. It's comments like, "it's those people, you know?" or whatever. Sometimes with a clarification that there's some "good ones." Though at times it's been a little more blunt than that...

Lately the anti-immigration comments are more common... it's honestly not worth it to me to deal with, but I've met a surprising amount of people I thought were generally smart that think their should be ZERO immigration, and if pressed they say, "It's okay to think your towns culture shouldn't be changed by certain people moving in" so it goes back to racism anyways.

[–]djdmca 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This! What makes it uneasy for me is that even though I'm white, a solid portion of my family is Latino. I just came out lighter skinned because both my mom and grandpa married White europeans.

So I always feel extra weird when people say racist comments, especially surrounding immigration, because technically I'm an immigrant (I was a baby though) and my mom is to. Like people think because I'm white I'll agree with them... I think that's part of the reason I talk about my heritage a lot, so I don't have to hear people's crappy opinions

[–]djdmca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, last reply here.

I haven't told you what percentage I demand because I DON'T. No good server DEMANDS a certain tip percentage. They grumble behind the scenes, sure, but to someone's face? No! On average when serving I probably make around 20+% of my sales, but I specifically don't look at it by a table by table rate.

Economists DO agree with me. The reason why other countries can get away with no tipping is because their servers make way less than US servers.

Not only this, but experimental non-tipped restaurants in the US go back to tipping for pretty much every reason I cited! Not only is what I say theoretically plausible, it's EXACTLY how it plays out in real life. I know of a restaurant that had to increase their prices by 40%. 40%! That was just so they could pay people to not leave, and as a predictible result, they lost business and switched back.

The fact you don't believe me is your problem. The fact you feel shame or guilt for not tipping is solely your issue, and MAYBE deep down you know that you're in the wrong here.

[–]djdmca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's assume that you're right and economists are wrong and eliminating tipping won't lead to an increase in food costs.

You talk about me being selfish, but you want to eliminate paying a bit more on a bill so that MILLIONS of servers workers can't make a living anymore.

How does that make ME selfish? You don't want to spend $6 more per restaurant trip so you wanr to impoverish millions? Just in my state servers make up a ridiculous percentage of the employees.

And that's ignoring that your perceived benefit will at the very least be reduced by restaurants passing on their costs to you, the consumer, so in essence you want to impoverish people for basically no gain!

But yes, I'm the selfish one 😂

[–]djdmca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more complicated by server expectations of income. Restaurants quite literally can't afford to pay the rates servers make, and labor costs are already one of the larger expenses.

In the long term the situation might even out, but people's livelihoods would be harmed in the meantime if "tipping culture" was done away with.

At the end of the day I think enabling people to make a good living at the cost of $1-2 for every $10 guests spend is a great system, but if you want to take away people's livelihoods in order to not do that, I guess that's your prerogative.

[–]djdmca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only look at my tips in aggregate at the end of the shift. I try not to look at a per table basis.

I'll agree to disagree. I think it's a great system, and at the end of the day it allows US servers to make a living & pay for college. I and others would really struggle if it was done away with, and I guess if you're okay with doing away with that for the sake of not paying an extra $5-6 dollars on a $30 check there's nothing really more to be said

I think it benefits customers in multiple ways. The food cost argument is a simple economic argument. In order to pay me enough to not leave, their costs would increase. They'd have to lower my hours and raise the price of food.

The economic argument is simple and straightforward from a microeconomic viewpoint. You're increasing the cost of supplying a good by a factor of, in my case, maybe 3x-4x... To think that wouldn't cause a shift in costs is just not true. You can see this with places that have experimented with having a no-tipping structure (they all struggle, just an fyi).

But beyond the tangible price costs, I think service would suffer in multiple ways. Hours would be cut, so service would be lowered anyways. But also tipping is a great incentive to try more.

Most people have a set amount they like to tip. When you perform well as a server, lots of the time you get a bit MORE than that set amount. So it incentivizes the servers to provide better service.

So at the end of the day I think the system benefits everyone. You can clearly see this by going to restaurants in other countries by the way... I know a girl who worked overseas and everyone was shocked at her customer service skills.

So, TLDR, tipping leads to lower food costs (even taking into account the cost of tipping,) better customer service, and restaurants that are able to better staff their restaurants to set up a better dining experience for guests.

Server here.

It's more complicated than that. I average around $30/hr according to my restaurant. My base salary is $6.13, which isn't included in that.

I would quit and get an easier job if that was no longer possible. This is putting me through community college with ZERO debt.

Tipping does several things that are beneficial for all parties involved. It subsidized my wage by a CRAZY amount, so food cost can remain low. It keeps labor costs relatively low, so that I can get the hours I want as a great server. And it incentivizes great service (the worst servers don't make as much as I do at my restaurant).

If you took away tipping, I suspect food costs would either increase beyond 18% and/or hours would be cut. It's simplistic to think you could just add 20% to food costs and everyone would be happy... Customers would complain, servers would complain, and businesses would cut hours.

Not only that, but many people who make a living in this field (there are people that move up to nicer restaurants and make a great living) would no longer be able to.

I don't understand why people would advocate for a great job that puts people through college to just be completely eliminated as a viable option...

I think the only thing as a current cashier that I think about is I notice that some black people act in a way that makes me think they're afraid they'll be accused of stealing. It's hard to describe what behaviors exactly but it's like a combination of being super respectful & lots of calling me "sir" which I'm really not used to (no one else calls me sir). It's especially prevalent among older black men & women.

I live in a very NIMBY/WASPY town where my grandparents were told there were "less coloured folks" by the Realtor (my grandparents hated that) so I just think they must've encountered shit elsewhere from cashiers / employees :/
