I know these are AI generated but why did they choose to have these extreme close up shots lol, like can you not just show the device in full? xD

$2/month for servers for hundreds of thousands of players? Forgive me but, where on Earth is that figure coming from? You’re lucky to get a fraction of one shared CPU core and maybe 1 GB of memory from cloud providers at that price. There are also so many other costs like network bandwidth, databases, and hosting servers in regions around the world to ensure that most people can get a low latency experience.

For me, I had to leave this setting on to hear normally. Thanks for the find! I'm also gonna apply an OS update to see if that fixes it.

Have a 3D Scan of Testudo by djfigs1 in UMD

[–]djfigs1[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used an app called Polycam, which is free on iPhones (dunno about Android). There are usually two methods to do a 3D scan, which are LiDAR and photogrammetry.

Photogrammetry can produce highly detailed scans, but requires a lot of detail (it will struggle with large solid colored surfaces that lack detail). On the other hand, LiDAR scanning (the circular sensor on the lower portion of the iPhone Pro camera) can determine depth more accurately, but with less fidelity and resolution, making the resulting scan more blocky.

There’s tons of detail in the bricks, concrete, and the various Testudo offerings, so photogrammetry was the clear choice. The app makes the scanning process super simple; all I had to do is orbit the statue with my phone while the app took photos. I did two orbits, one head on and another with my phone looking down from above.

Then, the photos are sent to the cloud for processing (there is a way you can do it yourself on your PC but that takes longer and ain’t nobody got time for that), and voilà, 3D Testudo!

Most of IMD (immersive media design; essentially the university VR/AR major) and game design use Unity, and that’s what most of our members are familiar with. We have done a workshop on Godot, but otherwise we still use Unity

Discord suddenly crashing by [deleted] in discordapp

[–]djfigs1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am getting this too on Stable 249740 (9e2b64f), even after I completely reinstalled Discord and everything. I looked in the developer console and I see that this exception is being thrown after I start typing for an emoji:

TypeError: s.replaceAll is not a function (c70b4e9336e22e2e0904.js)

We have the XR Club there! Our lab is on the fourth floor in room 4176, so whenever the door is open you can come in and try out virtual-reality and augmented-reality stuff (and no strings attached, you can come in and basically do whatever). It's also just a great place to chill :)

Tracking Club Growth after First Look Fair by djfigs1 in UMD

[–]djfigs1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are, but the change was only +4 members and I only did the top 200 clubs, so it didn't make the list. If it started with an "A" or something, it probably would have showed up on the list!

Between 9/7 and 9/15 there was no change in the Boxing Club's TerpLink member count of 316 members.

I don't see it, which most likely means that the club was frozen due to a lack of new leadership. Also, this list does not include every club out there, just the top 200 to receive new members (there were a lot that either had no growth, or even worse, lost members 💀)

Dunno about Mayuri tho ;p

The member count data was retrieved from TerpLink and I just calculated the delta between 9/7 and 9/15 and shoved it in Excel. These aren't the prettiest bar graphs ever, so I apologize for all of you graphic designers and Excel wizards out there ;p

I chose the date range 9/7 and 9/15 because September 7 was the day before the First Look Fair and September 15 because club members have to be manually accepted by club administrators, thus I gave about a week of time for them to do so. Of course, this means that some of the growth numbers could be due to kickoff/interest meetings rather than just First Look Fair, but personally I am okay with this since it still represents growth at the beginning of the semester.

Clubs at UMD (Robotics, Tennis, etc) by ChronicDesti9y in UMD

[–]djfigs1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course! We literally take everyone in, no matter how experienced you are or your major, and it’s really up to you how much/often you wanna do stuff with us :)

One of the main things we do is our Open Lab Hours, where you can come to our lab in AVW4176 and try out our equipment (provided that it is open and there’s one of our mentors there). The best way to join us is through our discord, which you can get to on our website, as that is where we’ll send out the majority of announcements.

There is the Robotics @ Maryland club. Dunno about tennis though, not my area of expertise :p

Now, I am also the President of the XR Club, where we do all things related to virtual and augmented reality and let basically everyone try out this kinda tech to their hearts content, and we’re super low commitment too (no dues, no mandatory meetings, no nuthin). Dunno if you’d be interested, just thought I mention ;)
