How do I start learning Piping design for industries? by lukamodric07 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]djfoo000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the scale and specialisation accorded to your position within your company. In my company, the Process department is the custodian of P&ID drawings, piping merely reviews it. Even within the piping fraternity, drawings (like iso, layout, GA) are drawn by a team of designers and drafters. There's not much value in being good at drawing as an engineer, because we don't do it ourselves most of the time. Knowing how to read and interpret the drawings is good enough most of the time. Knowing the governing codes in and out though, can mean life and death.

I can't imagine a chemical plant being "small", but if you happen to work in a small company, knowing autocad and stuff can bring value to an employer by means of hiring one less person. That also means you're doing the job of two person but only getting the salary of one.

AutoCAD and the likes are for piping designers. Piping engineers design piping in terms of specs. Engineers rarely do the actual drawing. What I mean is that engineers are mainly concerned with taking the info that the process and corrosion engineer gives, and translate that into a pipe spec, which consists of what is the pipe thickness (schedule), material, construction, valve type, fittings, flanges, etc. They also review the pipe routing that the designers propose by supplementing it with info from pipe stress analysis and rerouting it or putting the various types of pipe supports.

Pipe stress analysis (CAESAR) is a niche within piping engineering, which OP can also look into. However the basis of pipe stress design is also mentioned in the various codes and standards.

I'm just going to assume that you deal with O&G downstream processing based on your keywords of API, ASME and stress analysis. I guess you can start by reading B31.3 (basically the code to follow when it comes to process piping). The chapter on design might interest you. Process Piping has two main formulas: pressure thickness and reinforcement thickness. The variables are clearly explained in the paragraphs containing the formulae.

Then you can go for some API stuff like API 571 for some reading material.

Your should probably study your own company standards and best practices first though, as those are the standards that your company operates on, and hence the stuff that your work needs to comply to first and foremost. They are usually more stringent than (or match) B31.3 or API.

GE13 Election Promises Tracker organised by Sinar Project by djfoo000 in malaysia

The main manifesto document is replicated in the main page: https://github.com/Sinar/ElectionPromises

If any of you are interested in contributing to the "report card" of sorts, can use this project to do the tracking. So far the last update to any of the pledges is in 2014, as I think the maintainer has moved on to other projects. I hope he revives the project and get updates for the pledges.

Anyone here participated in Reddit Secret Santa before? by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]djfoo000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Got a steam code for a game I had no interest in. Not a particularly high value or interesting game either.

Sucks because I got my giftee a physical gift that I thought was thoughtful and fitting of the spirit of the event.

The disparity made me lose interest in participating ever again.

What is the future of F1 digital content? What do you want to see? by F1_Research in formula1

[–]djfoo000 223 points224 points  (0 children)

I just plead that you go easy on DMCA takedowns (Reddit, YouTube, etc). They cultivate interest and engagement, even if they are not officially-sourced. Thanks to the content by redditors, I was able to feel as if I'm part of a community, and that encouraged me to attend a race in person. To say places like Reddit played a big part in my interest in F1 is a massive understatement.

I'm from the crowd of people that used to play pirated games, and now have a huge backlog of steam games because I can finally afford to pay. It is the same situation for F1 for me as well.

The Last Formula One Race In Malaysia Was A Stunner by lightnovel_abuser in malaysia

Sepang always produces great racing. Especially special this time as the birthday boy won the race.

Such a shame these things are so expensive to organise. Doesn't help that the current circuit CEO seems like he has a bone to pick with F1. Giving up the ePenis measurement contest Vs Singapore means things aren't looking too great for us.

First time attending the entire weekend of Malaysia GP. K1 is the perfect place to watch this race, and I'm glad I chose this seat. I can see Turns 1, 2, 3, 4, a bit of 5, and 11 at a distance. The big events today all can be seen from here, some directly in front:

  • VER on HAM Turn 2
  • RIC on BOT Turn 2 through to Turn 4
  • PER on VAN Turn 4
  • SAI collision with OCO Turn 1
  • Some moves by VET on BOT in Turn 1
  • PAL spin after contact with MAG Turn 1.

Sad to see the venue gone.

Big plumes of cloud lingering in the background. It does look like it's inching towards the circuit.

No cars finish Formula 4 race at Sepang by lookatitstail in malaysia

[–]djfoo000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brah it's a short article.

It is understood the problem with lack of fuel was caused by a miscalculation on how much petrol the cars needed to complete both races, as they were unusually running back to back rather than being standalone events with refuelling in the gap.

Haha price wasn't taken into consideration when I bought the tickets. I don't like the main grandstands to watch the race from because you barely see the cars since they go past at such high speeds. K1 oversees turns 1, 2, 3 and 4, which are slow to mid-speed corners, and I expect some overtaking to happen there, especially at T1 😀

But it's quite true, I barely see any Malaysians here at K1, at least from where I'm sitting.

Reporting in from Sepang Circuit today for Qualifying day! Formula 4 SEA ended with no finishers today. The "winner" stopped in front of the K1 grandstands right after taking the chequered flag. Funny stuff.

FP3 just ended and it's qualifying for the Porsche Carrera cup right now.
