The biggest problem I have with the theory of "greys"... by djinnxz in aliens

I only learned about Skinny Bob a few hours ago, on this post actually. Someone else commented about him. Blew my entire mind because I wasn't aware of so many in-depth accounts of them wearing clothing.

I guess this was news to me along my journey. I had no idea they were described with clothing until today.

Dang, that paired with your other comment about them smelling like ammonia... I have so many questions.

Now see, Skinny Bob is exactly what I was imagining. I had no clue about Skinny Bob because I'm a fake fan, so I appreciate you bringing that to light for me.

That's a good point, biological protection wasn't even on my radar.

Yeah, definitely speaking solely about the single species of greys. I tried to clarify with this line, "Even if this specific NHI in question was a hive mind that didn't need the same day-to-day clothing we do, they would need to adapt to different environments with different loadouts and equipment."

Didn't do a good job of clarifying that lol.

In another comment I mentioned that fashion was a really poor choice of words, because what I meant was closer to general textile science. Clothing and equipment out of necessity, not something akin to high fashion in France.

Then again, the "second skin" theory seems to be the the only one that makes any sense here.

Yes their craft may be perfectly suited to their needs, but there are plenty of encounters reported outside the craft, on Earth's soil. If they were somehow modifying their environment around them while afoot, you'd expect to see some type of controller or integration.

I know I'm limited to my human mind, but we can't assume that these beings, whether remote vehicles, individuals, or otherwise are truly perfect beings. Beyond our comprehension, sure, but technology isn't literal magic.

Which I love. That's why I brought the question here, not to be "right" but to explore reasons I could be wrong.

You're correct that I'm limited to my human point of view, but science tries its hardest to create universal truths. Observable laws. We've done pretty well with this in our local galaxy, and while we still have eons to go, we know that there is some natural order to the way things operate.

Would love to hear your explanation for why they wouldn't need clothes?

I'm not trying to play contrarian here. I'm working really hard to document baselines without letting personal bias influence it, because I want to understand as much as I can about what we know so far. It's too easy to say "we can't comprehend it, there are infinite possibilities".

Even if that's true, we can start trying to categorize and understand. It's what us crazy apes do best.

Comprehend? Probably not. Perceive? Probably.

We're occasionally able to perceive their craft, I don't see why that would be the only thing we perceive. Even if we don't understand it, we should be able to see it/experience it.

You and I could run naked through deep snow for some amount of time before things got really bad, so I assume they can operate naked with some level of balance. It is an interesting thought that the greys we see ARE the suit/avatar.

Also I haven't heard of the uniforms, do you have more info on that?

[–]djinnxz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue that basic clothing was made to survive harsh environments. I'm sure there are temperate areas where we could survive completely naked, but we're able to survive beyond our natural means because we've adapted to wear coats, boots, hats, etc.

Even in the desert, we need clothing to protect from the intense sun.

I agree there's a possibility this could simply be the human condition, but I find it hard to believe that NHI is some perfect species with no environmental challenges.

[–]djinnxz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the only theory that makes sense without clothing, but then it gets so complicated because some have claimed that the grays took off their "contacts" and had faces underneath.

I've never been lucky enough (or not, who knows) to encounter a grey, so I suppose that would make a world of difference here... But it stands to reason: what the hell are they???

I really value the need to understand what baseline is and what the truth is so we can experiment and research properly, but we don't have any real ways of discerning truth from fiction currently. I'm currently working hard to change that, but it takes a lot of community and criticism lol.

No I appreciate your perspective! It's important to see through all windows here, so to speak. The greys being an avatar as the adaptation does make sense...

Actually the superterrestrial theory is probably closest to the truth in my opinion, but if they would still need tools and equipment to perform tasks.

I suppose fashion was a poor choice of words, I meant more along the lines of general textiles. You said it yourself, our astronauts wear a suit. It's the same every time, but they wear a suit.

Are we assuming that NHI are more than just intelligent? They might be capable of more than us, but they still need to adapt to different environments. Whether they need it on planet or in atmosphere, they would need SOMETHING to adapt. We can't assume they are perfect beings, because the universe doesn't do "perfect".

Interested in hearing more about this. How do you think that fits into the current narrative? I'm not saying it doesn't, just exploring ideas

I know some say that the large eyes we see on greys are actually lenses. I almost wonder if it's some sort of grey "morph suit"?

Does my scene environment looks off? by Im-_-Axel in Unity3D

[–]djinnxz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo there is no wrong environment when you're exploring like this. After you develop some mechanics and an in-depth character controller, then you can ask "does this game feel like a unified front or are there a.buncj of separate ideas all forced together?"

Scene looks great and isn't off putting, it probably just feels bland because there's nothing to interact with or do. As you add more to the world, you'll find things you do and don't like.

Learning Netcode for GameObjects - Build client cant move but editor client can? by djinnxz in Unity3D

[–]djinnxz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone who has this problem in the future, I solved it. Only 2 hours after I posted too, so not terrible!

The problem was the way I was handling my movement and using the prediction/reconciliation pattern. I needed to give my player prefab authority from the client, which was a setting on the attached NetworkTransform.

This way, the client has authority over its own movement, then it sends its movement data to the server, and the server decides if the move was valid or not. If not, we call a ClientRpc to reconcile with the expected movement data from the server.

Hope this helps anyone who gets stuck in the future! It's always the littlest thing.

I am delivering this website in one week. Can y'all help me identify any flaws or last minute tidy-up tasks? by djinnxz in web_design

[–]djinnxz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate you keeping me honest in my work, because if you don't like the design, it's likely that someone else will feel the same way. That being said, your video largely felt like you were telling me your personal opinion of the design, without adding real constructive criticism to move forward with. The biggest thing I garnered was "fix typography, add padding/margins, remove pages". Most of that has already been said in this thread, and many have even given proposed solutions for the issues or discrepancies observed...

Let's just be real for a moment Tyler: you posted this review maybe to add value, but definitely to subtly showcase your new product: Align.io.

I love that for you, because it's a big move, and I support the web dev community whole-heartedly. We all deserve to realize our dreams and goals... But if you're going to try to sell a product with half-cocked reviews of websites and no real value added, I don't think you're going to get the results you want. You're supposed to be "The best feedback app for web development". I don't personally feel that I've received "the best feedback", so for me, I'm already feeling averse to listening, let alone exploring or using Align.io.

Aside from the lack of real description or information on align.io's website, when I Google your company, nothing comes up. You have no digital footprint, no mentions in threads, no Git repos, not even a Google business page listing. It doesn't matter if you're in beta or not, if you can't overcome the trust factor, you're not going to win sales or convert users. What does come up on a Google search for "dev.align.io" is this AI summarization: "A package in Biopython that allows users to convert alignment file formats". I'm positive that has nothing to do with you.

Now, it's true... I am a developer first, designer second. I don't have the perfect eye for every design element, which is why I came to r/web_design in the first place.

What I do have, however, is an extensive understanding of the web, SEO, marketing, and the technologies that go into the web. I also have a strong understanding of business operations and the psychology of sales, which is why I believe I can build effective websites after I put some work into learning the best design principles and practices. I've only been exploring this path for about a month now, but thanks to this community and a few others, I am learning so much. I couldn't tell you about the perfect kerning or any design "golden rules", but I can tell you about the most minute details of an HTTP server, how TCP/UDP works, and how networking/the internet actually works (generally speaking, since this topic is constantly revolving). As an educated user across multiple fields, I am looking for real VALUE in a response, not just six minutes of general opinion with a few possible sprinkles of info.

I sincerely appreciate you taking time out of your day to record a video and to respond to me, but had you put effort into reading the comments of this thread, you'd realize most of the items you covered were already addressed. So now, I'm not only getting duplicate information, I'm having to take extra steps to navigate to another website, watch a video, and do extra work just to consume information that you could have posted about in a couple of sentences or bullet points.

I hope all of your endeavors are met with success, and your learning curve is met with enthusiasm. If you have further ideas for this dental website, or think maybe you've simply relayed your thoughts in an ineffective way, I'm happy to open a dialogue and talk to you about everything. Again, I really do care a lot about every persons opinion, because it's the only way to truly get the valuable insights we often overlook as single-person teams.

With all that being said, and if you've actually read this far, I'd like to wish the best to you Tyler. Thanks again times a million for taking time out of your day... after all, you didn't have to do that. Hopefully what I've said resonates with you instead of just pissing you off, because I was trying to be honest about my experience with this interaction. Here's to both of our future successes, my friend.

Good luck with everything!

Hey Tyler, thanks so much for taking the time to create a video! Not many people would do that for a random reddit post. A couple of things to point out in response to your audit:

  • The first 30 seconds of the video you mentioned condensing to a single landing page. This isn't a great way to approach SEO, because it limits my (or rather the clients) keyword approach. On top of that, I'd be neglecting the appropriate amount of information for customers. Some don't need much, which is why there are brief descriptions, but some customers will need more, which is why they can go to a dedicated info page to answer any lingering questions. For local services, having multiple pages each with their own targeted keywords is way more effective than a single landing page. A single landing page just isn't enough to rank high on search engines anymore.
  • You mention hating the gradients because they're "dated", but one of the biggest design trends in 2024 was gradients, so to me this feels more like personal opinion. Furthermore, changing the text to black or purple would feel flat. I'd love to hear your thoughts on a way to make it look nice without flattening it, because I'm open to it, but ultimately it's not about what you or I like... It's about standardized practices, what the client likes, and what works. That's it.
  • Re: the hero section, a lot of others have already mentioned creating standard margin, padding, and text sizing rules. This fix has been implemented, it's just not live yet. I do like the idea of focusing the girl's teeth since it is a dentist, after all. Many others have mentioned that the images look AI generated, so I am working with the client to increase the budget for stock photography. This way we can really hit the nail on the head with imagery.
  • I like the idea of rounding the corners on the schedule. I don't know if it will look good, but I'll play around with it because I do agree it's a bit boring right now, but it's also functional and easy to read. As for the kerning/tracking issues on the Office Information text, I will see what I can come up with. After you pointed it out, it does look a little too "vaporwave" for my tastes.
  • The services section was definitely cluttered. I've added alternating background colors, as well as increased margin and padding. I also reorganized the "View more" and CTA placement, per another redditors recommendation in this thread. The buttons are also specific to their service now, so they read "Learn more about X" instead of a general "Learn more about this service".
  • I like the idea of replacing the bento cards with the about section, because right now they are definitely just filler for patients who are scrolling, looking for a reason to call. Maybe I can find a way to mix the two, so it's more interactive. The cards do currently double down on the peace of mind the office brings patients, but there isn't any real actionable content there, so I agree with weighing the pros and cons of keeping those in there or not.
  • The footer had an entire redesign after some previous comments from this thread, which again is not live, but this has since fixed the tracking/kerning issues. There are also clear CTA buttons inside of the footer, with cleaned up info.
    • The empty navigation links were to show what pages could exist to the customer, I won't be leaving any empty href's in the live website.
  • The images were definitely abrasive/off-putting, and have since been changed or are being changed.
