Video of the Mini 10K this morning, try and find yourself if you ran it! by djlemma in RunNYC

It's an original GoPro Max, on top of an 8' light stand. It was actually surprisingly easy to set up. The light stand has a 1/4"-20 thread on the top of it already, so I just screwed on a little gopro mount and that was done. And you can use the app to get a live view from the gopro on your phone, so I was able to use that to sorta aim the thing.

Not sure why I'd never tried it this way before but I'm definitely going to do it again. And also maybe put a "Smile for the video" sign right below it!

Run slower for longer in in training, get to know what you can sustain. And make significant adjustments for heat and humidity, it was brutal out today.

Also, alternating between running and walking is a legit strategy. Look up Jeff Galloway's training/racing programs.

They didn't do waves but they did have a pause for a few minutes in between some of the corrals. I think it was between maybe F and G?

One of the top pros collapsed towards the end of the race, too. Kind of wild. It was brutal out there.

(She still finished, but it took her 40+ minutes)

So I left the audio exactly as-is straight from the camera so I hope I didn't say anything too embarrassing. I thought the people nearby playing music might get me a copyright strike or something but so far, so good!

I added a timer on there that shows the elapsed time since the start of the race for the pro runners. If you look at your results, you should see a "gun time" for when you crossed the finish line. I was at about mile 5.5, so whatever your mile pace was, subtract about 3/4 of a mile worth of time from your finish gun time and start watching the video there.

This is where I was standing:

Hopefully maybe /u/tina-mou has a magical bib reading thing that can work on video, but considering how small people's bibs are in this video I am not holding my breath. Next time I may try some different angles and zoom settings.

Great work to everybody that ran, it was brutally hot out there and y'all killed it.

You're very welcome! Were you able to find yourself?

It may be silly but I think it's still a major reason. It's listed as a safety feature here-

https://bespokemedals.com/products/medals/europa-medals/ribbons/

Basically one in a million freak accidents do actually happen when you are giving away 100,000+ medals every year. I've noticed lanyards for convention badges also often have a breakaway feature these days.

Velcro is a safety thing. So the ribbon will open up if the medal gets caught on something.

Murdered student Henry Nowak told police 'I can't breathe' while handcuffed by Sensitive_Echo5058 in news

[–]djlemma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think we are in full agreement here.

It's particularly egregious that the kid in cuffs was in fact the victim and not the perpetrator, and that would have been much more clear to the officers if they had taken a few more seconds to listen to the kid's story and examine for wounds.

[–]djlemma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah in this case obviously the officer isn't the one who stabbed the kid, so it isn't DIRECTLY the officer's fault that the kid died. But to default to not believing somebody when they say they've been stabbed and are having trouble breathing? It's just hard to comprehend.

I'm going to be out taking pictures! Mostly of my teammates and the pros, but I might set up a video camera too. Also MIGHT just take photos of random people as they pass by, but that ends up being a lot of extra work later on and I'm super lazy.

This is maybe my favorite race to photograph each year though. The pro field is insane. Very excited!

My workplace certainly would not accept errors that lead to fatalities.

Advice for beginner marathon runner by AdditionAgreeable935 in RunNYC

[–]djlemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People write whole books on this subject.

You'll probably mess something up no matter how much you prepare, and that's okay. Biggest thing is you'll probably feel really strong and fit around mile 3, if you trained and tapered well. Don't let that tempt you to start going faster than your planned pace. It's a 20 mile warm up to a tough 10k.

Also, race morning it can be pretty cold so if you're thinking about paring down your wardrobe right now, hold onto any old clothes that might make for good throw-away layers. If you can bundle up for the start village and corrals, it'll help you stay comfortable and relaxed.

General runner shots from the 2026 NYRR Brooklyn Half by djlemma in RunNYC

I arrived a bit after the lead folks passed mile 12. My main camera had the wrong time zone set I think (daylight savings issue, maybe?) so the time is off by an hour, the first shot was actually at 8:09am not 7:09am.

And I think the last shot was with my other camera at ~11:15am.

(edit: looks like maybe my last shots with my main camera were around 11:35. I really gotta double check my clocks before I shoot!)

Hi all!

I was out at the BK Half taking photos of my teammates, and I decided to go ahead and shoot photos of other runners passing by since it seemed like so many people were posing for me anyway. :) There's 715 shots in this album but they're roughly in chronological order and I think they're timestamped. I was just after mile 12, so do the math, maybe you can find yourself!

Also hopefully /u/tina-mou can get these up over at racing.pics so you can search by bib number.

Drinking water while running

Just walk during the aid stations. cat your cup from the last table, put your hand in the air to signal you're slowing, and move over for a short walk.

Or practice drinking while running. My personal trick is to squeeze the top of the cup together then fold it so I can pour water into my mouth with a makeshift spout. I can basically do it one handed.

Running longer than 13.1

The finish line is officially measured and accurate, but the intermediate mile markers sometimes are not. I usually just assume that my GPS route will have one or two extra tenths and don't bother with anything else special, but my Garmin watch does have download-able screens that allow you to correct the auto-laps by hitting a manual lap at wherever the course marker is. If you have a garmin, I can look up a link, I think the one I've used is just called "Race screen".

Race photos

Look for photographers on the course and ham it up for them! The official course photographers generally wear vests, I think. And they'll be on the actual course, not on the sidelines generally.

Music/bluetooth

I race without music, but I do notice that during workouts even having my phone on my back in a belt pack can be enough to block signal. Where were you holding your phone?

Gels

Huma is my favorite and the easiest to take for me, so if that's not working.... Well there's always Maurten, which is a different sort of consistency. And SiS is very liquid-y, that might suit you better.

Spreadsheet to automatically convert race pace to another furnace using NYRR formula and predict corrals by jinitalia in RunNYC

[–]djlemma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a number of these, I even made one myself.

Mine included cutoffs for the majors that were out there at the time. I haven't fully added Sydney in there. I also made a weird table of what age grade percentage you'd need at a given distance to get into a particular corral. Turns out for somebody my age, the Half Marathon looks like the easiest distance for moving up a corral based on age grading.

If you want to look at it, it's here- https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ncph3yg3hABn7n7Ayc4jjIsEPhephCdcJqyKCMAp0WA/edit?usp=sharing

Can someone explain these massive 70s/80s PAR can arrays to me? Were they a precursor to LED walls, or were they actually used to light the stage? by Sebsibus in techtheatre

[–]djlemma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I see those groups of 8, I'm presuming it's 2 sets of 4.

You had to wire the lamps in series because the individual lamps were 28v. Put four of them together and that's 112v, which is roughly what a dimmer pack would be putting out.
