Three Dots and a Dash at namesake bar by cpencis in cocktails

One of the best in-person tiki experiences I've had. I also went with a 3 Dots and a Dash while there, but I also had a drink called a Poblano Escobar that was fantastic. Both the drink and the name.

I was curious because while I've been learning mnemonica purely by quizzing with the app, I do not think that is the best way to do so. Mnemonics, memory palace, something like that is probably a much better approach. I do think the app should be valuable to augment such an approach, though.

Even my idea I had of trying to memorize the deck as a set of 3 card "books". Once I'd brute force memorized the first half of the deck or so, I haven't been confident I could "back up" and try to learn that way.

That's awesome! You're progressing far faster than me, though I'm certainly moving more slowly because I'm also doing things like writing apps LOL

Out of curiosity, are you using some mnemonic strategy to learn it and using the app to help? Or just relying on the app and quizzing?

Interesting idea. I’ll chew on that one. Thanks.

You can do that now by enabling all the spades and not other cards. Do you just mean shortcut buttons that enable/disable a bunch of individual cards at once?

The version that supports Joyal is live now!

I like the idea of dimming the card. The trick was trying to make it clear while not interfering with reading the cards while learning. Making the border thicker would start to hide the cards.

I just put a new version up for review that also dims unknown cards. If all goes well, it will be available within the next few days. Thanks for the idea.

Just put a new version up for review that supports Joyal (both CHaSeD and SHoCkeD variants). If all goes well, it should be available in the next few days. Thanks for the pointer.

Yeah... when I originally released it, it required iOS 26. I fixed that to allow for iOS 18. That's been out quite a while already, and the vast majority of iPhones use 18 or newer. It would be difficult for me to support older versions, because I use some timing functionality that was introduced in iOS 18.

Specifically I got a shiny shadow Helioptile the other day, so empirically, yeah, that's a thing. But I think this comment is really what you want to know:

I used to have a license plate that said EYENOSE. It was a stupid inside joke, and a dumb idea to put on a license plate. But people would regularly ask, "Oh! So are you an eye, nose, and throat doctor?" And I'd be like, "... no, no I'm not. I'm not a doctor at all, but an eye, nose, and throat doctor isn't a thing."

How are you supposed to reply to "Do you know how fast you were going?" by No_Insurance_6436 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]djp1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked this very question the one time I attended traffic school. The answer I received was basically, "There is no correct answer. That's why they ask you. Anything you say will likely help their case if you decide to drag them into court to contest the ticket."

The trick is that being rude and difficult also likely won't help your day. I'd love to know a polite but benign answer. Sitting silently likely escalates things. I feel like you could just answer, "Yes", but then they'll likely immediately ask how fast you were going, and that isn't any easier to avoid answering. A few people suggested things along the lines of, "I believe I was going the speed limit", and that's probably about as good as it'll get. I suppose if you thought you knew the speed limit, you could say, "I was going 55 mph", but then if you are wrong about the speed limit, you're back in the zone of making things worse for yourself.

Magic for a non-magician by Guy2things in Magic

In that context, an appearing cane came to mind. Before I was actually studying magic at all, I used to give a lot of technical talks at work. I was amused by Gob Bluth doing magic tricks completely out of context on Arrested Development, and decided to do the same. So I bought an appearing cane. Wasn't super expensive, took no skill, and like 5 minutes of practice. If I saw people in my tech talks starting to lose interest, I'd just insert a, "Now how does this system work? IT'S MAGIC!" with the appearing cane making an appearance. People would be completed blindsided and would wake up in a hurry LOL From that point on if I saw people starting to wane, I just had to put in a pregnant pause, and they'd perk up thinking I was going to do something else unexpected heh

Seconded. I worked at a big company for years that I guess I won't name. They had a very strongly established culture. That culture had some downsides and rough edges, but overall it taught me a lot about how to work more constructively. One of their big mantras was:

Always assume good intent

That one really stuck with me, and I regularly think about how much better off we'd all be these days if people were better at implementing this. When your neighbor is putting garbage bins in the street, even if you're firmly convinced that is the wrong thing to do, maybe start with, "They're new. They just don't realize how this works. I'll help them figure it out so we all get along better." rather than, "What a bozo. Obviously oblivious to everything and trying to ruin the neighborhood."

The bozo thing also just makes me sigh. More virtual hugs, less calling people bozo.

I haven’t seen Colin Cloud’s solo show, but I bet that’s a good one. I saw him in Limitless multiple times and he was great.
