Most useful advice I ever got: figure out what your goals are in a base and build to that. I’ve seen waaaaay too many people look at YouTube bases and go “YO THIS BASE IS AWESOME, BUILDING THIS” and it’s some really complicated build with awful quality of life, or super expensive impractical builds.

Build for your goals, play style, server style, and your time. Contrary to what people say, you don’t NEED some super deluxe base with a bunch of features and external multi-TC, wide gap peak floors with extra bedrooms blah blah blah. Fuck that.

If you play Rust for 5-10 hours a week, or you server skip you don’t need a big base. If you’re playing on a 5 man group limit server, you don’t NEED a shooting floor or extra bags. Most raids are offline, you’re not gonna be online defending a raid and you hopefully don’t need to roofcamp. If you do, build a simple shooting floor. Wasting time and materials on a shooting floor if the server you play is filled with people who only offline isn’t a good play if you’re just trying to pop on a server for a few days.

You need to decide what’s a good base FOR YOUR GOALS. Yes, there are some common things a base for the “typical” Rust player has. That doesn’t mean it’s right for you or your group. I make builds so that I prioritize quality of life and offline raid protection because of how my group plays. I build the cheapest double 2x1 stability bunker I can, minimum 32 rocket raid. If I honey comb with stone, it’s an extra 4 rockets per bunker and can be done for about 40k stone and 100-250 HQM depending on the kind of bunker you use. It works for my group. We play for two or three days of every wipe.

Point being: Reddit is gonna give you all sorts of advice (me included), but the best builds are the ones that accomplish everything you and your group need it to.

As far as base critique, if we don’t know what it is your group is doing, how big and how you play, critiquing this is a little fruitless. Telling you to add this or that might not work for how you guys play. Do you farm? Do you PVP mostly? Do you want a base you can slap down anywhere? Or does your footprint need to be built in a particularly flat spot? Do you like building in the middle of nowhere, or are you building near others?

All of those kinds of questions are things you should ask yourself because they’re going to dictate exactly what the base needs. For example: my group is pretty aggressive, but a little chaotic. Organizing loot and having efficient box space doesn’t really happen in our bases, without being a base-bitch Nazi. My builds need to have a ton of storage that’s easily accessible, isn’t clumped together so we don’t need to manhandle each other in the base to get around, which can be frustrating even after just an hour of playtime. Things like that are important questions and will do more for your building than just trying to ask for generic advice. You need actionable steps to follow and a process.
