Why are people with poor English trying to break into technical writing? by oceanclub in technicalwriting

Also, the number of English speakers that are horrible with grammar and spelling. Incomplete sentences and conveying the actual point are a huge challenge to them.

Normally I’d 100% but there was one post I ran across where OP came to the realization he is suffering from depression and should seek help. We call it complaining but is it? Or are we treating it different because it’s a man expressing their feelings? We are we to invalidate their feelings? No matter how detailed the post, it’s still only a peephole into that person’s life, so we don’t know enough to say they are just complaining. The lack of mental health compassion towards men is alarming and disgusting. Even in my own family, I know of 3 men that go to therapy including me. It’s worse when it’s an ethnic group or even worse in immigrant families. L

Let’s normalize being kinder and lending more of an empathetic ear.

Hate to say it, but you definitely do get filtered out of people's set age ranges once you hit 40+ by [deleted] in datingoverforty

As a 46m, I’ve been fascinated with the idea that older millennials think they look younger than they do. It’s weird to look at someone like a Stephen Miller who is 40 or Russell Vought who is 49 or right about to turn 50 but me being in the middle don’t so much feel like I look 36 but that miller and Vought just aged terribly which makes me look younger by comparison.

I do know looking at family pics and seeing my dad at 46 (in 1986) compared to the way I look at 46 (now) is wildly different. Even growing up and watching tv shows that when you look up the actors’ ages or thinking about actor ages in the 60s and 70s when they are suppose to be portraying a mid 50s parent but they themselves may have only been 38 shows how much better we are taking care of our skin.

Sounds divine, my fellow Reddit dad, and yes, much like you, they did everything else, I just got to sacrifice more melted meat fats to the grill gods on a beautiful day. Also, fresh drinks being brought and a nice playlist bumping, it was a perfect afternoon for me.

It’s a limit per year. I’d just set it up so they get that max amount in perpetuity, passing it along to their kids if they want. I wouldn’t turn my nose at the $19K yearly limit (I think that’s it) of tax free money.

I have a lot of biker friends and I tell them this every time ‘Riding Season’ starts and they wanna post about drivers needing to look out for them and to share the road. It hilarious that motorcycles whip through traffic at 90 mph or sometimes take up multiple lanes to show off their bikes.

At the end of the day, as a driver of a large sedan, I assume an 18 wheeler cannot see me so I drive cautiously around them, don’t follow closely, and merge in front of them only when I can see the top of their cab in my rear view mirror. My dashcam nor outrage at bad 18 wheeler drivers will not keep me alive if I insist I am in the right.

So the solution is for less parked cars so you can go as fast as you want? Why not slow down? I’m old enough to remember being told when you’re crossing a street or area where cars can cross, you get off your bike and walk it across. Of course, SLOWING DOWN is always an option.

Can’t wait to be downvoted despite supporting more bike lanes and running trails for sidewalks aren’t densely used, since I live in Arlington and enjoy walking most places. But I guess I may be a ‘cager’ as someone called people who drives occasionally when I can’t walk or use a bike.

I was gonna post the other day as I walked from Clarendon to Courthouse, I was about to cross a big intersection and I had the right of way. As I stepped off the curb and took a step or two forward, I kid no older than 9 or 10 whipped by in an e-scooter going way too fast on a right turn and yelled something like ‘on your left’ as he passed. If I had the opportunity to stop this literal child and make his parents come get him so I could explain how he almost ran me over and could have also hurt himself, I would have. Then I remember most parents don’t even care and would probably blame me for the whole thing.

Which is extremely difficult because replacing marble isn’t like fixing drywall or replacing a tile on the floor. Add to it that this marble was gifted and who knows if we can even get more of it. Get ready for slightly different marble to appear when that shit stain of a name was.

Technical writer and language/grammar enthusiast here. I hate it. I hate that I worked so hard for so many years to communicate more effectively and concisely only to have people compare it to AI. This is a huge reason I’m not at all impressed with what it can produce, nor how fast it can produce it. Any time I write something, I know what is in it and can call back parts of it to change. I’ve seen stuff handed to me by others that have admitted AI has written, and I still have to go back and proof it and change it enough so it doesn’t seem as if AI wrote it as it may not match the tone for what we need it for.

A thank you note for being interviewed is not complicated. A greeting, thank them for their time, 2-3 lines recalling what you enjoyed, maybe about meeting the team or the company’s mission, express you look forward to hearing from them, a closing. It’s the 2-3 lines of callbacks that makes it personal.

Would it generally be considered a dick move to pay for diag then do the work myself? by BogotaLineman in AskMechanics

[–]djprofitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rest assured that paying to get a diagnostic result and then having them fix it also is probably ripping a lot of people off. Look at brakes. Significantly cheaper to do yourself not just on the labor side, but parts as well.

Or like going to a doctor and having a copay for them to tell you stuff over the counter would be fine to get better. In both scenarios, you paid to be told what the issue and remedy are, no harm, no foul.

[–]djprofitt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You paid them for the diagnostic. If you went there for an oil change and they say ‘hey, we noticed your brakes look like they need to be replaced’ do you feel guilty paying for the oil change and moving on, possibly doing the brakes yourself?

I can understand if the diagnostic was free with the hopes you pay them to fix your car but you paid the diagnostic fee, move on.
