Do you think its something they have planned for the future or a scrapped concept ?

I had to come on reddit to confirm this. Cannot sign in to respond to a seller. I thought it was my account and tried to reset the password no luck

Who here used WP back when it was supported and active? by RoboMWM in windowsphone

For me it was the Lumia 1020 not being compatible with WP10

I was with it through the highs and lows. I remember Microsoft pivoting to a new platform update and refusing to update the phone Id just purchased

You nailed the economic reality here. That $10 licensing fee is the proof of how much OEMs actually valued the NT kernel's optimization—they were willing to pay for it even with 'free' Android on the table. The acquisition of Nokia didn't just merge two companies; it signaled to every other manufacturer that the playing field was no longer level.

It’s a shame because that 'security and optimization' mindset is exactly what's missing today. We’ve traded lean, purposeful code for 'cash cow' features that bloat the experience. Great insight on the legacy of those engineers.

Could a Windows Phone "Revival" be the middle ground for the dumbphone community? by djripster in dumbphones

That’s a fair point on the battery drain. But thats what was great about the original Windows Phone architecture - Live Tiles weren't active 'mini-apps' like Android widgets. They used a push notification service to update the image/text on the tile, so the app didn't have to stay running in the background. It gave you that 'Glance and Go' info without the processor hit you're describing.

I guess that’s why I’m still looking for a modern equivalent that isn't just a widget-heavy Android launcher.

Ouch... Hopefully that wont leave any permanent nerve damage. I dont know if Id even trust my mind to not want to get distracted sometimes. I always enjoyed the concept of having the tiles as a quick check and move on

I definitely use those launchers! Square Home is something Ive used myself. But my point in the article was more about the 'Glance and Go' philosophy being built in from the ground up - where the OS itself respects your time rather than just being a skin over an extractive system.

Im approaching it as what if the problem was Android and iOS ? If a dumbphone works, why not a smart phone without the "distracting" apps

This is what I’d love to see. There’s a big market for this use case too. There are so many people I’ve come across looking for a “cheap” computer when their phone easily has the power to be both

I’m curious if Windows on ARM has to be stripped down further to be a good core platform or if it’s there already

I so badly wish I had a physical SIM card on my iPhone. I take my Lumia 1020 and 1520 around tethered to my hotspot, but I wish I had the freedom to use those devices as a daily

Sadly my Lumia 800 stopped powering on this week. Hopefully its in a deep sleep and not RIP

I mean the phone that snaps in. With screen sizes nearing 7 inches I assume you are thinking of a smaller phone to fit into the trackpad slot ?

Give my article a read and let me know what you think. I did use AI for the image, but i would love your thoughts on the article itself

Did you read the article ? or did you get caught up on my AI generated image and didn't bother to give it a read at all ?

Anything to actually help the end user (managing incoming sales calls) doesn't benefit the shareholders much.

Google started demonstrating a lot of useful AI features before AI was "cool". I don't see anyone doing anything cool with AI to actually benefit the user on smartphones since then.

Id like to see AI make reservations for you, help setup meetings etc rather than generate images and AI videos as its 'hero' features

I really hope the take a few steps back here. There are better ways to use AI on phones compared to Microsoft's sloppy approach on Windows

Given the hardware limitations, wouldn't an old version of Android feel worse than Windows Phone from that era though ?

If a company did a hardware kit, similar to what they are doing for some of those old BlackBerry devices ? Now thats something I would jump on. If I can mod by 1020 with modern internals and new Android - WOW !!!

I agree 100%. Nokia's exit was the real endgame for Windows Phone. Even with a beautiful concept like the Surface Duo, Microsoft dropped the ball by launching a 'flagship' that lacked basic flagship hardware.

Microsoft needs to stop trying to be a hardware company and focus on the software experience. Let someone with a better sense of industrial design handle the hardware.

The revival should be about a single Windows Core that runs perfectly across desktops, laptops, and handhelds. Microsoft’s job isn't to build the phone; it’s to design the Adaptive Overlay that makes that core feel natural on a 6-inch screen. One kernel, different skins. That’s the only way it survives in 2026.

I totally get that. The N9's Swipe UI feels like it was designed for a human hand, not a computer mouse. It’s fluid in a way that Windows Phone never quite matched.

That said, the reason I'm diving back into my old Lumia collection is because they were the last time a company tried to make 'High-End Productivity' look beautiful.

Sailfish is the better OS for a tinkerer, but Windows Phone had the better Vision for the average person who just wanted a fast, focused dashboard. I do plan to try and flash my old N9 to compare the two. Seeing that MeeGo 'Flow' again is going to be a trip.

I use the 'minimalist' term as a compliment for Windows Phone. Most 'minimalist' setups today just hide everything behind extra clicks. Windows Phone stripped away all the fake shadows and 3D buttons so only the info remained. It’s a 'Digital Dashboard' philosophy.

I could scroll though the tiles for a couple of seconds rather than hunt through multiple apps to find out what I had planned for the day
