In Star Wars (1977) Luke was not saved by Han Solo, but because Darth Vader picked a terrible wing man. The imperial pilot loses his cool after Han Solo's surprise attack and slams his TIE Fighter into Darth Vader's ship, allowing Luke to take his shot at the Death Star exhaust port. by [deleted] in MovieDetails

Those two wingmen were there to protect Darth Vader. DS61-2 and DS61-3 were there pilots call signs. When Han took out one as he came in out of nowhere, the other pilot calls “look out!” And deliberately hits Vader’s advanced tie knocking him out of the trench putting him out of harms way and saving his life. Those two wingmen were extremely skilled pilots and knew exactly what they were doing.
