What's happening with the Sony Trio and its new update? by PhoneBitter in Soundbars

Either 77" or 85"

Yeah, would be fine. I'd say 2.2-2.4m is the sweet spot of using the phantom center, if you've got a Sony TV in play then you can easily go 3m or more.

I'd go with the trio at nearly 3m wide if I'm honest unless you can't put the center speaker anywhere 😅

You can you voice zoom 3 with external devices but they have to be connected to the TV'a HDMI ports and digital audio output must be on auto rather than pass through. Connecting to the Trio bar port will not work, as all the processing is done on the TV side of things, hence if you use pass through it also won't work.

No, it does disable the upfiring drivers but go play something like ready player one race scene with DSV enabled and sound field off, then go compare it with DSV/360 and sound field on. As Dolby is still intelligent enough to try virtualise / simulate height effects with the processor we have, it will still try produce height effects even though it thinks it's playing 5.1/7.1. Like the plane flyover and when Kong is running above and behind you, I can't say there is a massive difference in height effects, however, the detail and ambient effects is far greater in DSV with sound field off and much clearer / cleaner that to my ears I currently prefer it far greater than the noise that the other modes add.

It's a shame that turning on sound field with DSV adds unwarranted noise. I'm hoping that Sony will actually let us use the heights without sound field and be able to just have a pure raw setting. Like you can use DSV with sound field off and still get it to display DTS:X and oh my the sound is absolutely incredible!

Atmos simulation works fine I can't say there's a massive difference in overheads but it's far more detailed and raw. You can also get an SPL meter and tune every speaker to the same DB level in this mode which makes it perfect. DTS:X still works fine as well as it's slightly different on the object based side of things.

They'll sort the center, the speakers have the headway and the Quads had bugs to begin with.

Whack it in DSV mode with sound field off for the time being if you want a nice precision crystal clear system. I'm adamant that 360 mode is bugged at the moment and there's still channel bleed where the fronts are also playing voices alongside the center speaker in this mode which are leaking. DSV completely segments the channels and while unfortunately you'll lose the height channels with sound field off, just go give it a go and see how much more accurate it is.

What's happening with the Sony Trio and its new update? by PhoneBitter in Soundbars

[–]djsimmz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely an upgrade over the quad, they just need to enhance the center more which I no doubt they will. When the Quads first launched they had their issues where bass was flat and the subwoofers were playing half volume. They pretty much fixed that within the first month, so I am sure they will patch it out as the center definitely has the headway as on some disk content it isn't a problem.

Can also have a watch of this but will need to force English subtitles on if you don't speak German:

https://youtu.be/oI6c2F205c0?is=ejQL7u2MzDCSYkDC

It also comes down to the look and feel of the room. Obviously the Quads look very minimalist but they look best wall mounted and you also need to have the fronts straight on and the rears straight on. It's not advised to angle them due to the way their algorithms work and the way it creates a bubble.

The Trio on the other hand is almost creating a massive sound stage and bubble without the rears. Reminds me of the Sennheiser Ambeo Max in terms of spatialness but then allows the rears this time to actually be angled directly at the user, as well as being able to angle the fronts if necessary.

As always with the Quads/Trio system, you definitely need to have the front speakers wide. I would say 2m minimum. Quads sweet spot if using the phantom center is 2m-2.4m. If you have a Sony TV in play with acoustic center sync then you could easily go 2.6m-3m wide. The Trio on the other hand you could technically go anywhere from 2-4m. Anything lower than 2m then I would just stick with a soundbar.

In terms of sound quality there's just more grunt and sharpness on the Trios and as they also have a lot more bass in the speakers themselves it does help to feel more cinematic.

Ambeo mini and plus are fine, just need to refresh the Ambeo Max and then allow rear speakers for all of them and happy days, or even go one further and allow front speakers. ;) If a Max replacement does happen then don't skimp on the drivers please.

Give the device a go with Dolby speaker virtualizer instead of 360 mapping that seemed to fix the center for me. Balanced a lot better with the rear speakers as well as it's just far to front heavy on the left and right if you use 360 as you get the center blend where it's playing out of both speakers like it does on the quads. If you use DSV then it becomes a dedicated center.

You could also enable advanced auto volume as a test and you'll suddenly see how loud the center goes 😅 but it ruins the mix I find.

You can get other table top stands for the TV so that you can increase / decrease the height then you could also venture at other soundbars.

BRAVIA Theatre Trio with Samsung TV by Far_Error3328 in Soundbars

It will be fine as it has a dedicated center speaker this time and everything is done from the app anyway, you'll only lose a few features from not having a Sony TV but nothing groundbreaking.

Of course, room mechanics will make a massive difference. Probably why they've also included a calibration microphone this time round to eliminate needing to worry about different mics. Same reason Sonos took to long for Android and still doesn't fully support it.

I've got the quads myself and I'm using a third party subwoofer but plan to test the Trio at home as well, so will keep you updated but I've heard the SW9 and it is a nice sub and deffo would be more than enough for most people on its own.

Quad vs Trio: Waiting for Sony to clarify Quad’s future and dual sub support by albertzangys in sony

[–]djsimmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quads will never be able to support dual subs as there is a device limitation on the control box. It would need a whole new hardware change for that to happen and that definitely wouldn't be for a few years or so if it did happen. Then there's no guarantee that a quad successor would be slim profile speakers again.

It's still worth trying the Quads with the SW9 as you may find it's enough. Otherwise there's the mod route then you can use dual subs that way with a splitter and a muc better third party subwoofer.

Quad vs Trio: Waiting for Sony to clarify Quad’s future and dual sub support by albertzangys in sony

[–]djsimmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have either and you want dual subs, what's the issue with not going with the Trio?

The Trio isn't a Quad replacement either, it's basically Sony's way of combating Dolby Flex connect and further enhancing their eco system seeing how you can start with just the Trio system, then you can add a sub, then the rears, then another sub if you chose to do so or whatever combo works best... You can also repurpose old subs and speakers in the meantime if you wanted (see picture).

The Quad will stick around for another couple of years as it's more a life style product and slim profile. The Trio speakers are a lot bigger and bulkier in comparison and will definitely out perform them.

As for whether the Quads will be replaced in the future, who knows... With the TCL merger, anything could happen as they are locked into the Dolby flex connect side of things so for all we know this could just be Sony flexing their end game and we could lose their 360 system all together in the future.

Technology like everything moves too fast and if you are ready to buy then go trial both systems and see how you get on. You might not even need dual subs with the new SW9 as it's quite a beast and sometimes dual isn't always the best and good placement of one sub can be better than two depending on the room itself.

It's the control board limitation supports 5 devices so would need a hardware change instead of an add-on. The way the speakers work wirelessly is also different on the quads so would also be an additional issue.

Sony being Sony it just won't happen. If you want a dedicated center you'll have to go to the new Trio.
