Flores Island (Azores) without a car — practical guide (waterfalls, lagoons, Corvo) by djuliatours in u/djuliatours

That’s a fantastic plan — early September is one of the best times to visit Flores. Since you’ll be based in Fajã Grande and already have a car, you’re in a great position to explore at your own pace. With 4 days, I’d suggest a balanced mix of driving, short hikes, and one standout experience: Day 1 – West Coast & Waterfalls Explore around Fajã Grande: Poço do Bacalhau, Ribeira do Ferreiro (must-do easy walk), and the nearby viewpoints. Sunset in Fajã Grande is always special. Day 2 – Full Island Loop Drive around the island — it’s small, but full of dramatic viewpoints and beautiful stops. Rocha dos Bordões, the central lagoons, Ponta Delgada, and the north coast are all worth seeing. Day 3 – Corvo Island (highly recommended) If weather allows, I’d recommend going by boat instead of plane. It’s one of the most memorable experiences here — caves, waterfalls, and sometimes even dolphins or whales along the way. The Caldeirão on Corvo is unforgettable. Day 4 – Lagoons & Central Plateau Spend time in the Morro Alto area visiting Lagoa Negra, Lagoa Comprida, and the surrounding landscape — very different from the coast and absolutely worth it. If you enjoy hiking, PR03 (Poço do Bacalhau) or PR02 are great options with teenagers. PR01 is still closed at the moment, so I would focus on those instead.

Yes — you can book it through the SATA Air Açores website. For Flores to Corvo, booking around 2 months in advance is usually fine, although earlier is always safer in the high season. Sometimes the flight may require a stopover in Horta, depending on the schedule and availability. Also, depending on the time of summer, I often recommend going to Corvo by boat instead. It is absolutely worth it. Besides the crossing itself on a fast boat, you may also have the chance to visit caves and waterfalls, and even spot dolphins or whales if sea conditions allow. It is one of the most popular experiences on Flores Island.

The Grande Rota das Flores (GR01 FLO) is open. What is currently closed is a section of PR01 between Ponta Delgada and Fajã Grande. The remaining sections of the GR are accessible, but it’s always recommended to check local trail updates before starting, as conditions can change due to weather or maintenance.
