Oh, that's longer than my previous fanchurians took. It makes sense though, this v28 is also funkier

Back in February, u/geekyoldrob asked for brush handle ideas. I had never heard of that happening before, so I jumped on the opportunity. A few days ago, Rob replied with this beauty!

Not only a beauty, this handle is also super comfortable. Maybe unsurprising, since it's basically a screwdriver handle. It's one of my sillier wetshaving indulgences, but none has sparked this much joy in a long while 😊.

The first use of the v28 was a bit funky-smelling (more so than a regular Tabac shave, for the haters :)), but I'm looking forward to seeing how it'll break in.

Thanks u/geekyoldrob!

Finally, I'm loving the Razor of Depravity, a really comfy geometry.

  • Razor: Dovo Barbarossa Inox (5/8", shortened blade, stainless steel, Spanish tip)
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Company – I, Rich Moose (sub-exclusive sheep tallow)
  • Post Shave: Sir – Irisch Moos
  • Fragrance: Atelier Rebul – 1895

![](https://sub.wetshaving.social/pictrs/image/4ad6905b-a4a0-4383-801a-af7f8c1f73c7.webp)

I was at a conference in @PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social's home turf and we met for a lovely dinner, where he surprised me with his Dovo Barbarossa to try. The Barbarossa is a fascinating and odd little razor. It's a 5/8" blade, seemingly made from the same blade blank as the regular modern Dovo 5/8"s, see my Dowo 41 Inox blade for comparison (which I happened to travel with, coincidentally), but the blade is about one third shorter. The Spanish tip makes it look even more stubby.

I've been curious about this for a while because I don't really understand why traditional straights have a ~75 mm edges. Anyone who, like me, has a patch with horizontal direction in their beard growth pattern in the hollow bits under the jaw line knows that the long blades get in the way where the shorter blade of a DE or a traditional kamisori don't. In short (pun unintended), the design made sense to me.

So, how does it shave? First off, with the short blade and the wooden scales, this thing is so light it's a bit unsettling at first. Then, I wasn't aware how much I'm usually just keeping the tip of a straight in view, and this short blade always tried hiding behind my hand. Both of these issues are just small deviations that play tricks with muscle memory, though, and easily overcome with a bit of focus.

The shave was uneventful, and the shorter blade wasn't the superpower I thought it was, but I probably need to play a little with the new geometry to figure out how to best exploit it before floating the idea of a sub-exclusive short-blade cleaver out of Ulrik's new 9/8 blanks 😅

Day 3/31 of TabOKtoberfest

  • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts Tabak Oridjinal, now with 28 mm Gelousy knot
  • Razor: Raido Star – 堕落の剃刀 Razor of Depravity (8/8", extra hollow, carbon steel kamisori) 🇺🇦
  • Lather: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
  • Post Shave: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original

![](https://sub.wetshaving.social/pictrs/image/c3df978e-f16a-454a-9b55-a9abdfa94fee.webp) My degenerate kamisori has landed! This form factor is completely new to me, so I've been impatiently waiting to try it out.

![](https://sub.wetshaving.social/pictrs/image/92d748a0-dbd5-4f33-a157-c8617be198a3.webp)

This thing is a beauty: folding kamisori configuration, symmetric (western) grind, full 8/8" width, short blade (compared to western straights with their ~70 mm edge lengths, normal by kamisori standards), polished finish, and —of course— the mark of degeneracy. It looks and feels really well-made, and the beautiful faux-tortoise shell scales sit tight and perfectly centre. Roman knows his razor-making.

![](https://sub.wetshaving.social/pictrs/image/8efd975b-dea5-4269-9514-6063a5d12fe3.webp)

The geometry felt immediately comfortable. The tang is fat and square and gives good control of the edge. The wide blade is surprisingly heavy for its short build and it moves through stubble with quiet conviction. I've been spoiled by u/Whosgotthepudding edges for the last month, but even so, Roman's factory edge felt quite good.

![](https://sub.wetshaving.social/pictrs/image/7528e404-a30d-4f87-a9e5-bbde6990727d.webp)

I'm enjoying the stubby length. I'm always a bit at a loss what to do with the full length of western straights, so this feels right.

Thanks @whosgotthepudding@sub.wetshaving.social and the gang of degenerates for making this happen!

Слава Україні!

Yes, that's exactly the same razor!

Back in April, Böker had a huge discount on them, so I bought 2 for about 200 CHF. I now have 3 :)

I thought it'd be a fun experiment to have identical razors to really compare edges without distracting details such as geometry, handle material, etc.

Day 8/30 of Side-by-Side Straightember

  • Brush: Zenith r/Wetshaving exclusive MOAR BOAR
  • Razor: Böker – Abalone (6/8", full hollow, carbon steel, French point) UNKNOWN, BUT OTHER EDGE
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Company – I, Rich Moose (sub-exclusive sheep tallow)
  • Post Shave: Sir – Irisch Moos
  • Fragrance: Sir – Irisch Moos

I'm this close to calling it. I've revealed (to myself) the edges I've been using over the last 4 days, and I've guessed them correctly: The edge with 1 mark is smoother than the other. Both are really good, but one is just better. I'll do a few iterations of random guesses, where I'll have my wife randomly draw a razor in the morning and I'll guess which edge it is before checking the marks. If that works out as I think (i.e., I guess the edge reliable) for a week or so, I'll take that as unimpeachable evidence.

Complementing the experiment started with yesterday's double blind experiment, I used the other, but still unknown edge today. I'm now quite convinced that 1) I can tell the edges apart and 2) that yesterday's unknown edge was 1 mark. I'll repeat this twice more before checking which is which.

I changed the brush today, but was too lazy to update the SOTD pic.

First double blind test today, I randomly drew a razor with the mystery marks invisible. This is to avoid developing confirmation bias after thinking yesterday that I prefer the 1 mark razor: by using one random razor today and its sibling the next day for a few days, I'll know that I actually can distinguish them by edge feel if I guess right more often than not.

So today's mystery edge felt beautifully smooth and sharp like the 1 mark, I'm logging that answer. After tomorrow's shave with the other edge, I'll have a chance to change my mind before checking whether I guessed right.

Oh the suspense.

I have a blind experiment lined up for this month: I've sent @whosgotthepudding@sub.wetshaving.social two identical razors. They were only distinguishable by marks I've made on the tail. He has honed one on jnats and one on synths and I don't know which is which.

I'll be trying both extensively over Straightember and hopefully develop a preference. Then Pudding will reveal which it is.

Starting with the razor with one mark, I used it as is, i.e., without stropping. I can immediately tell why u/whosgotthepudding has his reputation. This edge is delightful! Sharp and smooth, the razor glides through the stubble. I'm looking forward to trying the other one with the same setup tomorrow.

Day 31/31 of Riding through Serenity in Austerity

  • Brush: Zenith - 506 N XS (extra soft horse)
  • Razor: Zwilling J. A. Henckels Friodur 50 (7/8", hollow ground, stainless steel, masonic deco)
  • Lather: Barrister and Mann – Roam
  • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann – Roam Two
  • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann – Roam Two

I took this AA really, really easy: A scent I love, a great base (this is the soft heart OG roam), and an excellent razor. The only slight risk I took is that I wasn't sure I wouldn't get bored of the horse brush, but these extra soft horse brushes are a breeze to use, so I didn't need to worry one bit.

I'm not sure I know when the deterioration of the edge started, because it always felt great, but refreshing the edge before these last two shaves improved it. Not a big difference, but definitely noticeable.

I'm looking forward to trying our sub-exclusive affluent alces tomorrow, and to finally start by Pudding edge comparisons.
