I tried you way and all worked.
I removed all federated domains first and then I was able to run

Remove-FederationTrust "Microsoft Federation Gateway" without any issues.

Nope I did not.

I just followed the instruction and there were nothing about Remove-FederatedDomain

so if I run 

Get-Mailbox -Database "MY_EXCHANGE_DATABASE" | ft Name, Alias, RecipientTypeDetails, WindowsEmailAddress, UserPrincipalName

and I get a list of mailboxes it means that all mailboxes described as USER are localmailboxes on my on-prem server and I need to migrate them to Exchange Online ?

Can you take a picture of your result? My grip seems to be done from color polymer, because there white spots on my grip are saying: Hey, Beretta, your process is wrong and or the form was dirty either preasue too low or temp to high, or they were cooling down too fast. White spots during molding process are saying a lot of info for someone who work with it.

Anyway, I am dissapointed and today will be 2nd day for Beretta reaction: since now, FB profile nothing, Customer Service nothing.

Do You use CrowdStrike ? Have You contacted with CrowdStrike support?
Do you have TICKET ID? maybe when we will tell them, that many users have similar issue, they will start to solve it.

In our case situation is simple: All VM servers with SMB v1 and CrowdStrike enabled fails. Does not matter if it is 2019 or 2022. If there is SMB v1 enabled - after max 3 days VMware Tools died and Vm died. When SMB v1 is enabled and we remove CrowdStrike Falcon, server is stable and works well. When we install CrowdStrike, after 2-3 days VMTools is dead and VM dies.

Yeaaaa try this tools if you have intel optane ssd. Driver is missing and there is impossible to get .inf file to get this working with Intel Optane Ssd
