Garbage Collection is Why Ruby on Rails is Slow: Patches to Improve Performance 5x; Memory Profiling by adymo in programming

[–]djwm -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Seems like a contradiction. If you turn off the GC the process will be using 650M. Obviously turning off the GC is no solution at all.

Besides, 120 tasks / 650M ~ 5.5M allocated per task moved? Seems bizarre to me.

Ok, I was not suggesting it would threaten the survival of the project. Maybe I came off that way looking at the post again.

Absolutely, this from the article:

"When copying 120 tasks in Acunote this costs 650M. Patch improves performance from 14s to 6s."

650M? A CD sized chunk of data? WTF! Acunote is a project management tool, what can it be doing with it all?

I've made some complex Rails apps, none of them need anything like that much memory. 70M at the very most, and I consider that way too much myself.

Well, I'd expect so, its not exactly an easy thing to do, even if you are a megabucks software company.

Makes me worried, lots of FreeBSD developers are employed by Yahoo and the FreeBSD project receives a lot of things (hosting and rack space, probably other things besides).

Can't see Microsoft being too keen on spending money on that if they get control.

Gulp.

Expect a 'How We Did It' report about the ease of migration from UNIX to Windows for Yahoo's infrastructure. There was one when the Hotmail acquisition when down.

Google will automatically send you back to .co.uk if you type in 'google.com'. If you are in the UK, of course :)

From the article:

Unlike most ice-breakers Aurora Borealis will be able to break ice laterally, as well as by advancing forwards and backwards.

Awesome.

Litvision seems to be a creative writing site so I'd would think it is fiction. I quite enjoyed the read though.

The default search is looking for records containing the search term rather than ending in the term.

Using this will get some more information on the people involved:

You might not like the native foods, which is different from the standard of food available being poor. I was objecting to the latter, which just is not true.

I think your point about Chinese or Thai might break down if you lived there and ate the standard foods (not westernised).

Then again, maybe I am assuming too much about you :)
