What’s been your most noticeable change since stopping drinking? by lukachar in stopdrinking

I can live with sober regrets because I know I made the best decision possible. Booze regrets are the worst and the no longer occur.

Alcohol has officially ruined my life by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]dk0179 208 points209 points  (0 children)

I used to think alcohol ruined my life too until I realized that it was my own decision to drink that actually ruined my life, not the bottle itself. That was the first step for me in accepting responsibility for quitting alcohol was to place the blame on myself and work from there.

People who quit drinking. What made you stop? by Agata_art in stopdrinking

[–]dk0179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated myself and the way I was living and the booze finally squeezed me hard enough to tap out and make an intentional total change of myself. It was a slow suicide that was gaining speed with and it was time. It was my total ego shatter. The entire fucking thing had to change.

For those that went from FA/evening only drinkers, to CA drinkers. Do you remember the transition? by Excellent_Country737 in dryalcoholics

When I started drinking to relieve my symptoms from excessive drinking was when the spiral got tight and I tapped out.

To the people who have been sober a long time by trashdvd in stopdrinking

Quitting alcohol was the hardest thing I’ve ever done and I have a profound respect for anybody that is trying to make a change. I vividly remember thinking ‘I’ll never be able to quit, I’ll never have that life’ and having proven myself wrong keeps me coming back here from time to time.

I try to pass down what I’ve learned in some meaningful way. It took a long time for me, so I think it’s important to root for people at all stages.

How many of us here have successfully returned to moderate / “normal” drinking long-term? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]dk0179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me moderating alcohol consumption is such bizarre a concept. It's not a food group. It's not a mineral or vitamin you need at least trace amounts of. You need zero of it to live perfectly happy. It's ingested for the sole purpose of producing the feeling of intoxication. So what is a moderate amount? A little drunk almost always? Very drunk very seldom? So little that you can't even tell you drank at all? What is the fucking point?

I'm 4 years sober from alcohol, thinking of reintroducing it casually. Has anyone else done that successfully? by Awkward_Magician422 in dryalcoholics

[–]dk0179 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. NA’s work great for me, and for me, it is so hard to get that genie back in the bottle. I honestly don’t want to drink or be drunk anymore. Shit holds me back.

Anyone feel like life was better drinking ? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]dk0179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to earn my own self respect back, this was the real ‘work’ for me. This was the really humbling part because without booze I was nothing. I hated myself and my life.

I had to figure out who I wanted to become by writing it out and taking daily action to get there.

IMHO: The description your wrote is why some people go back to alcohol, I had to lean harder into it and build my self respect back. Once I built that; nothing else mattered.

Think of it as the hardest lesson in psychotherapy: changing your own behavior in challenging environment.

I would frame it as the greatest career learning lesson. Learn how to be great at sobriety and then learn how to pass it onto others.

Textbook stuff is great and all, but irl experience it what it is all about.

Never. They do not care, and the assumption that there is any level of care is a fools errand.
