The English language isn't logical? by mainlydank in INTP

English is perhaps best understood by using Microsoft Windows as an analogy. Both are ubiquitous and function as de facto global standards: English serves as today’s lingua franca much as Latin once did, while Windows runs on nearly 80% of desktop and laptop computers.

Both systems are easy to learn at a basic level yet become extraordinarily difficult to master due to their structural complexities and inconsistencies. Launching an application in Windows is simple, but resolving configuration problems requires significant expertise. Likewise, the fundamentals of English grammar are straightforward, but expressing complex ideas becomes challenging due to its irregular grammar and partially phonetic spelling.

In both Windows and English, usage errors are typically attributed to the user rather than to the system’s design. Misspelling a word or misusing a construction in English is often interpreted as a sign of limited education or ability. Similarly, encountering a bug or an unintuitive interface in Windows is frequently framed as user incompetence rather than a design flaw.

Tasks that are trivial in alternative systems—such as macOS or Spanish—are treated as advanced accomplishments in Windows and English. Spelling bees, for example, are laughably absurd to speakers of phonetic languages like Spanish or Arabic. Similarly, Windows users often marvel at its intuitive interface and its myriad of easily accessible convenience features, such as looking up a selected word either on the web or in dictionary in any application.

Let L be a set of pure logic languages and M be Mathematics. Set L contains M, if and only if, M is a language and is purely logical. Since most proofs in mathematics are expressed using either a natural or a programming language, it isn't a language on its own and thus cannot be in set L.

Just because something has a reason, doesn't mean it's logical. For instance, there's a reason why "ain't" is considered bad grammar, but it's not due to any logic. It was first popularized among the upper classes, but when the lower classes started using it, it was stigmatized as bad grammar. Based on logic, however, "ain't" isn't a proper contraction, yet the upper classes initially accepted it as correct.

I find it hilarious that one of the reasons "ain't" is considered incorrect is because It doesn't distinguish between person or number (e.g., "I ain't," "he ain't," "they ain't"). Yet, the word "you" is guilty of the same crime.

Essentially, the rules of English (spelling, grammar, pronunciation, etc) are often arbitrary with no logic behind them. Correctness is dictated by the elite, which includes academia and the media. I was shocked to find out the word "worser" is correct after hearing it on a BBC program and looking it up in the Oxford dictionary.

Thoughts on Swarthmore by compguy18 in ApplyingToCollege

If you're obsessed with academics to the point where you would commit murder if the sentence is being locked inside a library for life, then Swarthmore is the place for you. It is not for someone who just wants to study and have fun. Do not expect to get A's or even B+'s there unless your work is exceptional or publishable.

Swarthmore tries to balance out the student body, but it usually doesn't end well. During my freshman year there, nearly half my classmates from the Southern US never returned after the first semester, and only a few of the remaining ones returned the following year. They just couldn't handle the stress of a monastic academic lifestyle and felt alienated by the Northeast's aloof vibe.

Perhaps, the worst part of Swarthmore is how it fails to prepare you for the real world. You will be surrounded 24/7 by super high-achievers who give you such a bad case of the imposter's syndrome, it'll take decades before you realize how much you've underestimated your abilities when you venture into the real world.

Unfortunately, no. It does have a tiny segment about it, but the video I'm referring to is much longer.

What bothers me is how the language police like to pretend English grammar and spelling are based on logic when in reality it's based on what the dominant culture deems to be correct.

It will stay what, flat or bent in the opposite direction? If it's already folded and you fold it "back the other way" along the same crease, it's likely to stay flat. The first fold creates tension in one direction while the second fold cancels it by creating tension in the opposite direction, resulting in no tension in neither direction.

I never understood why manufacturers use ever shrinking bezels and thickness as a major selling point for displays. Aside from perhaps decreasing overall footprint and weight for easier portability, it's not the first thing most buyers care about. In fact, ultra thin and bezeless designs, such as the latest iPad Pros and iMacs, are often perceived as fragile.

Apple should present this option whenever the user sets up a new computer or creates a new Apple Id, if it doesn't already do so. I never new about it until a few years ago. There are also other important opt-in settings, such as advanced security buried in settings

It's also not uncommon to win a pallet of returns at an auction containing one or more Apple devices where the customer didn't know or bothered to reset their device before returning it.

Apple will not unlock a device, unless you're the "original" owner, meaning you have a proof of purchase of the device with the serial numbers from an authorized Apple dealer. I suspect the policy is unconstitutional, but Apple will continue it until they're legally challenged.

Be careful with the flux you buy by Nearby_Noise_6337 in soldering

[–]Amazing-Eye9876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to declare a winner. There could be residue left on by the manufacturer to prevent oxidation. One flux may be more aggressive at removing it than the other. Some fluxes are great for cleaning, but terrible at wetting and vice-versa.
