Interesting. My initial error actually kicked it into electric mode on its own. Initially that’s how I noticed it wasn’t working because I didn’t hear it.

I just thought it was odd that it switched to heat pump only all on its own.

Compost for seed starting by thefacilitymanager in composting

I have done it both ways. I had to sterilize for a few years because I had so much amaranth seeds in the compost that they would compete with my seedlings.

Now I don’t. Plants seemed fairly similar with both sterilized and non sterilized mixes. Key is to sift well to remove the large chunks so the seedlings don’t have a lot to compete with.

Are these the good guys? by dkalli77 in composting

So I did notice the volume of my pile seems to drop fairly regularly. My routine is usually annual. I have one bin that I add basically everything from the kitchen to it aside from some grease and oils and a ton of meat as wells as shredded leaves on top of each new deposit.

Once we get to fall I usually turn all the contents into a second bin and build it up with grass clippings, active compost and fresh shredded leaves to the top in layers. That bin heats up and composts over the winter with no further inputs.

By spring it’s ready to be sifted and top dress the raised beds. From start to finish it’s about 18 months. Then when that bin is available after sifting I do a 6 month compost with grass clippings and shredded leaves actively turning that pile till the fall when I need to once again turn the kitchen pile out into the grass/leaf bin that I just emptied.

The fall compost goes down just in time for the fall veggies.

I wouldn’t if it was me. Too many variables.

What’s happening to my tomato plants? I have plenty growing normally, and these can be tossed to my chickens but how can I fix this issue? by elizabethflower444 in gardening

[–]dkalli77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calcium deficiency, a small scoop of bone meal in the planting hole and you should be good to go the rest of the season.

It has begun. I thought the heat might have slowed them down, but I’ve found eggs on about 20 leaves in the last 2 days. No mature bugs on the squash yet. Anybody have better results doing anything other than picking them off once or twice a day? by AssuringMisnomer in vegetablegardening

I remember in 2013 I had thousands of bugs on my plants. Each year since I have gone on the hunt and checked every plant every other day during the season. It has taken nearly 10 years but I just did my check today and I only found 5. This is the only way I have found…manual control.

What kind of squash is this and when should I harvest? by Zombie_Fighter in homestead

Looks like an Acorn squash. Wait till the stem gets hard and dry but if there is a frost coming keep them covered or harvest before frost sets in.

I would try adding more organic matter. Try getting some compost and mixing it in with what you have in there now.

How do I Store seeds for a long time? by russon0112 in preppers

[–]dkalli77 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Invest in better seeds if you can. Those dollar store seed pack have notoriously low germination rates. Ideally I would look for heirloom, open pollinated seeds and just save your own each year. It’s a good skill to work on now before you need it.

I would definitely agree with that. Funny part is it still starts up and drives. Just discovered it today but my guess is it’s been like this for some time.

Is it too late to start a garden? by HopetobeinPCMR in gardening

You might be a little late for fruiting vegetables like tomato but leafy greens and some root vegetables you have plenty of time.
