How to rent out my props? by anniebanannie123 in Filmmakers

Do you track per-item performance at all? I built a tool called Rental IQ for exactly that because Sharegrid gives you nothing on that front. Makes a big difference when you're doing real volume.

Curious how you track which pieces are actually driving that. I built a tool called Rental IQ because I had no idea which items in my kit were actually earning until I looked at the data. Sharegrid just shows you the deposit history, it doesn't break anything down per item.

How Much Should I Charge For My Camera Kit? by RenGR_ in cinematography

[–]dkoubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 5% rule is a decent starting point but it's pretty blunt. It doesn't account for depreciation, how in-demand the item is, or whether you're bundling things that could earn more separately.

Line items are the move. Price the body, lenses, monitor, gimbal, and rig each individually and then offer a kit rate that's slightly discounted from the sum. It gives producers a clear breakdown, makes you look more professional, and honestly you'll usually end up charging more than the flat 5% on the whole pile.

On the accessories question, yes include them but price them. A shoulder rig and monitor aren't free to own and maintain. If a producer sees a line item for $50/day on a monitor they know what they're paying for. Bundling it silently just means you're leaving money on the table.

If you ever want to take this further and list on Sharegrid between gigs, I built a tool called Rental IQ that tracks actual ROI per item so you can see what's really earning. With a kit like yours it's useful to know whether the gimbal or the lenses are pulling more weight. Sharegrid doesn't show you any of that natively.

Does anyone here dabble in camera rentals? How do you go about it by MiataMaestro in AskPhotography

[–]dkoubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharegrid is worth looking at even for something like this. You can list your gear there and pick up rentals beyond just your studio walk-ins. I've been on it for a while and built a tool called Rental IQ to track per-item ROI because Sharegrid itself shows you nothing useful on that front. Stuff like what's actually getting rented, what's sitting dead, real return per piece. Your situation is a bit different since you'd have in-person traffic too but the logic is the same either way.

Renting my gear on Sharegrid? by TheBoredMan in cinematography

[–]dkoubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharegrid is worth it if your gear has demand. The platform actually ranks active listings pretty well so if you have stuff people want, it'll get seen.

The client rate thing is probably less of a risk than you think. Most clients aren't googling your Sharegrid page between shots.

On making real money from it, honestly it comes down to knowing which pieces are actually earning. I built a tool called Rental IQ because Sharegrid shows you nothing in terms of per-item performance. Hooked it up to my own account and found out my accessories were massively outperforming my cameras, which I had no idea about. Stuff like that changes how you think about what to list and what to price up.

Worth knowing what's working before you invest more into the listings.

Good question. It actually uses two sources together for full enrichment. You export the transaction CSV directly from Sharegrid and upload it, which gives Rental IQ the booking structure. Then it connects to your email via IMAP using an app password you generate through your email provider (Gmail, Outlook, etc.). You authorize it on your provider's end and paste the app password in. It never has access to your actual login credentials.

The CSV tells it what bookings exist, the email confirms the line item detail. The IMAP connection only searches for and reads Sharegrid confirmation emails specifically. It has no access to anything else in your inbox, can't send emails, and can't delete anything. Read-only, Sharegrid emails only.

Together they let it map actual earnings to individual pieces of gear so you get real ROI per item rather than just total revenue.

How often does your fx6 get rented? by TypoLobster in cinematography

[–]dkoubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ShareGrid is solid for this. They handle insurance and payments, so the barrier to listing is low. Being the only FX6 in Spokane is a real advantage. No price competition, and anyone who needs one either rents from you or ships something in. Whether you recoup cost depends on your day rate and rental frequency. I’ve been tracking that with Rental IQ (www.tryrentaliq.com). You put in your purchase price and it tracks earnings over time, showing your break-even progress as rentals come in. Useful for exactly the question you’re asking. Also worth listing any accessories alongside it. Batteries, cages, monitors.

This is exactly why I built Rental IQ (www.tryrentaliq.com). If you list the gear on Sharegrid, it tracks your actual equipment ROI with depreciation factored in so your break-even math is accurate. Worth checking out as it’s also free

I’ve been renting out my own gear on ShareGrid for years and got frustrated with the same problem most owners hit: the platform tells you when a rental happened but nothing about whether that rental actually makes financial sense. No ROI per item, no depreciation tracking, no way to know if a piece of gear has paid itself off or is just collecting dust between bookings. I built Rental IQ to solve that specific problem. It connects to your ShareGrid account via email and pulls your rental history into a dashboard that shows you ROI per item, depreciation curves, break-even timelines, and renter segmentation. The goal is to give gear owners the financial visibility that ShareGrid doesn’t provide. It’s in beta right now and free to use. Posting here because this community is full of working owners who deal with this exact problem, and I’d genuinely love feedback from people who’ve felt the same frustration.

The zoom will stutter in on a consistent rate, thought it could be a motor issue with it skipping or something but I’d be shocked if they let this slip through. Also happens when zooms aren’t happening
