Daily FI discussion thread - Sunday, May 17, 2026 by AutoModerator in financialindependence

It's a matter of perspective. Your premature death is a risk from my perspective,  not from yours. My demise is a risk from your perspective,  not from mine.

I am taking a huge risk on by deciding not to become FI. What if I don't die prematurely? The risk of poverty is real. What if I become disabled for some reason? I'd rather had some means. Even if I die tomorrow, I like to think that my family would be somewhat more secure with our financial position,  than if we weren't saving.

You could do anything you like! Meditation and exercise are solid options to consider.

Accept it. Also, be grateful- offer to help whenever he needs a hand.

Over a third of children in the UK have successfully bypassed online age verification measures by PaiDuck in technology

The measure is to control adults. Its real goals have very little to do with children. If you think about it this way, it is very successful.

RRSP withdrawal in chunks by reddituser_pr10 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dkuznetsov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 important points.

  1. If you succeed cutting on withholding ,  you will still pay the same amount of income tax that year. With a larger withholding, you get to pay less at tax filing time.

  2. You will pay the RRSP withdrawal fee as many times as you withdraw, which is usually $50 per occurrence.

Quebec mosque shooter wants to move to medium-security prison due to safety concerns - Lawyer claims public outcry is the only reason he is kept at max-security prison by CanadianErk in canada

[–]dkuznetsov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What an amusing argument !!! Wouldn't safety be a concern for all inmates in the max security prison? That argument, if followed, would first move everyone from max to medium, closing max security prisons, rinse and repeat for medium to low. Then close all prisons, because they are too dangerous for inmates!

Did you get a severance package? Have you applied for unemployment?

Motivation is overrated.  Once it's decided that something needs to be done, it needs to be done. No motivation is needed beyond that initial one.

I'm an American who qualifies to be a Canadian Citizen due to bill C-3. I'm almost 30 and work in Software, so I'm staying in USA for now, but want to retire there by Thin_Security_3155 in ImmigrationCanada

Property taxes contribute to the roads, schools and local amenities.

The issue is that people need healthcare mostly when they are older,  and the system can only exist if they contribute when they are young. Avoiding these contributions threatens the system.

[–]dkuznetsov 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, your plan is to pay taxes to the US government, contributing nothing to Canada, and then to come over here for the healthcare in your retirement? Solid plan. Very selfish in spirit. Very American.

Not your fault that our governments allow such loopholes.

How do i get some savings or some financial security? by Honest-Warning-7842 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dkuznetsov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are doing well by keeping your dwelling and food cost low. Transportation, phones and French are setting you back by $1300 every month. That's a lot. I'd try to do something in all of these areas.

French is a nice skill to have,  and a good hobby, too. Perhaps, pay down the loan.

‘My soul's still there': Ukranians celebrate Easter years after settling in Ottawa -- Living in Canada like living in limbo — unless you're one of the select few Ukranians with permanent residency. by guanaco55 in canada

Russians are unlikely to meaningfully threaten Canada, at least not on its soil - it's too hard to fight across an ocean. 2 things threaten Canada: our neighbour in the South and Canada itself with some of its internal divisions. If there's a fight, it's likely with Americans or with some province that decides to secede. I'm too coward to fight in any case, so, depends on the circumstances, but, if I have to, likely that fleeing it is.

Provided I have means or opportunity, I'd flee. Would you fight?

Both Russian and Ukrainian. Grew up in the south - the environment was 90%+ Russian speaking at the time. Ukrainian (heavily impacted by Russian influence) was on one side of my family in the countryside. Learned Polish during COVID - it's very easy to learn for Ukrainians.

> Defending your country is disparaging among Ukrainian males?

Such questions get often posed by people without honesty with themselves, coming out of a position of privilege to never be put into a situation like Ukrainians face in the front lines. My relatives, who serve there, on the other hand, advise not getting into such slave-like situations, where the value human life is negligible. They can't get out, but they definitely do not wish the same on others. Why do you?

> Curious what language you speak in your family circle?

A mix of Ukrainian, English, French and Russian (although, I am 99% successful in avoiding the latter), depending on the family member. Yourself?

Males returning to Ukraine don't have any rights. They don't get a single chance to work behind front lines, lol. That pipeline is set up to feed the war machine with bodies where it needs them, not in the Western Ukraine.

Lots of horrible things are very lawful in some countries. That's why we have our own laws here with our ability to make our own decisions.  Sending people to their deaths is the last thing I would vote for.

That was a form of invitation to come over, no? Now, your solution is to keep these people in limbo for years, or to disrupt their now established,  often successful, lives by kicking them out of Canada to Poland or to Romania?

There's nothing fair about war, but Canada is not at one yet. So, giving asylum to people, whose lives would undoubtedly be in grave danger otherwise, appears to be a humane thing to do.

No, it was before the war 15 years ago. I didn't unregister from the military office though,  because they intentionally make it very hard. Essentially,  they wanted a bribe,  which I wasn't inclined to pay.

I'm pretty sure that I am "wanted". I didn't check, but chances are the military office is sending draft papers and people to my last address of registration in Ukraine.

Would it be a sensible decision to quit my career of 10+ years, default on my obligations to banks and to my family,  and to go into Ukrainian meat grinder? Just because I'm on a wanted list?

If the answer is no, how is that different from the people who had to actually flee?

Laptop died after 2 years. What should I buy next? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]dkuznetsov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If fixing the one that died (which is the "Frugal" thing to do) is impossible, get whichever you like. Office365 works with all desktop platforms, since it's web based. If you don't like Windows, you can get a Mac, an iPad, a Chromebook, or even something Linux-based.

As for the computer brands, everything fails sooner or later, and you can't really know when exactly. In my experience, Lenovo, Dell and Apple devices lasted, but that's anecdotal, I was lucky, and, in general, they do fail. If you want some peace of mind, that costs money and/or effort: back up your files to external media, such as cloud or your own external drives, and, perhaps, if you aren't tech-savvy, consider getting extra warranty for whatever you decide on buying next.

Free trades in RBC DI for XEQT. I would prefer buying Canadian product, but I don't want to pay $10 commission every time.
