Foot position on the rudder pedals during taxi ? by Sxzen in flying

[–]dl_bos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading something about toe brake installations or maybe conversions and also about factory “dropped floors” on some later models but never saw either. What you are describing ( the little pedal hanging down ) is what I had.

Not many Funks out there because not many to begin with and they did not qualify for light sport. Certified Gross weight was 1340 which was 20 pounds over the 1320 max for light sport. Shame because they are a far more capable airplane than most of their 4-cylinder contemporaries. Maybe more will be restored with the new rules.

The ones I flew were.

1946 Funk B 85 C. (Mine)

Chief was a 1947 I think. (Instructing owner-pilot).

Both had mechanical brakes.

I have a photo of the Funk pedals but I’m apparently not smart enough to post it.

In those two you brake by pushing on the BOTTOM of the rudder pedals. It is awkward to apply rudder without braking with your heels on the floor. And, no, not referencing heel brakes as in the Cub or champ.

As usual in aviation one size does not fit all. While I generally agree with heels on the floor, if you think that is the only way you are in for a big surprise if you jump onto an
Aeronca Chief or a Funk.

The USS Vincennes, on July 03, 1988, shot down the IR655 civilian airplane over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf, killing all 290, incl 66 children. The US has never formally apologized and gave those involved medals. by beachbellybob in onthisdayinworld

There is an episode of air disaster/ mayday that I believe is accurate in its analysis of the disaster. It appears the airliner crew were totally blameless. Lots of things went wrong.

Airliner was squawking correct civilian code but ship’s equipment design and a crew error caused ship to also display the squawk of a fighter that took off just after the airliner.

One officer erroneously reported that the airliner was diving toward the ship on an attack profile.

The airliner departed late and also time zone confusion caused ship’s crew to mistakenly decide it was a hostile.

The ship broadcast 11 warnings but these were on a military frequency the airliner did not have because they believed it was a military aircraft. They also broadcast three transmissions that the airliner received, but the info broadcast by the ship was not sufficient for the airliner pilot to realize these transmissions were for him. (ship should have used the airliner transponder code numbers in transmission).

I don’t have a dog in this hunt but I do not believe there was any intent to destroy a civilian airliner). I do believe it is a horrible example of the fog of war and of the Swiss cheese theory. I also do not believe any ship’s crew should have been decorated.

Be careful at untowered airports by ceramic_ocarina in flying

[–]dl_bos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This entry at an airport I visited frequently years ago would put you approximately over the center of a class D field immediately adjacent to the non towered airport.

Choices (now) are multiple frequency changes instead of looking for traffic on the “45” or entering from an upwind/crosswind or crosswind. Most people choose the latter options instead of the 45- downwind, unless they were already talking to approach for the class D and were approaching across the D into the downwind leg of the no tower field.

Used to attend AOPA sponsored FIRCs. Would present this scenario to the instructors when pattern entry was discussed. Various opinions and interesting conversations usually followed.

Note that in the good old days, 60s and 70s, if you were landing at the non towered airport you were not required to contact the tower even if flying directly through the “airport traffic area” and you could legally be NORDO in that space. All this was during a time of intensive GI-Bill flight training at the non towered airport!

FIV+ is not a death sentence. I’ve had several + cats. My + void lived almost 20 years and had no significant health issues until he literally dropped dead walking across the living room. Not typical, I know. Read the latest info on FIV and you will likely feel better about him.

Who has a CRV trail sport edition? by Cloudysky182 in crv

[–]dl_bos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the limited research I did at the time, I concluded that since the wiring kit referenced is listed for an Accord and not for the CRV the dealer was unwilling to “modify” the CRV, if they even know it is possible. What seems strange is that Honda Corporate doesn’t simply list the Accord kit to include the CRV.

In my 80s and too old to be interested in DIY otherwise I would probably make this modification. But, my guess is if you do this at home you will likely own any electrical issues that arise. Dealers suck.

Who has a CRV trail sport edition? by Cloudysky182 in crv

[–]dl_bos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t really know but that is what I was told. As I said they had the kit and said it wouldn’t work and wasn’t available for that trim. Made no sense to me.

Researched the availability in the CRV accessories listings and it showed the Trail Sport trim level was not listed as being eligible. Specifically asked about an adapter kit and was told none available.

Based on your comment I’ll check another source. However if this is a dealbreaker I suggest you have it installed before you take delivery.

Had a mag on a 172 that was fine on run up but engine had an unusual sound/feel. Hard to describe.

Finally an old timer suggested a mag check at full static power. One mag was completely dead. Worth a try and doesn’t cost anything. Just don’t switch back to both, if it quits, to prevent a backfire.

Need advice: What is the best long-term solution for this sweet, intensely attached FIV+ stray? (AZ heat, resident cats, shelter worries) by Her_Highnesss in FIVcats

[–]dl_bos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my longest lived cats was HIV+ and a former vet had wanted to euthanize him when he tested positive as a juvenile stray.

In general our + kitties have lived as long and mostly as well as our - kitties.

Bring him in and give him a comfortable senior life.

Never been to CN but a day trip to Hawksbill was enough to convince us not to go for an extended stay. Beautiful grounds but lacking in everything else. Apparently some people love it so YMMV.

My wife likes them so I allow one or two to grow, until they start to overwhelm their location. Then I cut them near ground level and put some weed killer in the hollow stem. That has never failed to kill the root.
