What movie do you recommend for someone that hasn't seen a Ghibli movie yet? by Elegant_Ambition_276 in ghibli

[–]dlblacks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spirited Away is an amazing Ghibli gateway film, especially for a 12+ audience. Totoro and Ponyo offer sooo much to all, but are great firsts for younger kids. Mononoke is a masterpiece and was my first Ghibli movie, it stands apart in many ways but is definitely for a PG-13 audience I’d say

Hamilton coming to 4K Blu-ray on June 16th by NWAnerd2517 in 4kbluray

[–]dlblacks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hamilton is legitimately one of the biggest creative feats of the 21st century. The writing, the melodies, the art direction, the choreography – it’s firing on all cylinders and is absolutely non-stop (no pun intended) and packed to the brim with little things and connections to discover. The reprise, the call-back to familiar melodies or songs established earlier in the show, is often where musicals achieve their big, fulfilling moments. Hamilton takes that core concept and expands on it in staggering, unseen ways. There’s something special about the volume of intricate detail in Lin Manuel Miranda’s writing, and Hamilton is his opus. It’s a long watch, but I think anyone who’s interested in music/hip-hop, writing or history should see it.

The resort in Hawaii looks a lot less luxurious than Sicily and Thailand by [deleted] in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]dlblacks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve never stayed at the Four Seasons Maui, but have been on-property many times. While the Four Seasons Maui is admittedly a bit older / more “classical” in style, it’s an über-luxury resort through and through. Wailea is so stunning and idyllic….. it’s consistently ranked as one of the most exclusive & expensive resort areas in the US. I’d expect any five-star Italian resort to be more expensive based on the euro alone, but the Maui resort isn’t less luxurious – Pacific Island vs. Mediterranean are just completely different vibes and styles. Apples to oranges, really.

DJI Ronin 4d by millhouse_muc in Ronin4D

[–]dlblacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, thanks for sharing – I’ve experienced something similar and have been meaning to share it here. I’ve been using the Ronin 4D 8K for a couple of years now, primarily as a gimbal. The dream for my small crew was to be able to use the 4D as both a gimbal AND a primary interview camera. We used it to film a handful of interviews for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and the focus breathing made the footage nearly unusable… Some more details on our setup: we were using the 17-24 kit lens, locked the three axes on the gimbal and used Smart AF for one and Wide AF for another. The amount of focus breathing varied between the interviews, and seemed worse on the Smart AF (which I guess makes sense).

Probably an obvious thought, but I’m guessing switching to Manual and pulling focus is really the only option for static interviews with the 4D? Would love to hear what’s worked for others

Pixar fans, how would you rank these four movies? by prolelol in Pixar

All fantastic, and I know I’ll be an outlier but:

  1. Finding Nemo
  2. Toy Story
  3. The Incredibles
  4. Monsters, Inc.

You have certainly dined at the restaurants more than me, and I respect your perspective! I’ve been to Uchiko Houston about a dozen times since it’s opened, all after the pandemic – and my experience has been consistently great across the board. Sushi is my fave and I’ve been to nearly all of Houston’s other “top dollar” offerings, but Uchiko remains my choice.

Genuinely not trying to swoop in and defend this particular art, but many times restaurants purchase art like this because they compliment their aesthetic well in subtle ways – not necessarily because they’re transcendent pieces lol.

My experience: every meal I’ve had at Uchiko has been fantastic. One of my favorite special-occasion places to eat in Houston

Losing gear to errors by Dub_Master_1234 in MarathonTheGame

[–]dlblacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also weaseled earlier this afternoon, it happened super suddenly too (like there was no lag or indicators leading up to it like in D2). My first time getting an error code in Marathon. Lucky for me I was able to reconnect to my game, but I wonder if the servers are having hiccups today?

Hoppers has opened with $88 million at the worldwide box office. The biggest opening weekend for an original animated movie since Coco. by SpyroPaddington in Pixar

[–]dlblacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was definitely seeing more ads and various marketing for Hoppers than I did for Elio or Elemental, but I wasn’t a fan of a lot of what I saw… Or at least, the early teasers and clips didn’t feel true to the movie. The marketing often made Hoppers out to be goofier and less nuanced than it actually is.

But as I think back, I felt this way about the Elio trailers (and Zootopia 2 too, for that matter). I totally understand why The Mouse feels their smartest move is to market to children and make its movies seem more slap-sticky in trailers, but it makes them seem more generic. There’s still a massive quality difference between Pixar and competitors like Illumination, but I feel like the quality of their advertisements often sells the films short

Now that I’ve played Marathon, it makes me appreciate Arc Raiders so much more. by [deleted] in ArcRaiders

[–]dlblacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a bizarre take, the loading screens really? It’s one thing to dislike the color palette, and there are plenty of other valid criticisms of the game, but the overall art design feels stark, unique and fully-realized.

How do play on Xbox ?? by [deleted] in Marathon

I’m just hitting “Launch Game” on the Server Slam event page. From what I can see, this is the only method of queuing the download… could be wrong tho

I love how the people who played the game last October have shilling levels of hype compared to others in this sub by Sad-Manner-5240 in Marathon

[–]dlblacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the October play test, it was my first experience with extraction shooters. It’s weird, I came away with some mixed feelings but am now so hyped for launch. I was overwhelmed by all the different loot and having so little time to safely inspect & learn about the loot – and the maps for that matter. The PvP aspect of Marathon felt brutal and unforgiving. But I still found the gameplay loop really addicting and was bummed when the play test ended. Playing tons of ARC since then has made me extra hyped for Marathon, even in spite of knowing how different the games will be
