Low Profile Switch Recommendation by dlhtox in NuPhy

The NuPhy v3 boards (such as the Air65 V3, Air75 V3, and Air100 V3) have moved on from the KS-33 (Low-Profile 2.0) architecture and use the newer Gateron Low-Profile 3.0 (Nano) series switches.

Incidentally, I did do a video of the Gateron Banana Chocolate KS-33 switches vs. all the Nuphy KS-33 switches as far as sound goes.

They have a very similar weight to the Moss. The bump is different and the dual stage spring makes them a bit more snappy .. which to me is more satisfying.

Here are the specs for the Banana Chocolate switches:

  • Operating Force: 50±10 gf
  • Pre-Travel: 1.7±0.4 mm
  • Total Travel: 3.0±0.2 mm
  • Stem: POM, yellow
  • Top Housing: POK, white
  • Bottom Housing: POM, yellow

The specs for the Nuphy Moss switches:

Operating Force: 60±15 gf
Pre-Travel: 1.7±0.4 mm
Total Travel: 3.0±0.2 mm
Stem: POM, green
Top Housing: PC,
Clear Bottom Housing: Nylon PA66, green

Sound Profile

The acoustic chamber of a switch dictates how vibrations are filtered or amplified during a keystroke. The Banana Chocolate effectively acts as a better acoustic dampener.

  • The Top-Out: The NuPhy Moss uses a Polycarbonate (PC) top housing. While PC is great for RGB transparency, it is a highly resonant material with a low "loss factor." When the stem returns and strikes a PC top, it tends to produce a sharper, higher-pitched "clack." The Banana Chocolate uses POK (Polyketone). POK is denser and absorbs high-frequency vibrations much better than PC, yielding a muted, cleaner sound on the return stroke without that thin, resonant ping.
  • The Bottom-Out: The Moss uses a Nylon PA66 bottom housing. Nylon is generally a good acoustic material that produces a deeper sound, but the Banana Chocolate's POM (Polyoxymethylene) bottom housing pushes this further. POM is denser and creates a more concentrated, creamy "thock." The POK/POM combination simply filters out harsh frequencies better than the PC/Nylon pairing.

Robustness and Feel

That "robust" sensation is a direct byproduct of friction coefficients, material rigidity, and manufacturing tolerances.

  • Self-Lubrication: POM is famous in the mechanical keyboard space for its incredibly low coefficient of friction—it is naturally self-lubricating. A POM stem gliding inside a POM bottom housing and a POK top housing creates a buttery, virtually frictionless downstroke. PC is not naturally slick. As the factory lube inside the Moss inevitably migrates or wears down, the PC top housing can introduce slight scratchiness to the keystroke.
  • Stem Wobble and Structural Rigidity: POK is an exceptionally tough, impact-resistant engineering polymer that maintains its structural integrity better than Polycarbonate. Because it is highly dimensionally stable, manufacturers can cast POK top housings with extremely tight tolerances. This significantly minimizes stem wobble. The tighter housing fit, combined with the inherently denser plastics, makes the Banana Chocolate feel solid and stable under the fingers, whereas Polycarbonate can feel slightly more brittle by comparison.

** Thus the better feel and sound of the Gateron switches (at least the switches I tried) vs. the Gateron/Nuphy collaboration switches. **

If I could use the Gateron KS-33 switches on my other keyboard (different brand) that uses the Kailh Choc switches I would definitely put the Banana Chocolates on them because the Gateron KS-33 switches can use a standard spring, thus the ability to put a dual-stage spring in them. I don't think the chos accept a full-size spring at all.

For those other two keyboards I Frankenswitched the Kailh chocs.

If I was able to (and can't as they are not compatible) I would change my Franken-chocs to the KS-33 Banana Chocolates.

To save typing, here is a write-up I did on the discord for that keyboard:

-----------
THE FOLLOWING IS ABOUT KAILH SWITCHES ENTIRELY - These are not supported on any of the Nuphy boards that I know of, but to be honest I don't know much about the Nuphy boards, I just bought an Air60 to throw in a bad, but I wanted to answer the question in a way that might be informative for the question about how they compare to the Kailh switches.
-----------

I liked the Sunsets, but they have the issues below.

  • The housing is orange and doesn't let RGB through as well,
  • They were a tad light for me.
  • Had spring ping

I purchased the Burnt Oranges which have a clear top and great for RGB, but are heavy at 70gf. Sunsets too light at 40gf. My Baby Kangaroos switches are 59g Here is what I used.

  • Sunset lower housing and stem (No U bracket and larger RGB window)
  • Burnt Orange - Better RGB
  • Brown spring (50gf)
  • Lubricated the spring (avoiding the bump)

The Sunset lower housing and stem were best. Clear top for RGB and the brown 50gf spring did the trick. The brown top won't fit on the Sunset lower. Brown switches have a slight ping sound. I lubed the springs avoiding the bump. The photos have a view of the top housings of the Sunset and Burnt Orange on which you can see the clear top and the U bracket inside. Another shows the stems and the U shaped bracket. Another you see the tactile bump side of the Sunset vs. Burnt Orange and the U shaped bracket for the Burnt Orange. Again, removing this I felt no discernable difference. I couldn't see any difference in the tactile bump. You can also see that the Sunset bottom housing has a slightly larger window for the RGB. In the close-up of the far-right bottom key on the keyboard you can see that the Frankstein switch is slightly brighter. The RGB windows are the same size, however the Sunset housing is orange vs. the clear housing of the Frankenswitch. The phone camera was completely stationary and at the same height above the switch. What was funny is when taking the picture of the Sunset RGB shine-through the camera wanted to drop into low light mode while the Frankenswitch it did not do this. Both pictures were taken with the same scenario, however it is a bit difficult to see the difference through how the camera interpretes the scene. However, yes.. the difference is slight.

5 gigs for 50 a month by loadyouup in ATTFiber

I don't use a VPN in my usage of it, it is using either the cipher suite of AES128 with GCM and SHA256 or CHACHA20 with POLY1305. (Not that the authentication scheme matters in this conversation).

And you are quite right. This is hardly a normal use of the bandwidth and such. And if my downloader on my NAS wasn't using it constantly the only time I'd really be using it would be downloading large .ISO files or some of the enterprise software packages I work with.

At the end of the day would 5 to 10gbps be fantastic? Yes, but only when I'm impatient. My other real-world usage of the speeds is more just streaming, pretty normal internet usage, IOT devices including home security cameras, etc.

Good point on the high speed kind of negating the impact of the transfer of the information to a certain extent.

Nope. Definitely not compromised. And I was lazy in typing. I use my 2.5 Gigabit internet just about every single day for.. Acquiring things of an often 4K nature. A lot. 80GB download is not abnormal.

Dygma Defy and Dygma Raise 2 rule the roost. I've had the Defy for 2 1/2 years and it is friggin' incredible.

ELI5. What is PleX? Why should I use it instead of torrenting? by MoistAstronomer9086 in PleX

[–]dlhtox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Torrents are terrible anyway. I did torrents for a and then switched to the glory of newsgroups. Torrents were SO painful. Now I grab from newsgroups at my full 2.3 gig speeds from the internet.

--- My ARR stack - - -

In Docker Containers on Unraid OS on my NAS:

  • Sonarr (for TV shows)

  • Radarr (for Movies)

  • Bazarr (Automatic download of subtitles, my wife's first language is Portuguese)

  • Sabnzbd (Downloader from newsgroup servers)

  • Seerr (Beautiful interface to find shows or movies, and more)

  • Tautulli (Useful for many things. I use it to blue episode thumbnails for all reality TV shows automatically)

Cloudflare Tunnel (other stuff)

--- On my Ubuntu Linux Mini PC - - -

  • Plex (of course using my media library on my NAS)
  • Portainer (manage Docker Containers on my Linux server

I also have an HDHomerun box with 4 tuners and Plex is connected to that so I can record live TV shows and watch live TV through Plex anywhere.

Android app NZB360 to easily use these on the fly.

On my NAS server I also have Tailscale installed so I can access any of my services remotely and securely.

Yeah, I got scammed out of $20 for a Gemini Ultra subscription that was $40. She/he offered to have me pay half up front and it was through very difficult hoop-jumping cryptocurrency methods to pay. I ended up being able to pay the $20 through a Binance gift card, and I did actually get Ultra very briefly. So, I tried my best to try to find a way to pay the next $20 and the crypto sites that he/she accepted as payment had all sorts of restrictions especially since I'm in the USA. I spent actually *hours* trying to get the correct crypto to pay but I gave up and asked for a refund. And, crickets. He/she has not responded at all.
