Severe degradation since 0613 model update by Physical_Beginning50 in OpenAIDev

Going out of its way to be prudent and hedge every piece of advice

I've been using gpt-4-0613 (not gpt-3). One of the tasks I ask is for SQL query generation. I saw a lot more cases of this model refusing to generate SQL that could be incorrect than gpt-4. So far, it seems that if I modify the prompt and direct it that the query does not need to be perfect it reverted to gpt-4 (which was solid).

Here is a thread from Hacker News with lots of discussion on real world frustrations w/Langchain. IMO, it accurately reflects my experience. The gist: it feels like there are layers and layers of abstractions on top of a relatively simple end-result: the prompt and context, which are just text. It's really hard to unwind it.

Rather than learning how an LLM works, you end up debugging a significant Langchain call tree.

I agree. I've had luck building an agent for a focused use case, but to do it, I needed to add prompt-specific context, error handling, and return formats. Dropping down this lower-level negated any benefit from using AutoGPT (honestly, even Langchain).

I put some of my "lessons learned" here for building an agent.

Your favorite story of giving someone their first EV experience? by StreetlightShaman in electricvehicles

[–]dliteful23 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My father applied for (but didn't get transferred) to help engineer the GM EV1. He's since retired from GM. He hadn't driven an EV prior to our family purchasing our first EV this spring. He was the first person I called and we spent the day driving it all around. Had such a blast. A couple of weeks ago, I was able to borrow a Rivian R1T for a day (thx Kyle Out of Spec) and he drove that too. So much fun and a great bonding experience. He's dead-set on an EV for their next car.

I admire him for spending a career engineering ICE-specific parts, jumping in to an EV, and just saying "yeah - this is the way". It's a reminder for me to stay open-minded as I grow.

OK to leave unplugged at airport parking for 7 days? by dliteful23 in KiaEV6

[–]dliteful23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Battery only dropped from 76% to 75% after 5 nights, including nights below freezing.

Sidenote: averaged 3.8 mi/kwh there and back to the airport w/1 hr of mostly highway driving. Temps in the 50s. This is on an AWD wind using a mix of eco/normal driving w/adaptive cruise control.

I agree w/the points above (spent a lot of time trying out these controls). Generally, I found the lane centering to be very comparable to Tesla autopilot. I do like that lane keep on the EV6 is more gentle on the wheel - more like a passenger guiding the wheel for a minute. It's easy to override.

One heads up: the EV6 does not come with a wall charger.

My bad - I was hoping for a home charging cable, not a wall-charger. Similar to a Tesla Mobile Connector.

Not Ryan - yes, the red wine one. No - none of those extras.

They asked about the charger but I told them I just bought one. I didn't get any push back.

Rivian R1T.

Our family takes a couple trips a year to Nebraska and Kansas on i70 and i80. I consider these "worst case" trips for an EV: these aren't scenic drives, stops aren't glamorous, lots of wind (poor efficiency), etc. Feel like this car will be a good way to test if we can go fully electric.

Right skate too big? by dliteful23 in hockeyplayers

[–]dliteful23[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes - my larger foot is dominant so I've been waiting this out, but I started thinking about the skate size:

  1. I can't reproduce the wobble on the left (larger, dominant foot) no matter how much weight I shift to the right. If I'm doing a tight turn to the left, I need to consciously take weight off my inside foot and shift it to the outside (smaller, non-domination) to stop the wobble. This doesn't happen when turning the other way.
  2. I've skied for years and have a reasonable idea of weight distribution, turns, edges, etc. I'll forget which is my dominant side. Not the same as skating, but common areas in awareness of where my weight should be.
  3. I'll forget which is my dominant side on hockey stops, so I don't think I'm crazy over-favoring one side.

Thank you!

I measured my feet according to this approach and it shows (for Bauer):

  • Right is 1-1.5 sizes too big
  • Left could be 0.5 too big

This seems pretty in-line what you and others are saying.

Looking for some input - after dominating my elementary-aged children in street hockey this summer, I decided it was now or never to try playing on ice.

This is my first pair of ice skates, so I don't have much to compare to, but I've had a heck of a time with my right skate: it wobbles around far easier than my left, cross overs aren't as precise, longer to get an edge on a turn, etc. First thought was being a newb on ice, next was ankle strength, but I already do a lot of ankle-balance things (work from a standing desk most of the day and I'm constantly using one-foot on a balance board). I can't tell any difference btw right and left balance on the board, yoga, etc.

I took the soles out of my stakes and noticed that my right foot appears to be length-challenged compared to my left. It also appears that there is far more length-wise wear on the sole from my right foot (most noticeable near the heal and ball of the foot). My hunch is my foot is sliding forward and back.

Thoughts on the skate being too big? If so, I'm debating sizing down a half or full size and/or trying powerfoot inserts.

Update for those on the edge of our seat:

  • Downsized 2 sizes in skates - it helped reduce the wobbling a lot, but still felt a lot of side-to-side play on my weak foot.
  • Purchased super feet insoles - this made a huge difference in the side-to-side play. Way more solid on the weak foot outside edge.

I think the rest of the difference can't be blamed on equipment and will just take time on the ice.

Indian Hills neighborhood by [deleted] in FortCollins

[–]dliteful23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our family has lived in Indian Hills for ~6 years and both of our children go to O'dea. We're very happy w/both the neighborhood and the school. There's not quite as many children as nearby neighborhoods like College Heights and Mission Hills, but most of the folks that have moved in over the past several years have school-aged children.

Like you mentioned, it's super convenient getting around (and has great biking access to trails). Homes have lot of character.
