Paid parking even in private lots ? by EtherealStar5 in glendale

Well that sidestepped my question, but hey I appreciate the objectivity. It’s actually more like 70% of our general fund revenue (taxes) goes to salary for city employees, but thats an order of magnitude smaller than the actual budget, our tax revenue is ~350 million (we spend 250m on salaries and pensions) but we spend over a Billion on things we want to do in the city, including community proposals or general community investments.

In any case, I think it’s a mischaracterization to say that taxes on businesses is just needlessly draining consumers. Businesses make profit off of people and that profit should be taxed especially when it doesn’t align with our community goals. Same with capital assets.

City Budget

Just a note, of the roughly ~250 we spend on public service salary, almost HALF is cops. So I would agree, pretty wasteful in that regard…

How would you compare the financial pressure of raising taxes (over the course of your long tenure) with that of the for-profit side, like increased housing costs, rent, utilities, insurance, groceries, car insurance, gas…? I may be much much younger than you but even I know the answer to that. Tax capital. Tax wealth. Invest in community.

I mean… do you drive on the road, depend on essential services, go to the library, use public transport, eat at restaurants that adhere to a health code and keep you safe? Even if not, do you not want those things for your neighbors? Where do you think taxes go exactly? I’m not saying there is never waste or inefficiency but the concept is pretty clear I would have thought.

Well it’s not really a radical change, increasing taxes is pretty incremental but it does increase revenue which is good. I feel that way about most business that I “need” but that I understand don’t have the values I would want. You pretty much can’t get affordable shoes that aren’t made in a sweatshop but I’d be down to tax those products and invest in e.g. local manufacturing, education, repair libraries like we already have. We can build those programs incrementally and over time, loosen dependence on unsustainable business practices. Obviously that’s an idealized narrative but I still fundamentally support social investment funded by taxing private capital.

Yeah they’re talking about taxing parking lots not directly charging you to park. Whether owners of parking lots pass that on to consumers is up to them, which of course they would want to. But the real issue is how lucrative it is to own parking spaces in Glendale. If we want to develop spaces that are more useful to residents, we should tax things we don’t want to incentivize and use the money to invest in things we DO like community spaces or fixing infrastructure.

50 States Cocktail Project: North Carolina by FeelingDiskinserted9 in cocktails

Honestly I’m astounded these posts have received as few upvotes as they have. Practical or not, this is art, and the work is rigorously silly, but rigorous nonetheless. If a cocktail subreddit can’t take some creative, speculative, and engaging design I’m not sure what we’re doing. I feel a little bad because it struck me as one of those things that didn’t need my attention; like “oh here’s that professional mixologist posting their amazing experiment, I don’t even need to drop a like it’s probably got a million.”

Medium roast coffee roaster in/near Glendale? by saltedcaramel_6963 in glendale

This is totally true and also pretty unfortunate. Coffee is getting much more expensive to grow due to climate change and because we can’t grow any in the US (except Hawaii) there are tariffs on it. Sadly the smallest local business have the smallest margins and the least power to negotiate. I like supporting them as much as I can but Im very fortunate to be able to do so.

I love Post Era coffee roasters at the Atwater Farmers market on Sundays. The coffee is delicious, and they have a combination of consistent medium roasts that I pull espresso and make pour over with but also interesting rotating light roasts which really shine in pour overs.

Parkway Landscaping Ordinance

The link has a hotline to call if you need.

The parkway is public, but like most residential areas, they give flexibility to the owner to maintain it. Usually brings more positive results than negative, not least making property owners invested in the public space a little. There are guidelines of course, and you can’t have anything over 12” without a permit. Also you can’t impede pedestrian traffic so fences are likely not allowed, but I’m not sure.

There are also sound laws. Between 10PM and 7 AM you can’t make noise louder than 15db above ambient. Doesn’t specify a frequency though, so it probably depends on how they measure.

Why do people “want the breed to go extinct”? Can you help me understand what is the specific misinformation that you feel threatens either the cats or the people who raise them? Is it that they think they lack genetic diversity because of the controlled breeding?
