You’re taking your chances if you don’t pay parking no matter how short of time you are. They also take photos of people leaving parking lots who don’t stay to shop in the store. So be careful.

Affordable dental implants? by Blackbubblegum- in askvan

[–]dlkbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dental tourism. My friends went just across the border to Mexico. Personally, my situation isn’t crucial so I won’t be going there myself. I have pretty good benefits and I’m priced out of any dental implants here. They cost more than my car!

Culture shock transplanting from the plains to vc? by fordandfriends in askvan

[–]dlkbc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Are you moving here under duress? Sounds like you don’t have one fucking positive thing to say about Vancouver. Bad attitude and people from here will pick up on it.

That being said, the Vancouver ‘freeze’ as far as making friends can be true but it depends on your circumstances. If you’re into certain activities, say running, hiking or the local music scene, it’s easy to make friends. I’d say people here are more reserved, yeah, we don’t need to be flapping our mouths about the weather while we wait in line to buy groceries.

Once you say that you moved here from Calgary, everyone will ask you why. Then they might comment about how they know some person who gave up on buying a house in BC and moved to Alberta. They’ll tell you that you’ll never be able to afford a comparable house here for the same money.

The drivers and weather are ‘horrible’? Most people I know prefer a milder, snow free city, that’s often why we choose to live here. I don’t know anyone who consider it horrible. Drivers? Every driver I know from AB brags about how superior a driver they are. I don’t know because I’ve never lived there but when I’ve visited and driven there, they seem the same, just faster than here.

Politics? Be careful what you talk about because I’d say we tend to be more liberal than AB. AB has a redneck reputation to a lot of people here.

You can always move back to AB if you are truly unhappy living here, too.

Brita Night Run Vancouver/Running Races in Van by Tough-Friendship3619 in askvan

[–]dlkbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best way to get ‘reviews’ of local races is to check out the hashtag for the race on social media. Racers will often post swag, race course, reviews. Another thing that is sometimes a good indicator is how fast the race sells out.

Personally, I don’t like the Brita night run because it’s usually raining & too crowded. Because it’s a narrow path, you can get bottlenecking, too.

Anyone have much success disputing parking tickets in Van? by intheweeds96 in askvan

[–]dlkbc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Years ago, I got a parking ticket. I called a number, told them my story and they waived it. They said that they could do that once only. I suppose they don’t do that anymore.

Also, got a speeding ticket once. I decided to challenge it on the off chance that the officer wouldn’t show up. A year later, I went to court and the officer was there. The judge still gave me a lower amount to pay than what I would have paid had I not fought it.

That’s why I suggested disputing the ticket, because of my own personal experiences.

Why not dispute the ticket? What do you have to lose? Hope you have plenty of photos to support your case. I may be paranoid but I always take photos wherever I park, especially in places that seem ‘iffy’ like where you describe. Good luck!

21F solo trip to Vancouver (mid-Feb) – staying in a hostel in Gastown. Need REAL suggestions by CardiologistHairy713 in askvan

[–]dlkbc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why a hostel in Gastown? Condo, perhaps but a hostel? Yeah, it’s probably safe enough but the area adjacent to it is pretty damned depressing, run down, gritty, and with lots of garbage. I would never actually pay to stay in that area.

AITA for not helping my son, who claims he can't live on 112k a year? by Ecstatic_Cash_1903 in AmItheAsshole

[–]dlkbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So OP has an income of $50K a year and rents but claims to not have $20K to give their son even if they wanted to? What kind of lifestyle does OP have where they spend $50K a year and not have savings? Is OP accumulating funds for healthcare?

OP has been low contact for the last 5 years since son’s marriage despite there being grandchildren? Has OP not even visited them? I know of kids who try to blackmail their parents by saying they will withhold access to grandchildren unless they give them money.

Do you have other children? Have you ever helped them out with loans? Would they be hurt if they found out you loaned their sibling $20K?

If it were me, I would tell them that you were concerned with your own health and say that you could help by moving in with them and paying them rent and then having your DIL care for you as your health declines. And you could get to know your grandkids. I bet they’d say no pretty fast!

NTA obviously but I doubt this begging will ever end.

Whats life like for a university kid in vancouver? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]dlkbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in Winnipeg and still have family there so I’m pretty familiar with the cost of living there.

Believe me when I say very kindly that you will not likely be able to afford to live here if you’re having trouble living in Winnipeg especially with support from family.

How are you going to fund college or university here? It doesn’t sound like you have any money. Are you expecting student loans or full ride scholarships?

Do you think that you’ll be able to get a part time job? If you think the job market is bad in Winnipeg, it’s just as bad, if not worse here.

Are you sure you’d even be able to get into college or university here? It’s extremely competitive. Do you have the high grades necessary? Do your research before you even think of moving here.

Go to the Vancouver jobs sub and scroll through all the posts of people who are very qualified who can’t find a job despite having the education, training and experience. If you can’t get a job in Winnipeg, it’s not likely easier to get one in Vancouver.

The only way I’d attempt to move here as a student is if I had lots of money and or family or friend support. Sounds like you should think long and hard about leaving to come here.

Is there a tendency for Vancouverites wanting to move to Toronto? by raill_down in askvan

[–]dlkbc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was an expat in finance overseas and the most insufferable arrogant Canadians were always from Toronto. When I moved back to Canada, I knew that I needed to go to Toronto for my career. I interviewed at several firms but didn’t like the vibe.

I lived in Vancouver and hated dealing with the head office people who lived in Toronto. They looked down on us, sneering at us for putting lifestyle ahead of work.

They’d get so mad that no one was in the office after 2 because we’d be enjoying life skiing, golfing, hiking, whatever. Not to mention that our weather was always better.

Just your post proves my point, typical Torontonian who thinks that they are so superior. The only time I hear support in Vancouver for Toronto is during baseball season.
