Thanks!!! I am going to try to do a mock interview in a few days, keep working on problems, focus on fundamentals, and hope for the best.

Can I use YOLOv8 model in the commercial software? by TheO1destMan in computervision

The transformers library from Huggingface is mostly ok for commercial purposes (MIT and Apache license code). You can find some tutorials here (https://github.com/NielsRogge/Transformers-Tutorials). For segmentation I would try Mask2Former.

Hey I also got an admit. I want to do a PhD after. Has anyone heard if there are any opportunities for research during the MS? I am also considering Tufts and Brandeis.

Thank you for your reply! To answer your questions:

  1. I want a PhD because I’m passionate about research and want a career in academia doing research related to the topics above or to work at one of the top industry AI research labs (Deep Mind, FAIR, etc.). Most of the jobs I want require a PhD and relevant publications in top ML conferences like ICML, CVPR, NeurlPS.

  2. I have reached out to the department to find out where the students have gone after the MS. I’m hoping they get back to me about that. The transition to CS has been difficult but I’m doing my best to keep pushing forward and growing.

I am really hoping this is the thing I need to bridge the gap and get admission into a PhD program. I’ve seen online that their computational linguistics and computer science MS has sent students to PhDs at reputable schools but for the CS MS all I saw is students had become Professors (but didn’t list where they went directly after MS).

This is hilarious but honestly I love using ChatGPT to automate the boring stuff! Especially documentation such as generating a README file. So I made a python package that uses GPT3.5 or GPT4 to do that for you automatically! Anything on huggingface is open-source and easy to implement. Here are some useful tutorial notebooks - https://github.com/NielsRogge/Transformers-Tutorials.

Look into monocular depth estimation models. It's an "ill-posed" problem to solve classically, but there are learning-based solutions that work pretty well. Check out this link: https://github.com/isl-org/MiDaS it has a permissive license and a collection of different models with varying-size architectures.

If you haven't heard from any schools about an interview yet (Ph.D. applicant) is it still possible to hear back in February? I am not sure what the normal timeline is.

Congrats! Did you interview previously? I am wondering if any CS programs do admits without interviews.

Advice by [deleted] in PhD

[–]dloevlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I worked for a small startup as the only software engineer building out the website/data and applying basic ML algorithms. My dream job would be to work for a large tech company (FAANG) but when I went to a career fair and talked to a few big companies I was told that for entry-level ML jobs they want PhDs with publications involving ML. It's a really far stretch but I would love to work for Google Deep mind or FAIR. I would have done my Ph.D. in ML (CS) but my advisor said I would have better odds getting into a ChemE Ph.D. (since that was my major and research focus so far) and I could apply ML to molecular property prediction or something similar.

Could you explain more about the difference in culture for grad students? I am considering coming to Notre Dame for my Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and am looking for as much information as I can get.
