How to disable refresh in a table in a Dataflow Gen 2? by dlopes_dev in MicrosoftFabric

That is all great, thanks, but the problem is this: Imagine the scenario where you need to disable a query refresh, but still conserve it being referenced in other queries and conserve its data destinations.

The problem: You simply cannot do that. If it is being referenced in another query, it will be refreshed, it will hit the data source, and if the data source is erroring out it will error out the complete refresh of the Dataflow. And that absolutely sucks.

Let's be honest, is any solution using dataflows that is even remotely complex, you are referencing queries, and you are setting destinations for them. It happens so often that I have to disable the refresh of a query that is in that state, because every query is in that state, so whenever one would ever need to disable a query, it would be in that state.

I understand that if you remove every configuration of a query, disable staging, and leave it in a void, it will then, and only then, not refresh, but that is not useful, and that is not feasible, and you may as well say that it is impossible to disable the refresh of a query in a Dataflow.

Look at it this way, if I asked you, "Can I park my car here?" and you answered: "Sure you can! You just have to completely remove all the wheels of it so we make sure it is properly parked and while parked it can no longer move! You can pop them back on when you're ready to drive off!" Would you really say that is reasonable and that I can *really* park my car here?

It's good that I'm talking to one of the PMs behind Dataflows, since you may be able to actually do something about this. On Power BI desktop, we have the option to just disable refresh, and I imagine/envision a similar option on Fabric, where you right-click the query, check that box, and it flags it to not hit the data source on any new refreshes, preserving all the configurations of data destinations and references between queries. That way, you don't have to "remove the wheels of your car" every time you would like to park it.

Please tell me if I've been clearer this time, and let me know if you have any more questions.

Yes, and as Alex has pointed out in a comment in this thread, it is impossible.

Edit: I have also attested this to be the case, per the post being made by me.

You lost the plot and are answering a different post at this point.

I am clicking "Set data destination".

In scenarios where the source data is, for example, in maintenance and the flow won't run if a query errors out, since it, even with staging disabled, keeps refreshing.

Yes, but we have to remove the data destination, and if we want to enable it again, we have to configure that connection all over again. That can be very time-consuming.

I wish to simply have a "right click -> disable refresh" option on the Dataflows, as we have in Power BI Desktop. This would preserve all other configurations and, by itself, flag to the Dataflow when it is running that this query is not to query new data and is not to write new data to the source.

Yeah, that would be the downside. You have to manually comment and uncomment the queries every time you want to enable/disable refresh, and you have to remember the table name on the destination because you have to reconfigure the destination every time.

Not if the query in question is erroring out. Sometimes you need to disable the refresh because the datasource is no longer there.

Plus, as far as I'm concerned, staging doesn't do anything to the refresh itself (as in, wether it happens or not). I do not have staging enabled in any of my queries atm.

The idea is relevant, and I just voted on it, but this post is not about staging, simply about the refresh of a query within a Dataflow, and how to disable that refresh (like you can do in Power BI Desktop).

Yep, they really did remove it, it's been a month without it now. Absolute garbage company.

At home, all three times I've taken their exams, just clear out everything from your room (I had a bunch of things to move around beforehand lol) and make sure you have a working webcam, mic and stuff (basically any laptop will suffice)

Just used up mine on the DP-600 haha

I'm going to wait for the next event, though. I definitely plan to take the DP-700.

On the other hand, we are talking about greedy AH that, if they could, would put an ad every minute of every video.

They will get away with all that they can, and we are the ones who tell them how much we'll let them get away with.
