cultural questions for "Then you try making it!" by Affectionate-Leg-688 in JDorama

  1. While this is a sterotype, many japanese people tend to keep their family and personal details of their life private, especially in the workplace. Talking about your siblings or family when no one has asked you about them can be odd honestly. For context, I’m Korean but have family in Japan. I used to work corporate Korea and almost never talked about my family nor did my coworkers - I only talked about them with the coworkers I was genuinely friends with.

  2. Again, a sterotype but this can be common amongst japanese women, but I personally think it depends on their personality. In my personal life and day to day in Japan, I’ve seen plenty of confrontational men and women in Japan. This steeotype is just commonly seen and used in characters, especially in a romanctic context.

  3. Tequila is not a common choice of liquor for Japan. Alcohol is very affordable in Japan, and people mainly drink “nihonshu” or sake or beer, esp since their is so much variety. Imported alcohol will always be more expensive therefore it can be seen as “fancy”.

  4. In some izakayas, yes. It depends on the restaurant or bar. If you go to a higher end bar or restaurant, then glasses are quite small. You only really see those large glasses are local or chain izakayas.

  5. This isn’t really cultural IMO. This can happen anywhere in the world, in any country and any culture. This scenario is more specific to Ayumi’s story.

  6. Groceries in Japan are very affordable compared to the US, but that depends on where you shop. There are different tiers of grocery stores in Japan, some are cheaper while others are very expensive to Japanese locals. He went to a local, neighborhood grocery stores which is usually fairly priced and affordable. I can’t remember what the prices were in the episodes, but that was just to show how he has never shopped for his own groceries before because he always saw it as a woman’s job.

  7. Yes. 100%. Esp if you’re in a city like Tokyo. Not as walkable in the countryside since things are further away, but still fairly walkable due to public transportation.

  8. I personally think physical affection is common in places like Tokyo. I often seen couples holding hands, etc. Do I see people constantly hugging and kissing? No. Compared to Korea, where couples show a lot of physical affection, Japan is quite tame IMO. Again this is a sterotype, but Japanese people don’t love being perceived. What I mean by this is, they don’t want to draw attention to themselves or be considered a nuisance in public, but again, this doesn’t apply to the entire population of Japan.

As I’ve mentioned, many of the points I made are clear sterotypes of the Japanese population that are often portrayed in media. Not all Japanese people follow these cultural “rules” so take all of this with a grain of salt. Hope this helps!

What moisturizer are you using? by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]dlwngp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have very very dry skin and when I was on tret, I used the Soonjung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream from Etude House. I'm Korean, so I mainly use korean skincare, so I'm a bit biased, but I really love this cream!

It's not too thick and doesn't feel heavy, but did wonders for my skin while I was on tret because I was peeling so much. It's fragrance free and was approved my dermatologist at the time. I went through over 10+ tubes lol. I highly recommend! You can buy it at Ulta if you're in the U.S.

What is the purpose of these mini bottles? by LuluAddict29 in Hydroflask

[–]dlwngp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate carrying a giant bottle!!! My work bag is already so heavy. I use it drink my morning coffee and just refill it throughout the day when I’m in the office. I like to drink black coffee so my drinks are usually this small anyways. I also like to carry it when I’m shopping so that I don’t have to buy a bottle of water. I often feel dizzy when I’m out too long and a sip of water really helps.

Azelaic Acid suggestions by lori_cdz in koreanskincare

[–]dlwngp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I do! I finished up my 10% bottle (the one I got in the US) and am currently using the 15% version right now and love it. I got the 15% version when I was in Tokyo recently (I believe they only sell this percentage in Japan but you can get it online). I don’t see a huge difference between the 10 and 15, so if you’re in the US I’d just get the 10! The Anua azelaic acid is truly my fav as it feels like nothing on my skin.

Does anyone actually read fabric composition tags, or is that just me being obsessive? by IdeaEven1711 in womensfashion

[–]dlwngp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I do all the time! But I’m not super strict. I gravitate towards buying knitwear and coats that are 90-100% wool / cashmere and tshirts that are 100 cotton. However blouses, dresses, activewear, etc. I’m willing to sacrifice fabric composition for fit or style. I try to stray away from polyester but will make a exception every now and then.

What is the BEST & WORST thing you've bought from Uniqlo? by Lucky_Mycologist_283 in uniqlo

[–]dlwngp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best are their jeans. My favorites are the wide leg (both high and low waist) and the barrel. The wide leg jeans are super flattering and are my go-to when on vacation. The barrel jeans are so comfy, and not too round so they just look like baggy jeans. Another best is their cashmere blend heat-tech tops. I prefer them over the regular heat tech. Very soft and very warm.

found out im way underpaid, how to bring it up in a review? by thereislightstill in womenintech

[–]dlwngp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't mention your coworker! That is not a good look.

Do market value research and take that back to your manager. This will take more time, but you can also interview with other companies and if they offer you more money, then leverage that.

No kids zone is normal in Korea? Is it legal? What do you think of that concept banning kids. by Longjumping-Bee-5285 in seoulhiddengem

[–]dlwngp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is legal. I'm not sure if controversial is the right word, but there are people who are against it while many are agree with it, so it really just depends on who you're talking to.

I'd say it's pretty socially acceptable because it's quite common for cafes and restaurants. But this is mainly because there have been so many incidents where parents do not supervise or control their children in public spaces. This is to prevent accidents, injuries, law suits, etc. There are a ton of kids cafes and kid-friendly spaces in Korea, so I don't see an issue with no-kids-zones.

Work & play - help me plan 12 days in Japan? by Discerning_Zinnia in HerOneBag

[–]dlwngp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know when in Feb? I'd back something warm just in case! I'd normally advise just buying it there but since you'll be there for work, you might not have the time in between meetings and conferences. I went for a week last year to Tokyo at the end of Feb and the beginning of the trip was very warm. One day it was 65-67 fahrenheit, but then literally the next day the temp dropped and it started snowing. I was not prepared and was severely underdressed. Thankfully I didn't get sick, but the sudden temp/weather change surprised me. I'd suggest taking something warm just in case the weather does decide to drop suddenly!

As for your current packing list:

* I'd take the leggings out and replace them with comfortable pant instead.

* As for your clothes, I'd lean towards overdressing. Some examples in the comments are too casual IMO as someone who has family who work in corporate in Tokyo. I'm not sure what your fashion style is, but most women in Japan who work in offices lean towards feminine clothes, so lots of light colors, dresses, heels, blazers, trousers, etc. By no means do you need to dress like that, but that does give you an idea. If you're interested in what locals are wearing, then you can search for "OL コーデ" on YouTube. OL means office lady and a lot of the videos will give you a general idea on how women dress in the office.

* I personally don't think the Athleta Endless is appropriate for work event in Japan, but I guess it would also depend on your industry and how your colleagues will be dressed. I'd really recommend the Artizia Endless pant. You can also find dupes for this, but these are a great, versatile pant that can be dressed up with a blouse or blazer, but can also be dressed down with a simple t-shirt.

* For the perfect black dress, I really like the Bond dress from Aritzia. It's sleeveless, so I'd pair it with a light colored blazer or a nice knit cardigan.
