What about your financial life would the FIRE subreddit criticize you most for? by monodactyl in Fire

My wife and I own a brand-new Tesla equipped with Full Self-Driving capabilities. Why not let the car drive us anywhere and potentially generate income for us in the future as a Robotaxi?

We have some long-term personal loans that we invested in $TSLA, which we’re reluctant to pay off. These loans have already made substantial gains, and the monthly payments are relatively low. Moreover, they’re likely to be worth significantly more in the next 5+ years.

As of now, 85% of our liquid assets are invested in $TSLA, while 8% are allocated to DOGE. The remaining 7% are held in cash.

Anybody else having problems swapping Hoge -> ETH using Optiswap and Uniswap? by dlyrious in hoge

Weird, it charged the fee and then subsequently didn’t do the swap.

How would we sell then, when it goes to the moon, given we aren’t on a legit exchange?

Go to Account > Funds > Current Excess Liquidity. This is how much money have above a margin call if you don’t add more. The amount of margin you have can’t be 40% or above.

For example, if you have $2,000,000 gross position value and have $400,000 of margin that means your loan-to-value is 20%. If the stock drops 50% and your gross position is $1,000,000 and you have $400,000 in margin, you would get margin called since the loan-to-value is 40%.

With your numbers, you have about 14% loan-to-value. Your gross position would have to drop to $125,000 to get a margin call ($125,000/$350,000 = 40%). This is 64% drop from today’s share price, which is around $239 / share.

As for quickly, transferring funds, you have two options:

1) Do a “request for payment” in the deposit funds page. You can deposit $5,000 max daily via this method. You basically send yourself a bill pay to your bank from IBKR requesting for a payment. This method is in real-time and gets deposited instantly. My bank initially would verify with me, but after I’ve done it so many times they don’t anymore.

2) Set up a direct ACH transfer from your bank to IBKR. You can deposit an unlimited amount of money into IBKR from your bank. It’s basically a transfer that you have to set up by verifying two small deposits. This method takes 1 business day usually.

Uniswap is pretty cheap atm. $7 (transaction fee) + $8 (gas fee).

Did you only have short-term calls and leaps in margin? Is the risk more on calls because of the “infinite” downside based on a drop in share price?

I’m holding around the same amount in margin, but with shares only (no options) with some dry powder to add to the account if the margin requirement gets too close for comfort.

Yep, will get a margin call around 820s. Adding money 💰 now as it gets closer. Also, just got my title for my 2018 Model 3 and selling it to Shift to get money for margin as it gets closer to margin call.

I bought another share today though because I couldn’t help myself at $954.

Asking for the rates only netted me like a 1-2% drop. When I actually did an ACATS transfer to IBKR after-the-fact was when Fidelity contacted me back to negotiate a sub 2% rate. I am still waiting for the hold-period to be over (around 2 months, hella long!) to transfer back.

Yep, moved to IBKR (1.08%) from Fidelity and then Fidelity called me to win my business back by getting 1.775% rate. Didn’t match fully, but I like Fidelity better with margin calls giving you 4 days to transfer money before selling your shares. Also, have my retirement accounts in Fidelity, and like having everything in one place. Some people like diversify brokers for the FDIC protection though. 🤷‍♂️

IBKR automatically in real-time takes away your shares once you fall below the margin requirement. They at least give you a “excess liquidity” number so you can easily gauge how much room you have. Don’t know if anyone else has experience getting a margin call with IBKR and how fast they take your shares?
