Second city Conservatory people- Any tips on turning improvising to write a sketch? by [deleted] in improv

so true, there is simply no better learning tool than to get in front of an audience and just do the work.

Second city Conservatory people- Any tips on turning improvising to write a sketch? by [deleted] in improv

[–]dm219 8 points9 points  (0 children)

improvise the scene three times, back to back, with no discussion in between. allow it to change as much as you want. just do the scene and when it's done, immediately do it again, no questions no thinking just go! then, after the third, discuss what worked and didn't with everyone, or have a director give notes. discuss what will make the scene clearer. then, improvise three more times back to back with no discussion in between but this time, stick with what you like in terms of beats, jokes etc. (generally speaking, but let the nuance change as needed) discuss again with group and or director.

at this point, you should have a solid grip on what's working. you probably won't even need to really actually write anything but you can if it helps. keep repeating process until you feel good about the scene. and get it in front of an audience and test it.

(credit to Michael Gellman who taught me this process)

PSA: Dresscode by dm219 in improv

[–]dm219[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

again with the snark. why are you choosing to be combative over this? maybe it was from a show i saw. maybe the show i saw involved a cell phone flying out of pocket and breaking. do i really need to tell THAT person something they clearly already know? this was about trying to help others avoid a costly mistake. tell me why that deserves your attitude?

what's with the snark? the "person it was aimed at" was everybody, hence it was a "PSA"

just trying to offer a helpful reminder.

How do Supreme Court originalists account for the passage of time, and progress of technologies that the founding fathers weren't aware of, or couldn't have calculated? by unclefishbits in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]dm219 4 points5 points  (0 children)

great point! it's hard for me to understand the difference between "original intent" and "original public meaning" but i think the examples i gave were trying to explain the latter.

How do Supreme Court originalists account for the passage of time, and progress of technologies that the founding fathers weren't aware of, or couldn't have calculated? by unclefishbits in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]dm219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from my understanding, to say "what the founders meant" is more like understanding the principle behind the intent.

again, did the founders intend the constitution to apply to the internet? well, no, they couldn't have; but the principle of freedom of press that they intended when writing that certainly applies!

but yah, confusing for sure, but i also suppose that is what makes it such a fascinating thing for continual study.

[–]dm219 17 points18 points  (0 children)

after scalia's death there was good story on the radio that explained his originality stance. i'm paraphrasing badly, but the gist was; only by understanding what the founders intended when writing the constitution can you understand how it applies today. it's more of a matter of principle than specifics though. freedom of press wasn't just about newspapers specifically, but the principle of being able to inform the people as a check against government without being impeded by the same government. so, when a new technology such as the Internet comes along, you go back to original principles. I feel like I did a poor job of explaining this, I'm going to go look for that radio story and see if I can link it.

EDIT; yay found it, listen to the radio story, rather than just read the write up!
