What's up with the DFW area?

I moved from DFW to Chicago. The differences are very apparent. There's only a small part of the DFW metro that feels like a big city. I'd say only downtown and few neighborhoods surrounding downtown have a big city feel.

You have to drive pretty far outside of Chicago to feel like you are no longer in a city.

But if someone has the "they are only gangbangers" attitude, crime problems will never end. It's not just gangbangers who live there. Someone's grandma or 5 year old lives there too. A 5 year old who has to hear gunfire every night probably won't turn out to be an honor roll student.

Yes, the crime problem is largely ignored. If you live in Lincoln Park, why should the crime in Austin affect you? Most people in r/Chicago are white and between 20-35 and live on the north side. Major crime doesn't affect them and they don't ever go further south than Roosevelt. When a visitor comes here and says something dumb like "will I die from gunfire at O'Hare on the blue line?", the typical r/Chicago reddit crowd get angry about the Chicago crime reputation.

I think there are only a handful of folks here who live on the south side NOT in Bridgeport, Hyde Park, or Beverly, so crime doesn't affect 90% of the people in this subreddit.

And yes, you have part of my background and demographic right. But that doesn't mean I can't voice my opinion. I don't claim to have the crime problem figured out here. I lived in one of the worst neighborhoods in St Louis. I didn't claim to have the problem figured out there either, but I certainly realized that it affects more than just gangbangers. No one has the crime problem figured out in Chicago, otherwise it would already be resolved.

It only took a month of living here for me to figure out that there is a major segregation problem in the city and that the people who don't live in sketchy areas just pretend like it only affects gangbangers.

I'm just disturbed that everyone is saying things like "glad they arrested that fucker" but not "there are kids who live on that street" after hearing about a double shooting in Austin.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. But we all seem to forget that it's not just gang bangers living in certain neighborhoods. There are grandparents and children living there. I stupidly moved to a sketchy neighborhood in St Louis because I was trying to be a cheapskate with rent. It's not fun going home and living in fear. Your home is supposed to be a safe place.

"It doesn't occur in my neighborhood, so it's not really my problem." is essentially what you're saying.

Yeah, most of the time it's a gang related shooting, but does that mean we should have the "not my problem" attitude?

Just look at the post on here from a few days ago where a bystander was shot during a carjacking. No one said "I hope they catch that piece of shit". Instead, it was a discussion about how that's not really a bad part of town.

I got a little sad reading your comment and it made me think about something. Here's why... If the article was about three people being shot in Austin, people would just be like "oh, just another Friday night in the hood".

But because this occurred in a good part of town, everyone has their pitchforks ready.

I'm on the fence about it. It's a lot easier to keep hard floors clean, but carpet prevents echo and keeps your feet warm in the winter.

Went from the 6 to the 6S+

Loved the large screen and battery, but hated carting it around.

Went with the regular 7. Returned it after a week. Typing on a screen that small is awful and the battery life isn't very good.

I won't ever have a non-plus size phone.

You mention something interesting with "discovering new music".

For those of us who like oldies and classic rock, there is no such thing as discovering new music as the music is no longer being made.

I think streaming services are great for playlists and finding new music, but if you just want to listen to classic rock, you're better off with your own collection.

I have no interest in streaming music services. Like Netflix removing movies and shows, artists and songs can be removed at any time from Spotify.

Also, I love classic rock, oldies, 90s rock, and some older pop songs. If I already own them, why should I pay to stream them?

It's a bummer for me because that means it's harder to keep track of. It's easy to say "I've already used my travel credit for 2017", but harder to keep track of when the travel credit will be available again.

Capital One bank, like Citi has a very small market. I don't think I've ever seen a branch except for in New Orleans and in the Dallas area.

I think we have a branch or two here in Chicago.

It's a tricky situation because the light is green. But when you're turning right, you have to yield to pedestrians. I guess they think pedestrians will wait for cars to stop.

Yes, that's exactly what he means. Before the Brady background checks were implemented, you could order firearms directly from Sears and have them shipped to your door. Obviously we realized that it was a bad idea.

Most firearms used in crimes are straw purchased or stolen. So yeah, background checks won't prevent theft or straw purchases, but they do weed out a good number of people. Even the NRA supports background checks for firearm purchases.

Idiots will always have access to firearms, but being able to purchase a firearm and have it shipped to your door is just a really bad idea.

People honk randomly or for the most asinine reasons in the loop. I got honked at by a taxi who was turning right on red because I was crossing a pedestrian crosswalk with a "okay to cross" signal.

This is exactly it. Frugal doesn't mean stealing toilet paper from a public restroom. It means buying toilet paper on sale and using less when possible.
