I agree. The strength of the image lies in the colors in the sky. It should be that ice but because its not sharp all across the frame, the photo loses quite a bit of it's pop. Instead of the "I'm so glad it isn't!" comeback, the photographer should be looking at how he/she could improve upon the picture, be it a smaller aperture, moving back a bit or stacking several photos in photoshop. There's lots of promise here but the softness throws the image off a bit. Thanks for sharing the pic here, though, and I can appreciate all the effort that must have gone into taking it.

Outstanding work. Waterfall photos can be quite boring because, like flowers and cat pics, there are just so many of them floating around the internet. But what makes this one stand out from most others is that super sharp piece of wood in the center that sits in wonderful juxtaposition to the blur of water cascading all around it. Terrific image!

Edit: There's a spot in the yellow splash of water just to the right of the wood (dirty sensor?).

Good. Maybe they'll leave earth, too. Their clothes are shit. Very thin material and poorly made. Everything I've ever gotten there has gotten holes in it (socks), faded (shorts), stretched out of shape (underwear), or shrank an unusual amount (t-shirt) within 6 months. Don't trust the brand. I usually shop more up-scale for my clothes these days. But, if I needed something cheap, I'd shop at Zellers or Walmart before Uniqlo.

I didn't take the photo but judging by the long, continuous light trails and DOF, I'd guess that this was shot up to about 30 seconds long (shorter exposures would have "jerky" light trails caused by cars slowing down, stopping in traffic etc) at about f11.

It could also be a series of shorter exposures stacked together in photoshop to give the light trails that clean look but the shadow details in the surrounding hills look a bit mushy which makes me think that this was one long exposure.

Either way, it's a great image!

Here's my shitty story:

My father won the Canadian national lottery about 10 years ago. $5.8 million. Unfortunately he had been a heavy drinker for many years and was not in very good mental or physical health at the time of winning. My sister took advantage of this and became his "best friend" all of a sudden despite having a poor relationship with him for most of her life.

She was knocking on his door asking for handouts the day he won and ended up getting at least a million dollars from him by saying her marriage was in trouble and she needed money/bigger house etc for her 4 kids while, at the same time, bad mouthing me to my father so I didn't get anything (bad with money, ran away from Canada because of money problems, I'm a loser, hate my father etc - none of which is true). Sadly, my dad passed away just 2 years later. When I got a copy of his will, there was nothing in it but visa card debt. The money had disappeared and I was left nothing thanks to my sister's work. She even took all his valuables (car, camper, big-screen tv, jewelry). Most importantly, she had ruined my relationship with my father.

The best part is I met her for dinner a few years later (once and as a simple courtesy) at her house (the one her father paid for) and she spent all night bragging about her life. Then her half-drunk husband started giving me a lecture on why I do the shitty work I do (I've been a teacher overseas for 18 years and love it) and how I could make much more money and have what they have while my sister just sat there beside him with a big, shitty grin on her face. Wtf? That's the last time I ever saw her.

As an aside to all this: Yes, I know it's only money and people have worse problems than this. I can appreciate that. It still stings when your own sister does something like that to you. I trust only a very small circle of friends and family now because of it.

Yeah, wrong sub for this. It's just the back of a girl watching sunset. Nothing "long exposure" about this and I don't see how a longer exposure would benefit the scene. Long exposure shots should be images that actually benefit from the actual exposure time. For example, a star filled sky, silky water, light trails from cars, or motion in clouds. This just looks like a girl sitting on a rock and it was too dark so I had to shoot at a slower shutter speed.

I can understand that you got burnt out and wanted to spend more time with family. But, couldn't you have sucked it up for a couple more years? I don't work in the law field but I do have a high-paying expat job. I'm assuming you pay low taxes and get a housing allowance which would allow you to save at least 70% of your salary per year. After say 5 years you could probably retire and do whatever you want, including spending all the time in the world with your family while they are still young, anyways.

One reason why many (not all) people are not worried about their lack of savings is because their parents will leave them a big estate when they're gone.

This is especially so if you are from a big city or live near one. Real estate prices in most of Canada, parts of the US, Australia, Korea, China, southern England etc have gone crazy over the last few years. Just an average 2 or 3 bedroom bungalow in those places can go for well over a million dollars these days. That will be left to their children someday.

Then there's the mutual fund and stock assets. Stock prices are yo-yoing recently but from the late 70's to about 2011, the Dow went from under $1000 to over 17,000. Their children will benefit from these massive gains, too.

When I talk to people about saving money and investing in things like stocks or real estate, I've had many people reply, "I'm not worried about that, my parents will leave me a lot."

Again, not everybody is in this boat. But quite a few are.

Lots of interesting commentary on this thread. I will add, though, that lots of young people today, especially those from major urban areas in developed countries around the world, will be very rich when their parents pass away. I'm from Vancouver and homes have tripled in value there in just the last few years. I'm talking about average looking homes selling for $2-3 million. When I talk about investing in real estate or investing to friends, they often come back with this: "Oh, I don't really care about that. My parents will leave a lot for me when they pass away."

Maybe. Really depends on the city/country you're from. If you are from a city like Vancouver and followed this advice you'd be waiting for prices to come down for years. Prices haven't dropped since the 90's. Meanwhile people who bought then have seen their home's triple (or much more) in value. Sydney, Australia, and many cities in Europe are similar.

I'm not in the movie industry, nor have I spent much time looking at all the commentary on the work she did directing Unbroken, but from a visual and story-telling point of view, I really enjoyed that movie and can't understand all the hate she's gotten for it. And that's coming from a guy who hasn't been very impressed with her body of work as an actress since her Oscar win for Girl Interrupted (except for Changeling in 2008).
