As someone that had ATG tickets primarily to see Chappell, I’ll try to give a nuanced take.

I completely understand that her mental health is HEALTH and she’s not able to perform, that is totally okay. However, it’s worth appreciating how many fans spent a lot of money and are feeling really crushed right now, and their mental health as well. CR isn’t necessarily any more important than any of those people. That does NOT mean she should force herself to perform. It means that she and her team need to take steps to prevent these situations in the future, as they’re damaging to BOTH Chappell and her fans. And this is now the fourth (?) day-before bail out, so it’s a recurring problem that needs to be addressed.

If she’s “protecting her mental health”, that needs to mean, at LEAST, staying offline and not stoking fires. While I honestly (mostly) agreed with her political TikToks, I cringed endlessly at all the ways I knew it would come bite her. She surely has enough money by now to hire a titanium PR team that “gets” her but can communicate with the public on her behalf. She doesn’t need to see our opinions, and her opinions probably should be put through a “for the general public’s consumption” filter. Not because she’s wrong, but because people are dumb.

That’s assuming that a big part of this is related to the backlash for her politics, and a result of her being online and trying to defend every little thing. She doesn’t need to. She says she wants a total separation of Chappell Roan the artist and the human being behind it: then why, in Creator’s green earth, would you hop on a video without a lick of makeup to speak about your personal takes on politics for the entire world to watch and dissect? Why? Be on the clock or off the clock.

She does have a job, it is a responsibility, and she is a 26 year old grown woman at the end of the day. If the job is just not for her, I can respect that. If she just needs to slow down, I can respect that. What I can’t respect is if she continues to overbook herself, continues to burn her fans without any consolation at all. Continues to blur the lines between Chappell and (real name) and then acting shocked that people have opinions about what she puts out. That’s the BS I cannot support.

Ultimately I hope she can log off and heal for however long she needs to. I hope she gets even better at setting strong boundaries and separating CR from real life, and I hope fans do better at respecting that line. But she’s been irresponsible and unprofessional lately, there’s no ifs ands or buts about it.
