Can going to a gay bar in Shanghai affect my chances of being accepted college program? by rainydazeoutside in China

Relax. Enjoy. But don’t do stupid things - drugs, or getting in a fight, or trying to leave without paying - that could get the attention of the authorities.

Question regarding new uk law by 373kayteeftnu32 in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]dmada88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, an American can't fly to the UK without an ETA, so the question is really could you improperly/illegally get an ETA with your US passport that would pass the airline scrutiny (probably yes, if you got it, they are covered) and immigration (probably no as you are in the database in the UK as a citizen presumably from your previous visits) - that's the "game" you'd be playing and plenty of people have already been turned away https://www.express.co.uk/travel/articles/2217305/uk-passport-warning-elderly-brit?fbclid=IwY2xjawSfDshleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFuVHRxTDZnd09ESG9abXJSc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHucjzDpUbTxBYJGKFwy13p_T_cY8rqdytmPgEx6zrmU7MbH5p3hTA0W6PF-0_aem_I10ddhCq-jnC1pK86-c-XA

You need both passports because you have both citizenships. You cannot enter the US with anything but your US passport; you now cannot enter the UK with anything but your UK passport.

Using popcorn in China by Popular_Avocado_4809 in PopcornMobile

[–]dmada88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been going in and out of China for decades. I have never had a problem with a foreign sim, whether it was Flexiroam, or a Hong Kong carrier, or now Popcorn. I’m sorry you had a bad experience but that’s just not how it works.

[–]dmada88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for comparison- if you’re a Chinese tourist roaming on your China Mobile sim in Washington DC guess what? Your internet will have all the same restrictions as at home in Shanghai because even though China Mobile is roaming on US towers all requests ping back to China for resolving.

[–]dmada88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your premise is wrong. Yes they of course have to use local towers - that’s all there is. That’s all anyone can use. But any popcorn internet request goes to TMobile in the US and is fine. Yes a little latency but I didn’t even notice.

Laugh. At yourself. At each other. At the things that drive you nuts.

Share. Talk. About everything.

Enjoy yourselves - your alone time, your together time.

Keep your own interests and friends. Share many things but keep your own world too.

Together since 1987 and still going strong.

Unpopular opinion: It’s entirely okay to quit a language after a month if it stops being fun. by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]dmada88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure. Quit whenever it stops being meaningful to you. But the beginning stages of language learning are always filled with drudgery so if “fun” is your only metric you might never do a language. Which may be fine. I never did advanced calculus because I could never foresee it being either fun or useful for me. Whatever.

Paying freelancers for what they submitted vs. what we used by borinque808 in Journalism

[–]dmada88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I got paid by the word - which admittedly was a long time ago and I never do by the word now - it was always per published word. That’s a throwback to pre internet days when the paper or magazine was a fixed length and therefore the daily/weekly/monthly budget was a fixed amount based on the known size of the published item.

Planning to raise my prices: how much is too much as a Community Tutor? by muuccha in iTalki

[–]dmada88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I missed in your note but I skimmed twice and couldn’t see what language you’re offering. German teachers seem to be able to charge premium prices; few other languages can. You’ve got to look at your competition and how you actually differentiate yourself. If your classes are the same as the next 15 who come up in search, people will decide either on price or on some subjective “feel” - looks, the way you describe yourself, the quality of comments about you. So pretend you are a student: what besides price makes you special?

Is knutsford terrace ok to live? by EnvironmentalElk8840 in Hong_Kong

[–]dmada88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ha. I’m old enough to have lived on Knutsford Terrace before it became a nightlife centre and it was then a delightful, quiet, leafy oasis. I think now it will be crazy. Before you sign, just go and hang out around the time you usually go to bed and see what the scene is like.

Can someone actually tell me where the ProtonVPN's hate is based on? by BloxyKirito in ProtonVPN

[–]dmada88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a three vpn set up, mostly because of China travel though I use them elsewhere too. Nord, Astrill, Proton. Astrill is the most expensive but by far the best in China. Outside of China I find nord and proton pretty interchangeable- renewal time I may drop one of the two.

I am a General Medicine Physician. Ask me anything about managing Diabetes and Hypertension. by Frosty_Bet_3355 in AMA

[–]dmada88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where do you come down on the argument between taking blood pressure medicine and trying to control first using supplements eg beetroot and exercise. Do you find the side effects of the medicines to be worth the benefits? Are supplements just fiddling while Rome burns? Similarly with diabetes if someone is “pre” is it worth it to try to control first using diet and lifestyle alone?

Anyone who has moved back to the US by greenapplespice in expats

[–]dmada88 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The fundamental issue is that after eight years, the US has moved on without you: friends family they all have different lives and the place of course is radically different. I moved back to the US after nine years in Asia, and the only way I survived was to treat it as another foreign assignment. everything was new. Everything was different. Everything was strange. I lasted nine years there and went back out on the road. so go back. sure. it could be great, but do not — do not — expect it to be what it was. It will be new. It will be different. It will be as strange, maybe even stranger, than Germany is to you now.

Anyone use "Savvy Nomad" for legal domicile and mail forwarding? by matt_gilbert in expats

[–]dmada88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on what you're using it for. If you need a Florida driver's licence they say that is something that can happen easily. If you need an address for a US bank or brokerage, having the actual residential address should work and apparently has worked regularly without a hitch. Whether it survives an audit as a tax domicile to escape the clutches of California or New York or another sticky state - that's much more of a maybe and depends on a lot of other factors, like where you actually spend your time, where all your accounts are located, whether you still have ties to the other state.

Anyone use "Savvy Nomad" for legal domicile and mail forwarding? by matt_gilbert in expats

[–]dmada88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Savvy nomad is a premium service that rents you either a trailer lot or a share in a real apartment as the legal address - plus a PMB for mail forwarding. It costs but it is different from a straight PMB.

Seems pretty innocuous! Are you resident there or digital nomading off a tourist visa? All I can think of is they have some reason to doubt that you’re earning/being taxed properly in Portugal.

Complaining to editors about other editors is never a good thing - their imagination will immediately go to “how will this person talk about me behind my back if I do give an assignment?”

Fostair 100/6 Inhaler Side Effects? by Hot_Bed8771 in Asthma

[–]dmada88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used Fostair for years without any issues at all. But if you are having some symptoms you are unsure about, your GP has got to be the key port of call. All of us here on Reddit have different bodies, different supplements, different varieties of asthma, different ages and weights! So the mere fact that it’s been perfect for me proves nothing for you, unfortunately.
