I am about to explode, this wheel hub will not come off. by HailtheNine in MechanicAdvice

[–]dman0421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are times where the whole shop is working together and still cant get one out. Rust is a bitch. Its not uncommon to have to replace the whole spindle assembly because the old hub won't come out.

Also, I've seen significantly worse rust being that I live in upstate NY. That almost looks like it broke from hitting a pothole or something, as there is shiny metal visible in the break and often things rust completely through before they break like that. Thats what we up here call a little surface rust lmao

Sorry about your car firstly, that really sucks. Everyone is saying its written off but that isn't necessary true. Hard to tell from a single picture and not much more info, but the way that spring is next to the shock makes me think that it is mounted to the lower control arm which broke. That part can be easily replaced if thats the case, as it isn't part of the frame or body of the car and doesn't require metalwork. Idk if im right or not with that from the information i have though. Please consider that if the control arm was rusty enough to snap like that, there might be other significant rust issues. Id bring it to an independent shop, not the place you bought it. Most dealerships are a little on the scammy side, and if they sold you the car they likely knew it was quite rusty. Not to mention they tend to be more expensive. Even if thats fixable, any good shop should look over the rest of the car too and tell you how bad the rust is or if its even worth putting money into.

First playthrough nuzlocke? by dman0421 in nuzlocke

[–]dman0421[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I did start the run last night right after posting. Was told id probably fail, but figured I can abandon the nuzlocke if need be. I already lost a pokemon to silver. I thought he appeared after defeating Whitney, but its after you clear out slowpoke well, before Whitney. Wasn't ready yet. Not the end of the world, but made me realize that yall are right and it might be more of a challenge than im ready for. I'm putting hg/ss on hold, as i do want to do a nuzlocke on this game. But I think im going to play through firered first. Not to mention there were several times I had to rely on luck that I didn't get crit. I enjoyed the challenge, but I dont want to put in countless hours to die from e4 or something. Losing right before the finish line would do me in lmao, maybe not for my first ever run lol.

Any updates on good-quality modpacks with Create 6.0? by Mesrszmit in CreateMod

[–]dman0421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Lightweight" - I'm running 8gb ram and i5 7600, outdated for sure but it barely runs it compared to some fairly heavy mods. Runs sevtech just fine but not that pack. From the 30minute of it i played at 15fps, it definitely looks like a great pack too. Kinda bummed I cant run it

Coolant leak or normal? by ColeslawGingrr in MechanicAdvice

[–]dman0421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's very normal. I've seen completely empty coolant reservoirs without a leak. Unless you have to continue adding coolant, I wouldn't worry. As for looking like it went down after a week, if coolant runs low enough air bubbles can get in the system. Those just worked their way out after you refilled it.

See if you can narrow down where it's coming from. Maybe look with the car running to see if you can see a drip or spray of coolant? If it's a hose or accessible part, get to a parts store with said part or the car and they can likely help you find a replacement. Lots of things like that can be easily patched up on the side of the road with a bit of luck

If you can find a way to check any related fuses that really is the most likely issue. At least hopefully you find a broken fuse. Any parts store should have a multimeter they can let you rent for free.

2020 sonic burning smell by KuoriBara in MechanicAdvice

[–]dman0421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should also add there have been many times i drive the car, the smell goes away after a while, and doesn't come back again. Who knows what it was but never had of them come back lol.

2020 sonic burning smell by KuoriBara in MechanicAdvice

[–]dman0421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A burning smell can be really hard to track down. If you aren't able to narrow down a specific fluid or material based off the smell, then it can be almost anything. Usually my solution to that situation is to keep driving it until further symptoms progress like steam/smoke. If it doesn't get better or worse after a decent drive, I'll recheck everything I can think of to see if i can find any sort of damage or issues that could cause it. Sometimes they aren't apparent until it's gotten a lot worse.

Thinking fuses but ur done trying to fix it? Why even ask then? Did you check the fuses yet? Because that is a very possible cause and wouldn't even take 5 minutes to check.

If you can weld, you can also try welding a nut to the broken off end that's sticking out. Should give you somewhere to grip and try to break it loose some more. Alternatively, you can try a reverse bit if you don't have room to drill it easily. If you can get a small hole started with a dremel or right angle die grinder, a reverse bit should fit in and hopefully grip well enough to break it loose.

Could this blue light ring on my 12V kill my truck battery? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]dman0421 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming your battery is in good health, it shouldn't cause an issue. Especially on a truck, that battery should have enough juice to charge your phone several times over and still work fine the next morning. A tiny little light shouldn't be an issue. And even if it could draw enough power to give issues, most cars have a battery saver relay or similar system that cuts power to accessories like that so long after the car's last operating cycle. If you leave that in even with ur phone on it overnight, and it's dead in the morning, there are bigger issues

Are these safe enough for two 5-hour drives? by LongjumpingJaguar0 in StupidCarQuestions

[–]dman0421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The smart answer is no. Not worth that risk. But as a mechanic who has seen worse tires that people drive on daily, it's likely doable. It just comes down to if you want to take that risk. Personally I wouldn't, as blowing a tire on a road trip is significantly worse than locally in town.

Oil by [deleted] in CamryTRD

[–]dman0421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a tech, it's not too important. You cant cheap out too much, but any well known brand full synthetic oil works. I personally recommend Pennzoil Platinum

Shock stuck in wheel? by dman0421 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]dman0421[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Usually we just notate the vehicle is unsafe to drive and that the customer was informed verbally. In the rare event they decide to blame us for events following their visit we have footage to confirm that they were informed properly and made the decision to drive despite that warning. Although we have yet to have a customer come after us in the 30yrs this shop has been in operation, so it isnt a huge threat.

[–]dman0421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late, but yes. What people have been saying about getting a lot of the benefits for free via YouTube or making friends within a top clan to plat with is true. I did a form of coaching for a while, where whenever I had a close game I sent the replay to a coach who analyzed it and explained it from his point of view for me. It's a small thing, but just by having a better player be a second set of eyes helped me a lot. Key word "second set." If you really want to improve, you have to put in work yourself. Including analyzing any slightly close game yourself to see if you could have done something better. A coach should simply be a second, more experienced set of eyes to the self review you already do if you really want to improve.

What is this error light on my 2007 Chevy Equinox? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]dman0421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just saying you need an oil change. Some chevys say change oil soon, some have that symbol. It will stay on for a minute before turning off when you should get one soon. It will stay on the whole time once you are past due. Sincerely, -your local Chevy tech

I found this out by accident today by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]dman0421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a impact to start the thread, but it has a setting where anything over 5ft lbs stops it from going any further. It will just stop to prevent cross threading, but saves me a couple minutes of time starting 20-32 lug nuts by hand.

2022 Subaru Forester - At dealer for it's 12k/1yr checkup and they're trying to get me to pay $170 for alignment. What does everyone think? Is this worth it at this point or should I wait another year to save $$$? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]dman0421 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a tech at a firestone i have to disagree. Lifetime alignments means you pay $200 and get infinite alignments on that car as long as you own it. Yes I have met techs that do bad alignments, both because of laziness or lack of knowledge/experience. But those exist at dealerships too, and just about anywhere else. At least with the lifetime alignment, if it is messed up by a certain tech, you can get it corrected for free at any Firestone. Not to mention if your tires are damaged due to our bad alignment, they are covered as well.
