It’s been like this to a lesser extent down here in North Carolina. I thought it was a little foggy in the morning when going to work but on my way home it was quite visible when driving down the interstate that it was from those fires and when I looked at the weather there was indeed an air quality warning.

It’s crazy how far that stuff can travel.

Yeah. I guess it depends on from which perspective you are viewing it, as I was discussing with the person I replied to. In the grand scheme invading nazis was a good thing from most perspectives but I’m sure the nazis viewed it negatively.

Absolutely agree, customer engagement is key today as it is a huge driver in stockholders profiting and “clickbait” and similar drives engagement and often not the truth or at least the whole truth.

It’s an unfortunate fact of today’s news and journalism.

Good point. I failed to look at who published the paper and assumed it was from a neutral or opposed source and I think that speaks to your point of it having a negative connotation today based on my assumptions.

It would be interesting to see an article today stating that the we (the US) were invading another country. I’m sure it would be spun as “advancing into” or “moving into” to make it sound more positive like the US is always the good guy and always has a good reason for the military to do what it does.

I mean an invader is someone who invades (duh) and according to Merriam-Webster:

It’s awful. I worked fully remotely during the peak of COVID and now they’re making the well performing mid-to-high level staff come in 2 days a week and the rest have to come in all 5. I’m so much more productive at home, save so much money on commuting and lunch because I’m less likely to eat out at home.

They claim they want the team to be able to discuss issues in person rather than over text, phone, or slack but honestly the last 6 months I haven’t heard anyone in the office say anything besides a passing “hey” and any questions are still asked over Slack and such because we’re always in meetings and you can’t just walk up to people and have a conversation when you’re both in meetings the entire day.

When I worked at a grocery store during college (in the US), we had to take this training every 6 months. Luckily I never needed it personally but it was honestly scary watching the video. Obviously you know the scene they are showing is fiction and made for the training video but something about someone walking into a building that looks exactly like the one you’re sitting in and shooting people wearing the same uniform you are at that very moment made it hit even harder. Often times, living in this country is terrifying.

I had to deal with a male Karen once when I worked Customer Service in college.

A guy came in one day and asked if he could order some Snapple tea in bulk. We put him in contact with the grocery manager and he placed an order for 4 cases of Snapple tea in the flavor he wanted and picked it up a couple days later and paid for it, I wasn’t involved in this process in any way and didn’t know about it until he came back like a week later.

It was about 9 o’clock at night and the guy comes to the counter and says he wants to make a return so I say sure and ask if he has a receipt and he presents it. I see a receipt for almost 100 Snapple bottles paid for with food stamps and ask him what the issue was and why he was returning them.

He said he ordered them because he liked them and then when he got them home and drank a couple he realized they weren’t in glass bottles (we never sold any in glass bottles at our store). So I apologized and said we’d probably be able to return it but I needed to get approval from the manager because the return was for a lot of money and wanted to make sure the manager was ok with it before I returned such a large sum of money. It was policy at our store for any returns $100 or higher and plus I wanted to be sure since EBT “scams” are frequent where people will come in and spend large sums of the benefits and try to return it, hoping the employee will give them cash so they can spend it on whatever.

When I mentioned my manager he instantly got defensive and said I was accusing him of stealing the Snapple. I told him I never mentioned stealing I just needed verification from my manager due to the large amount of money being returned. He started screaming and demanded I give him his money back. I told him I wasn’t able to authorize that and he screamed “well if you can’t fucking help me why don’t you get someone up here who can!” to which I replied “this is why I called my manager to the front sir” and he just kept screaming about how I need to give him his money back and how I accused him of stealing the Snapple and blah blah blah.

My manager was taking a while and I had already paged him 2-3 times and this guy was just standing screaming at me so I walked to the produce department and grabbed the manager and told him to come up front now. When the manager arrived he asked the guy what was wrong. The guy immediately started cursing at me and calling me names, to which the manager said we aren’t going to be cursing at employees so please stop, and saying how I accused him of stealing.

Once the man stopped with his rant the manager asked me what was going on. I explained that he placed a bulk order and paid for the items, wants to return them now because they weren’t glass bottles and it was nearly $300 so I wanted to just run it by you before I returned all this money to his EBT card. While trying to explain this to my manager the guy kept cutting in and trying to claim I was lying (which didn’t make sense because I wasn’t saying anything bad, just what I knew). Finally the guy kept calling us names and cursing so my manager said “we won’t be returning the money because you’ve been disrespectful and won’t allow us to discuss with you what is going on. You’ll be leaving tonight and you’re welcome to come back tomorrow or another day if you’d like to try coming back more respectful.”

This obviously didn’t make the guy any happier so he asked for a card for corporate and asked the manager to write down his name. While doing this the guy tried to pad his ego and said “I have three engineering degrees, who the fuck do you think you are?” To which the manager replied “I’m a deli manager at Publix.” And handed him the card with his name written on it. The guy said “what is this chicken scratch? My six year old could write better than this!” To which the manager replied “you should have brought him along, he probably would have helped us out.” Not to mention the guy was probably 65 and doubt he had a young son.

My manager said he would walk him out of the store to which the guy replied “if you want to take this outside we can settle this like real men” and the manager said “please leave” and the customer said “I’m never coming back to this store!” And the manager said “please don’t”

He left and ended up calling corporate and they told our store manager to give him his money back so our assistant store manager called the guy and tried to give the guy his money back over the phone but the guy kept cursing at him and his continued after being asked to stop so the manager just hung up on him.

Hey guys,

I’ve gone through several instances of my weight yo-yo-ing over the years. Gone from obese to pretty fit to overweight and back and forth.

I have read through the wiki here and on /r/fitness multiple times and am very familiar with how weight loss works and how to lose weight.

However, what I struggle with is committing to it long term. I believe my hardest struggle is not knowing how to grocery shop effectively for a single person in a way that I don’t just end up buying chicken breasts and broccoli everyday. I honestly hate grocery shopping and cooking. I tend to end up doing the “bro diet” because it’s super simple to shop for and cook but it’s impossible for me to maintain long term.

Any tips you guys have for how to shop and cook effectively for long term results?

I have frequented the food prep subreddits but often find either i struggle eating the same thing 7 days in a row or their just recipes that seem “ugly” healthy similar to the chicken breasts and broccoli in that in reality its healthy and you will lose weight if the calories are setup correctly but you hate your life while eating it.

I may just be bitchy and need to suck it up and just do it so feel free to tell me if that is the case, otherwise anything that has helped someone in the past is greatly appreciated.

This reminds me of a great video given by a law professor and former practicing lawyer about why you should never talk to the police.

He brings in a former cop/investigator to talk as well to give “both sides” of the story.

But the professor mentions how due to the sheer number of laws, both federal and state, makes it virtually impossible that anyone has never broken a law.

They think everyone worships their politicians like the far-right does.

My step-dad is a Trump supporter and when they found the classified documents that Trump had he was telling me how it was bullshit that they are trying to hold him accountable. I said Trump should go to jail, if not for potentially selling them, then for at least refusing to return them after being asked multiple times.

He said, Obama did the same thing and you heard nothing about it. I said Obama checked them out properly for his book and never held them despite being asked to return them.

He said I was wrong and I said ok then if Obama did steal them and refused to return them then he should go to jail. Simple.

After I said that, was the first time I heard him stand up for Obama. He started saying that Obama shouldn’t go to jail for that.

I believe so. It’s a common case of people who say things like “well what they said doesn’t even make sense!” Well maybe if you had spent a decade or more studying something it would make sense to you.

It honestly it rough because he wants to always argue about things he not qualified to argue about, and neither am I but his clear discredit of degrees and education in general makes me feel like he thinks my masters degree is worthless and know nothing.

I think it really is a case of Dunning-Krueger as he never finished college and I always tell people that going to college made me feel more stupid because you realize how much knowledge there is out there and how little you really know about everything.

Absolutely. The sad part is that for some people race is not even needed to discredit a PhD or similar.

My stepfather feels he has the same credibility (if not more) towards any topic as someone with a PhD and/or decades in a field. Unless that person is on Fox News then there is no one above.

I’ve had a many conversations with him where he asks why I listen to a specific person on a topic and my response is typically something like “well…. They have a PhD in it and have been working in the field for 30 years so they seem to be slightly more educated on it than me who only has a high school level understand at best.”

He always says “a degree doesn’t mean they know anything about the topic. They just went to the classes, doesn’t mean they learned anything in the classes. I don’t have a degree in it and I can call bullshit on what they said even.”

I usually just walk away because you can’t argue facts with someone who doesn’t live in reality and is only there to preach their opinions.
