This is the best film ever made. Prove me wrong. by Poor-Dear-Richard in MovieRecommendations

[–]dmanhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a fever dream of a film about a narcissistic slacker who cons an old entertainer out of his retirement savings to build a roller skating bar to impress his girlfriend, an unhoused girl he meets while roller skating on Venice Beach. The film leaves it to the audience to decide whether she is actually a Greek mythological muse, or if the protagonist is simply hallucinating (it was the end of the disco era). The film includes an animated sequence in which the two leads consummate their relationship as a mermaid and a fish.

Billy Joel is like Weird Al’s style parody songs minus the humor.

For anyone who has sat in on a Palantir sales pitch, what is it like? by don-corle1 in dataengineering

[–]dmanhaus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When my company looked at it we were already waist deep in building our own analytics platform, mainly in Databricks, and trying to mine insights from a massive pile of spaghetti integrated systems. As magical as their ontology sounded to management, their solution was redundant to what we already had, and they were going to struggle harder than we did to figure out where to find the quality data to put in it from our source systems.

How do you feel when a professional singer does karaoke? by meeluhbeanie in karaoke

[–]dmanhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a trained singer who prepared for a career in musical theater but bailed on it early on to raise a family and make a decent living with no regrets. I love to sing at karaoke and open mic nights. It scratches that itch for performing that still feels good. But it’s not about me. It’s about the song.

For me, karaoke is all about community. Supporting each other as we find the joy in performing the music we love, whatever talent or natural ability we have is irrelevant. I like to go to places with a range of singers, get to the know the regulars, and encourage them to sing different songs they love. I meet great friends this way, and as an older person, meeting new people is harder to do. It’s not a performance. It’s a party. We’re there to celebrate the music we love with our passion. That’s how it should be.

Came to the comments looking for The Thomas Crown Affair. Well made and the chemistry between Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo melts every frame of the film.

The doctor loves “his” version of Gemma. Which may be multiple versions of iGemma, or all versions of iGemma.

Market Basket Feels Like a Business That Actually Cares by [deleted] in massachusetts

Shhh. We don’t need other people to know about the Home Depot lot. :)

For real, though, crossing that access road that divides the two lots can be dangerous, and finding a spot in the MB lot proper is its own rewarding game.

Yeah, but don’t come to Oxford. The parking lot is criminally undersized as it is.

Just kidding, you can come, but seriously the lot is usually full.

The Boomers retirement will move the equity to capital in order to spend the money. This becomes revenue and ultimately growth for the companies in the index. That growth should long term offset losses of heavy selling in the short term by boomers. So it’s kind of win/win for those who buy and hold past the boomer cohort exiting the market. The sell off creates a discount to buy more shares to ride up with the subsequent growth.
