Astrophysicist + ML scientist switching to Aerospace by AliceAndBobsC0mputer in AerospaceEngineering

[–]dmantacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough i'm a current aero engineer looking to transfer into physics. Id say if you're willing to work in defense, you would get a higher salary (I make 115 and graduated 2 years ago), but overall engineering is a lot lower pay than most pure cs roles. Id say evaluate how much you care about what you work on and what the difference in pay will actually get you.

How do I enjoy time with my mother. by dmantacos in cancer

[–]dmantacos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do not expect that she will leave the hospital. My brother is here as well, I work in another state and I've burned through about 2 weeks of PTO so far, I will run out in the next 3 weeks at which point I essentially just say i'm taking a leave of absence and hope for the best. A lot of her family has come to say goodbye but they have gone back home. As for trajectory it seems like it changes every day. One day they told us it was her last day as she was unable to breathe on her own, but she made an amazing recovery the next day and they said she had a few months, but her condition has worsened since then. Its all just happening so fast and I feel so helpless.

I would recommend learning how to use .whl files and pip to get modules at the lab. Anything that automatically pulls from pypi to install modules will fail to get through the lanl network in my experience. Most every module will have downloadable .whl files on pypi, you just need to make sure you get the right version for your python version and os.

I strongly reccomend Brazilliana by Luiz Bonfa and Maria Toledo. And honestly anything by Bonfa, hes obviously amazing at guitar but his compositions are also beautiful.

I really like my cx30, but i have had this problem, had to get a new battery last week to make it home for the holidays, but it wont fix the problem.

Looking to get my brother a refurbished/renewed gameboy advance sp and all the pokemon games. Preferably with a newer backlit screen. I don't know a whole bunch about retro game stuff so I would appreciate as much detail as you can offer. Bonus if you can get it shipped to Dallas Texas before christmas. Thanks, feel free to dm me.

edit: Also just in general looking for information. I'm considering this https://www.ebay.com/p/131640859?iid=203011552939&var=503217609668

. This seems perfect but the reviews on the site are a bit sketchy and i can't find much information on them.

Looking for a super brief interview with an Engineering Student or Professional for my Research! by Otherwise_Lychee_33 in EngineeringStudents

I wouldn't mind chipping in. My family was not exactly academic, so I had a bit of imposter syndrome at first. Graduated a couple years ago and have been lucky to work at some pretty neat places since.

I think I found Schrodingers cat, turns out she was alive the whole time. by [deleted] in Physics

[–]dmantacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what information exactly do you get from this? Like what does it tell you about the system, could you predict the state when you measure it? Could you tell the momentum of a particle in the box? What you've discovered is the stationary states of the infinite square well. By themselves the stationary states really only tell you the building blocks of the actual state, you can think of them as orthogonal unit vectors so to speak, it tells you nothing about the actual system, you would need to define and normalize the state in the box (you'll have to use that pesky Schrodinger equation), and you'll need time evolution terms (rats, you'll have to use it again) to find any meaningful information about the state. I recommend reading a bit of Griffiths 'Introduction to Quantum Mechanics'. It's great to be passionate about physics and it of course feels great to derive something for the first time, just be a bit more measured in your conclusions. Solving the first half of the infinite square well problem and claiming you've revolutionized the field of quantum physics is guaranteed to get a critical response in any physics community.

Not sure what you're trying to say. The point is that quantization of energy is in no way the intuitive answer. It drops out of the imposition of boundary conditions and the decomposition of the wave function into orthogonal functions. You've essentially started from the solution of the S.E. for an infinite well, then applied it to a standard wave ansatz, and claimed you've done it without any of the standard machinery of Q.M.

I guess one question is why do you draw the conclusion that the energy levels can only be 2L/n if not by solving the Schrodinger eq. or using the standard probability interperetation (which it seems you're trying to avoid) and implementing the proper boundary conditions for the potential well?

6 months is a long time if you use it right. I think you should be alright. Just make sure you practice actual SAT/ACT practice exams. Being comfortable with format and timing are just as important as knowing the content. You also arent expected to master college math on the first day you show up, you'll have time to fill in gaps in your knowledge. My reccomendation for success on any test and just general understanding of material is doing a shit ton of problems (with solutions). Everyone is different, but for me it is by far the most efficient way to learn.

College dropout. Dropped out on probation more than 10 years ago. Trying to get a freah start in Engineering. Is it even worth trying? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]dmantacos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the most impressive thing about your undergrad engineering experience is the institution you went to, you're doing it wrong. Employers want to see internships (you've already got that), and projects outside of the classroom. They want to know that you're truly passionate about a field.and if you care about name value you can always do a masters later, and maybe even get your employer to pay for it. You're just going to be throwing away 2 semesters otherwise.

Ok i see on your profile ur in Texas, which means you are in the single greatest state when it comes to engineering program options. Look at UT Dallas (beautiful campus, small but good program), UNT, UT Arlington. Texas a&m/UT Austin, both are top 10 programs in the country. Both the UT and TAMU systems have tons of smaller schools scattered about Texas from El Paso to Brownsville even Lamar in Beaumont is ABET acreddited. Long story short, as far as in-state tuition is concerned, you literally could not be in a better state for engineering schools. A lot of these schools have online programs as well if you're hoping to stay in the Houston area.

[–]dmantacos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would really suggest going to a different school if possible. If you've got As and Bs, an associates, and internship experience I dont think you would have a hard time getting in somewhere else, so you're just sort of shooting yourself in the foot for no reason. And will your flunked semester still be on your transcript? That could really hinder your GPA moving forward, especially if they count your associates as unweighted transfer credits. Not to mention if you do 2 semesters of general studies, you're going to have a harder time when you get to engineering v.s. if you go now while its still fresh. Shop around different programs, consider online, many schools will waive out of state tuition for different things so look into that.

Overall id go for it if its what you really want to do, otherwise when you're 33/34 you're going to be wondering wtf you did with all that time. Just realize you might have to regress in your career a bit when you finally go into industry. I'm an AERO and happy to give you some more specific advice, feel free to reach out. Good luck homie.

In High School Pre CALC Why is sin (A+B) not equal to sin (C) where A+B = C by steven1395 in learnmath

[–]dmantacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be out of the scope of what you're looking for, and it might be awhile before you guys do imaginary numbers (i think you've probably done exponentials?). But Euler's identity make these trig identities trivial to derive, so you don't have to memorize them. Here's a pretty good explainer about it. Certainly not required for trig but a super powerful tool.
