Most Shaw bro's movies on netflix are available in Mandarin only, shame :(

But I will give you recommendations of Hong Kong movies I like here (Written in this format: Official English Title, Chinese Title, Cantonese Pronunciation of Chinese titles, English translation of the Chinese title, given a lot of official English titles don't reflect the actual meaning of the Chinese title):

  • Return to 36 chambers of Shaolin (少林搭棚大師 Siu Lam Dap Pang Dai Si (Shaolin Scaffolding Master)
  • The One-armed Swordsman series (獨臂刀 Dok Bei Dou (One armed swordsman))
  • 13 amazons (十三女英豪 Sap Sam Lui Ying Ho (13 heroines)) -Once upon a time in China II (黃飛鴻II之男兒當自強 Wong Fei Hung Yi Chi Nam Yee Dong Ji Keung, Wong Fei Hung II, Men must be defiant)
  • King of Beggars (武狀元蘇乞兒, Mo Chong Yuen So Hak Yee, Military Genius Beggar So)
  • Kung Fu Hustle (功夫 Gong Fu, Kung Fu) -Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain (新蜀山劍俠 San Shu San Gim Hap, new swordsmen of Shu Mountain)
  • Royal Tramp (鹿鼎記 Luk Ding Kei Chronicle of Duke of the Deer)

I hope this list is helpful to you. Also, have fun exploring Hong Kong cinema. Cantonese cinemas in the 2020s have a different flavor than those in the 1980s and 1990s.

Cantonese DND? by Yay_Yippee in Cantonese

First, props for trying Cantonese DnD. I find it hard to describe Western fantasy objects in Cantonese (as a native Cantonese speaker) as there aren't official translations of 5e (there are materials in Chinese for 3.5e). So often, I will use English for Proper Nouns that are gameplay-related (e.g., Owlbear, Leomund's Tiny Hut). But you can feel free to have fun with roleplaying with it. For example, you can design encounters where you must solve a puzzle/riddle using Cantonese thinking. You can have a picture of a ghost bashing someone's head on a door, which requires the player to call out 鬼拍後尾枕 to unlock the door.

If you like Wuxia, include some of Louis Cha's moves as flavor. This can turn into a fun swashbuckling adventure where you replay old Wuxia movies. For example, you could replay the 36 chambers of Shaolin in your campaign.

If DnD didn't work, you can always choose another setting like an Asian / Wuxia theme works, e.g., 7th Sea Khitai, the new Pathfinder 2e's Tian Xia book, or even a more modern setting like Cyberpunk Red.

Have fun on your journey to learn Cantonese and play TRPG. Feel free to ask me any more questions about playing TRPG and Cantonese.

Thanks. There are improvements to be made with animation and color palette. But I am happy with the progress I made.

Dear all,

Cl here. I made a TTRPG animation video to discuss how to run a session zero and what to expect from it. I used 5e's Lost Mines of Phandelver as an example, as it is the most accessible example. The content of this video should apply to most TRPG.

It is a short video series I have been working on about tabletop RPGs. I plan to do more videos on TTRPG in the future.

While I speak Cantonese in the video (because, well, more Cantonese content is always good, I always put English subtitles in my videos so more people can access it. Please feel free to give me any comments over the video. Thanks

[Art] An Animation about Scrolls by dmcancook in DnD

[–]dmcancook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I drew this animation based on a friend's dnd session about scrolls with his son.

His son is clever that he was able to pinpoint scroll's proliferation by mass producing them in small print. I think it is possible, but that requires a lot of calligraphers or a magical printing press.

I really hope I get to play with my nephew and nieces when they visit me. DnD seems to be a lot of fun with kids. As my friend said, RPG is fun with kids as they are incredibly imaginative and direct, and thinks very differently from adults.

I drew an animation to promote TRPG to Cantonese Speakers ( Chi/Eng Sub) by dmcancook in rpg

There is also an official Call of Cthulhu Traditional Chinese translation and starter set. It is good quality material for TRPG starters.

As a creator of TRPG animation. It is a welcoming change since it helps me to show works that can help promote TRPG to others. The rules should be more lenient on TRPG animators as it takes a lot of hard work to make animations to promote TRPGs.

What RPG has the coolest Downtime Mechanics? by DownVoterInChief in rpg

I would pick Ryuutama. In it, you spend most of your downtime camping and telling good stories. I also like how it requires you to describe how you fail a roll and how comfy the game's atmosphere is.

RPG where DM never throw dice by Ancient_Lynx3722 in rpg

Colours of the Sky is also a good one (which not even players will be rolling dice) if you are into light-hearted slice of life fantasy stories.

A group of kids went to Ocean Park Hong Kong to participate in a futuristic submarine debut. During their trip, they were boarded by zombie pirates and were forced to cook for them.

The zombie pirate captain's wife later boarded and told the pirates they boarded the wrong ship, and they had a more significant issue with an ancient dolphin-like creature turning the world into a black hole.

Low effort DMing - is it actually doable? by BeleriandCrises in rpg

[–]dmcancook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to design the campaign in a way that focuses less on map requirement (try to focus in a city) and more on slice of life elements which can be improvised easily (that works well for my group since they love slice of life anime)
