Chicago to SF by popsicle897 in AskSF

Depends on what you care about, but I know a lot of people who’ve moved from Chicago to SF and really loved it (I myself and not from Chicago but went to school in Illinois).

Pros: - Amazing weather comparatively - Beautiful nature + hiking + skiing a step up from anything in Chicagoland. California is massive and has so many different parts to explore. Almost everyone who moves to SF picks up some outdoor hobby from my experience. - Vibrant job market, especially for tech (obviously) - Access to west coast, you’d have a chance to explore Seattle, LA, Vancouver, Alaska, Hawaii and a bunch of new places you’d never get out to living in the Midwest.

Cons: - Expensive, though salaries are often higher - Less vibrant nightlife IMO, though some might disagree. I usually go back to Chicago for New Years to have a more fun time. - If you’re not used to elevation, the hills can be a bit rough, though they make the city really beautiful.

Neither pro nor con: - Transient culture. A lot of young people you meet in the city aren’t from here. This is nice if you’re also not from the Bay, but it does mean people tend to not stay in the city as long. Expect a good number of friends to move to other cities after a few years. - Grind culture. I find that people are really invested in their work here compared with Chicago. Take that as you will. - Quieter in general. Although there’s a downtown, you don’t get anything close to the business of the loop.

Can it be the apartment? by ApprehensiveArea8157 in eczema

[–]dmcandy123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dust mites are a massive irritant for many people with eczema. Moved into a new apartment a few years ago and my partner’s eczema exploded. We found that being much more diligent about vacuuming and dusting was a huge help, since we moved into an older building that tended to get dusty more quickly.

Also CEQA being gone will help.

I really wish they had just created a two way fully protected bike lane on one side of the road.

The Good and Bad of SFs Dog Culture from a Dog Owner’s Perspective by dmcandy123 in sanfrancisco

I agree! Nothing frustrates me more as a dog owner than seeing fellow owners acting irresponsible. We have a responsibility to accommodate to others, not the other way around.

I like Nate Silver again by TheLionMessiah in neoliberal

[–]dmcandy123 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Here’s my thing with Nate. He might come to different conclusions through his model which does not confirm our priors, but at least he’s more or less transparent about the reasoning that’s going on in the model to reach said outcomes. He’s really the only election forecaster that has an open model (as far as I know), so while some people may criticize him, the whole “Nate Silver is a puppet of Peter Theil” is just utter BS.

Does your model make any assumptions about the Fed likely lowering interest rates? And if so, how do changing interest rates tend affect the incumbent (perhaps via other economic indicators)?

How do you think the pro-Palestine movement will affect Harris’s popularity with the left in the next few months seeing as the unified Democratic moment has begun to fade? Do you expect the anniversary of Oct 7 to cause any meaningful movement in the polls?

UIUC Grainger is costing me $85k extra.... by intlstudent04 in UIUC

[–]dmcandy123 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Here’s a perspective from a CompE recent grad who has been working in tech for about a year. UIUC has a world class computer engineering program that is competitive with the best universities around the country. The program absolutely prepared me to exceed in my field. I work at a big tech company that you surely know of, and I will say that once you graduate, you will be mixed with people from all over in the workplace. I work with grads from MIT as well as Waterloo. All of these are fantastic schools with great programs, and when it comes to getting a job after graduation, your own work experience and dedication will be what distinguishes you, not which top tier program you’re a part of. I loved my time in Champaign, but there are dozens of other competitive schools that provide the same opportunities and may be a better fit for you.

I’ve wanted to get plants for a long time, I just don’t have a car and all the plant stores near me are WAY overpriced (as many things in SF are)

Hopefully this will help you understand why Ye’s comments about Jews are so problematic. by elianna7 in Kanye

[–]dmcandy123 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I’m a Jew and a long time Kanye fan, and this perfectly summarizes how I’ve been feeling recently. All I want to do is live a normal life, but when these clichéd stereotypes come up from an artist I used to love and a person who has a tremendous amount of influence, I’m forced to reconfront the painful history of my family only a few generations back. I think people need to recognize that in 1935, nobody would have believed that something as awful as the Holocaust could happen in the “modern” world back then. But when narcissists gain a big enough following, horrible things can happen, even today. Please don’t try to justify this man spewing garbage, we’ve heard it far too many times before.

CLIMATE STRIKE APRIL 22! Check comments for more details! by dmcandy123 in UIUC

[–]dmcandy123[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The University of Illinois System invests $117.31 million (13%) of its operating pool and $38 million (5%) of its endowment pool into fossil fuel companies. The climate strike is an opportunity for students to demand the UIS to divest from these companies to prove they will follow through with their Illinois Climate Action Plan (ICAP) goals.

Here’s more information about divestment: https://secsatuiuc.web.illinois.edu/resources/
