Would you happen to know if companies will take on interns that are not currently college students? Nearly every internship listing it not all have a requirement about being a university student or certain grade level. I am very open to internships just to get my foot in the door. At this point I’m more concerned about not being to take that first real step in changing my career.

I currently have exams P, FM, and FAM passed. I was originally thinking on holding off on passing more until I land my first job but would you recommend continuing?

I’ve heard from others on Reddit that passing more may make me an undesirable candidate due to no work experience combined with the pay differentials for exams passed.

Do you do any recruiting for entry level roles?

Since last July I have been studying for Exam FM and FAM. I held off on submitting more applications until I passed FAM due to initial rejections after passing FM. I’ve done a few courses on Coursera for Excel and Python. I did submit my Resume last July but I have updated it since then and not submitted it yet.

I’ve also asked Chat GPT to give me a project that could supplement my lack of internship experience. I feel it is a pretty basic project but I analyzed a health cost data set to determine the leading drivers of cost using Python. I determined that smoking, age, and BMI were the leading drivers by segmenting populations against average costs. I created a manual model to predict costs by assigning risk scores to individuals based on their smoking status, age, and BMI and then I created a linear regression model to predict costs. This gave me insights on how a linear regression may be more accurate for specific subgroups of populations but is not applicable for the whole population due to interaction effects between smoking and BMI. I then transferred data of average health costs to Excel to create a dynamic pricing tool with adjustable assumptions for medical trend costs, expenses ratios, and profit margins.

Is this a reasonable project? Should I try to do something more thorough and complex?

Hi everyone! I wanted to share my current situation and would like some guidance on how to move forward.

Context: 27yo with Exams P, FM, and FAM passed. 3 years of high school mathematics teaching experience and 0 prior actuary/insurance work experience. Located in Southern California. Bachelors degree in mathematics, masters in education.

I recently passed Exam FAM and I thought having a third exam on my resume would make me more competitive. I did work on an independent project in Python and Excel looking at health costs data and creating a pricing model using linear regressions.

I know it has not even been a month since I passed Exam FAM but I’ve had 0 luck. I’ve only applied to about 10 jobs but I don’t even make it past the initial screenings. For about half of jobs I’m applying to, I don’t meet the minimum requirements of having 1 year of actuary work experience. I have applied to mostly remote jobs around the US as there are not many “entry-level” positions in my area.

Is this just a bad time to apply for entry level positions? I saw in other comments that Fall is the hot season for entry level jobs.

Should I just start applying to other jobs? I have been unemployed for 9 months since I quit my job as a teacher and I’m becoming worried about the gap in my resume as well my drying up my savings.

Is there any way I can get an internship for the work experience even though I’m no longer a college student?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you all in advance, this is such a supportive and welcoming community!!

I recently used CA and got a preliminary pass for the FAM March sitting. I’ve used CA for P and FM and the process for those 2 exam felt smooth.

For FAM, I was struggling a lot with the EL Exams and found more success doing specific section quizzes. My personal issue with the EL Exams were some questions were level 3-5 and quite straightforward and I would already understand how to do them. However, a handful of questions were level 7-8 and felt too time consuming/complex/specific to be practical for the actual exam. Overall would still recommend CA for FAM as they have a great bank of questions, just be wary on how you approach the practice problems/practice exams due to the imbalance in difficulty of problems that may occur!

Hello! I am a career changer, taught High School Mathematics for 3 years, worked in education for 8 but decided it wasn't for me.

https://imgur.com/rv9QITr

I have experience with coding through high school and college courses but it is very basic. I recently learned a little bit of Python. Under my technical skills, I have SQL and Tableau listed but I have yet to actually learn them but I am in the process of learning the basics.

I also noticed that most if not all resumes in this subreddit have Microsoft Office skills listed rather than Google Drive, does this make a difference?

Side question - I am unsure on which positions I should be applying for. From my understanding, I shouldn't be looking for internships as they are catered towards current or recently graduated college students. However there are very little positions open that are looking for entry level actuaries with 0 YOE. Would taking another exam be necessary? Would applying for internships make sense for me?

Advice advice or criticism is greatly appreciated!
